Principals Corner

by Isabel Gavin and Heidy Cortez

I hope that all of our families will be able to enjoy the upcoming spring break and students will come back ready to tackle the end of the school year that will speed by after spring break! Here are a few updates and reminders as we head into spring break. We have recently begun increasing our focus on academic excellence by having students failing one or more classes attend a study period instead of assemblies. This focus has reduced the number of students with at least one F by almost 20% between the two groups we have instituted in this plan. We will be having an activity night on Friday, April 14th. Students attending this activity night must pass all their classes to attend!

We will also be getting back to diligently enforcing our cell phone policy when we return from spring break. Our current policy allows students to use their phones before and after school and during lunch. We will be updating this policy when we return from spring break to include lunch as a time when students will not be able to use their phones. This would mean that students can only have their phones before and after school. We hope this change will encourage students to interact more personally with their peers and limit distractions in the hallway.

Chelan Middle School Rules

Discipline Philosophy

Hello, Chelan middle school! Today, Israel Acevedo and Hunter Radcliffe are here to tell you about Chelan Middle Schools' discipline philosophy.

You can also find the information in the student handbook for the April newsletter. Be respectful to your teachers, peers, and equipment during school because they teach you to be better. Be accountable for your actions, words, and damages. Be safe when you are during a school sport or when you're outside and in the hallways. There are four consequences if you are not respectful, secure, and accountable. The first consequence can be student conferences, parent conferences, lunch detention, apology letter, and reflection essay. The level two consequence can be student parent-teacher conferences, mediation, counseling referral, and in-school suspension. The level three consequences include out-of-school suspension, behavior plan, and re-engagement plan. The last level of discipline can be long-term suspension, emergency expulsion, and expulsion. The goal of the Chelan middle school is to teach kids, not to discipline them.

We’re here with Liz Martinez in the front office; she helps kids and adults get into the school. We're interviewing her for the April Newsletter. We interviewed Liz on Thursday, March 23rd, and here is what she said.

When we asked Liz about daily struggles, she responded, “ One struggle I have often is staying organized.”

We asked Liz, what is your favorite part of your job? Her response was, “ My favorite part of my job is I get to work with a lot of cool people on the adult side, and I get to meet a lot of cool kids. Kids that are doing a lot of different things, they are doing sports and their first job, running for clubs, ASB.”

Liz uses many software tools, but these are the ones she uses the most: "The two big ones I use almost every day all day are Skyward, our database. That's how I know where you guys are at; the second one I use all the time is my email because that's how I communicate with staff, students, and parents.”

How long has Liz been working at this school? “I have been here for five years but have been with the district for 19.”

Hi, This is Kaden Wolff and Larissa Duran
In this article, we will tell you what you can do to help your kids learn at home. Follow our newsletter to get great ideas for projects, activities, and games to help your child learn outside school.

As I'm sure you know, reading is an essential life skill. Your kid can divide/multiply numbers he sees on a street sign, route marker, license plates, and anything that you see on the road that has a number you can divide or multiply it. Today we will help your kid advance their reading skills; the activity we will be doing is possible to do while traveling.
