Summer Rising Information Session
Summer is just around the corner! This year MS 50's Summer Rising site is at IS 71 (Juan Morel Campos Campus) with afternoon programming from El Puente Beacon. Beacon will be hosting an information session this Thursday, April 20 at 6:00PM, with an opportunity to ask questions and discuss procedures for how to register your student. Join at the Zoom link below.
Classroom Spotlight: Math
6th Grade Math: Unit Rates and Percentages
In this unit, students learn to understand and use the terms “unit rate,” “speed,” “pace,” “percent,” and “percentage,” and recognize that equivalent ratios have equal unit rates. They represent percentages with tables, tape diagrams, and double number line diagrams, and as expressions. They use these terms and representations in reasoning about situations involving unit price, constant speed, and measurement conversion.
7th Grade Math: Probability and Sampling
In this unit, students design and use simulations to estimate probabilities of outcomes of chance experiments and understand the probability of an outcome as its long-run relative frequency. They represent sample spaces in tables and tree diagrams and as lists. They calculate the number of outcomes in a given sample space to find the probability of a given event. They consider the strengths and weaknesses of different methods for obtaining a representative sample from a given population. They generate samples from a given population, e.g., by drawing numbered papers from a bag and recording the numbers, and examine the distributions of the samples, comparing these to the distribution of the population.
8th Grade Algebra: Quadratic Equations
In this unit, students will generate a quadratic function as a product of two linear equations where they will compare quadratic, linear, and exponential functions. Students will write quadratic equations and inequalities using real world situations and graph them in order to find key features. Using what we know about families of graphs, students will perform transformations on the quadratic functions.
