News from the Principal 🤩 News from the Principal 🤩

Neabsco Families,

Thank you for partnering with us to make this a strong start to the school year. As we continue to build positive routines, I want to take a moment to remind families of a few important ways you can support your child’s success at school:

Behavior and Expectations

Please take some time to talk with your student about appropriate behavior in all areas of the school day, especially in the cafeteria and on the bus. These are important times for students to practice respect, responsibility, and kindness. Your reinforcement at home makes a big difference in helping us maintain a safe and positive learning environment for everyone.

Families, please make sure you are aware of the PWCS Code of Behavior: https://codeofbehavior.pwcs.edu/. This gives information to families about the behavior that is expected from the students and what interventions and supports are used if a student needs additional support while a student in PWCS.

Homework and Communication

Homework is an opportunity for students to practice important skills and develop responsibility. Teachers will be sharing homework expectations and weekly classroom updates through their grade-level newsletters. We ask that families check these newsletters, ask students if they are completing technology program minutes, class assignments, and continue to have regular conversations with them about how school is going. Focus on students having a growth mindset and working through challenges that they may face.

Upcoming Events

  • Advisory Council Meeting – This Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. We will review last year’s data, share this year’s continued improvement goals, and discuss upcoming opportunities for families to partner with us in our work.
  • Back-to-School Night – Coming soon! Thursday, September 26. We are excited to welcome all families to learn more about your child’s classroom procedures and learning. During this evening, we will also host our Title I Annual Meeting to share information about how you can support strong academic practices at home.

We look forward to seeing you at these upcoming events and continuing to work together to support every Neabsco STAR. Thank you for the many ways you partner with us, your involvement makes all the difference!

🐶 Pooches in the Pool 🐶

What happens when you add 4 pools + 300 dogs? You get a big, hairy, splashy party that Calgary, Canada calls Dog Day. The town pools need cleaned at the end of summer, so why not let dogs splash around in there first? People pay to let their doggies paddle, and that money helps other rescued animals. And grown-ups and kids can swim with the hounds, too, if you don’t care whether the water is clean…

Wee ones: What numbers would you say to count your doggie’s 4 paws?

Little kids: If you and your dog both swim, how many legs do you put in the pool together? Bonus: If they hold the party on a Sunday, and it takes 3 days from then to clean up the mess, on what day are the pools clean again?

Big kids: If a family pays $24 total to bring their 6 dogs into the pool, and each dog costs $3, how much extra did the people pay to swim themselves? Bonus: If the 300 dogs split up evenly among the 4 pools, how many pooches are in each pool?

The sky’s the limit: If there are 50 legs in the pool and there are twice as many dogs as people, how many swimmers of each type are in the pool?

Answers:
Wee ones: 1, 2, 3, 4.

Little kids: 6 legs. Bonus: On Wednesday.

Big kids: Another $6, because the dogs cost $18. Bonus: 75 dogs per pool.

The sky’s the limit: 10 dogs and 5 people. The dogs and people fall into “sets ” of 2 dogs plus a person, who together have 10 legs. So if there are 50 legs total, there are 5 of these “sets,” giving us 5 x 2 = 10 dogs, and 5 people.

Celebrating Your Child's Birthday Celebrating Your Child's Birthday

At Neabsco, we are doing our part to promote school health and wellness and following the PWCS Regulation 275-1 Wellness Plan. We all know birthdays are important to children. At school, children celebrating a birthday will be gifted a birthday pencil.

Sending a food treat to the classroom to celebrate can exclude children who have life-threatening food allergies and other dietary restrictions, who can be triggered to a medical emergency.

We are trying to make Neabsco a healthy and safe place for all of our Stars, so instead of sending in food treats, we have some additional ideas on how you can recognize your student on their birthday.

An alternative to food treats for your child’s birthday celebration at school:

· Pencils, erasers, fun stickers, temporary tattoos, stencils, stampers

· Small puzzles, Bubbles, fun superhero rings, rubber bracelets

· Donate a book in your child’s name to the classroom or school library

· Donate a game in your child’s name to the classroom

Please do not send balloons, flowers, or other celebratory bouquets to school for safety reasons.

Finally, please note, teachers can pass out birthday party invitations only if the entire class is invited. Parents are still welcome to send in small treats, although we would like to discourage items like donuts, oversized cupcakes, soda, and juice/juice boxes. Foods such as mini-cupcakes, cookies, sliced fruit or vegetables, etc., will be shared at lunch time. Food items must be store bought with a food label on them to avoid any allergic reactions.

We are looking forward to a happy and healthy school year. We appreciate all that our parents do to support their children in making healthy food and snack choices at home and at school.

Growing Readers Growing Readers

Here at Neabsco, our families are valued partners in their scholar's education! Communication between you and your scholar's teacher is critical to help support your Star Scholars. Sharing with the teacher your scholar's strengths and interests, as well as addressing any concerns or questions you may have will help bridge that relationship to ensure scholar success.

Here are three important ways to bolster your child’s enthusiasm for school this year from the Parent Institute and Title 1:

  • Praise your child’s effort, progress, and success.
  • Help your child see how school lessons apply to life outside of the classroom.
  • Brainstorm with your child a goal for improving school this year

We have a few events coming up that will help you promote partnerships and support your scholars’ success.

  • Annual meeting and Back-to-School Night on Thursday, September 25, 2025, at 5:30.
  • PWCS Title 1 Family Camp will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at Hampton Middle School from 8:30 to 12:30.

We hope to see everyone at these events. We want to thank you for your enthusiasm to support literacy and learning.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Carolyn Matthews Matthecj@pwcs.edu , Jessica Monahan Monahanj@pwcs.edu or Jessica Hesser Hesserj@pwcs.edu.

Supporting Students & Celebrating Emotional Growth

Hello Families,

Started this week during Counseling Encore, students have met—or will soon meet—with their School Counselors to learn how they support emotional wellness and help students navigate everyday challenges. As part of their visit, students are reviewing the Zones of Regulation—a tool that helps them identify their feelings using four color-coded zones and discover strategies to manage emotions in healthy ways. It's all about learning how to feel better, focus better, and support one another!

✨ September Attendance Challenge Reminder! From Monday, September 8 through Friday, October 3, students who attend school every day—or miss no more than one day—will be celebrated. Consistent attendance helps build strong habits and a thriving learning environment.
