Geography
Hello Global Citizens! Welcome to World Geography class 🙂
Last Week students took their first map quiz, identifying the 7 continents and 5 oceans. They also set their binder up for class. This binder will live in the classroom. Midweek we will launch into our unit 1 by learning our map vocabulary.
This Week students will take a brief formative, matching the terms to each vocabulary definition. After we will launch into our map skills exercises. Students will learn the FIVE parts of a map and how to use them on a map. By the end of the week students will receive resources to review for their first summative, called Map skills test.
Science
Hi Scientists!
Last week students practiced classroom procedures and wrote a letter to their science teacher reflecting on their experiences with science. This week, after taking the Nature of Science pre-test, students will begin learning about the scientific practices and the scientific method, with a focus on observations and what it means to be a scientist. Later in the week we will learn about independent variables, dependent variables, and controls. Students will participate in an engaging activity involving mystery envelopes. In this activity, students will use their observation skills to identify the contents of the envelopes, making for an interactive and educational experience.
Students should turn in their Letter to a Science Teacher Final Draft by Monday, 9/8. Students will take Roots 1.2 quiz on Friday, 9/12.
We are looking forward to a productive and engaging week!
Roots 1.2 words:
*post =after (think: postpone, postscript)
*gen=origin (think: generation, genesis)
micro =small (think: microscope, microorganism)
script =to write (think: manuscript, inscription)

Keepers (words from last week that will be on this week’s test): uni, bi, tri
English Language Arts
Welcome, readers and writers!
Last week, students worked on the text, “Can People Really Change?” as we discussed personality traits and deconstructed prompts to address all aspects of a writing assessment.
This week, students will work with the texts “Home” and “Scholarship Jacket” as we discuss character traits and associated vocabulary.
Students will need to continue bringing 6 packs of highlighters to class for annotations. Students should also have binders, tab dividers, and composition notebooks that are kept in the classroom at this point. Please contact me if this is something that your student needs.
The second grade in the gradebook is going in at the end of this week. This will be a composition notebook check where I see their Do Nows for the week and how well they completed them. This is a participation/completion grade.
World Language Newsletter
Read the weekly Deal World Language newsletter to find out more about the happenings in Chinese, French and Spanish classes.
Attendance
Parents and caregivers must submit excuse notes for attendance through Aspen GO—a mobile friendly version of Aspen Parent Portal, and the same platform used for school enrollment and reenrollment. Please visit the DCPS Attendance webpage for guidance on how to submit an excuse note.
According to DCPS, the system will go live on September 8. In the interim, students must bring a paper excuse note (tardy and/or absence) to the Welcome Center.
