As we prepare for our early release schedule on Friday, October 31, we wanted our Highcrest Families to have some tips for success.

Q: What are the school day hours that day?

A: The school day will run from 8:37 AM through 11:46 AM.

Q: Can students dress up for Halloween that day?

A: Yes! Students can dress up in school and age-appropriate costumes, but there are some limits to consider.

Q: Are there limits or restrictions for costumes that day?

A: Yes! For the school day, students should not:

  • Bring props (weapons, toys, light-sabers) for their costumes
  • Wear masks or face paint
  • Need to prepare and get dressed in any of the costumes while at school, come prepared
  • Wear inflatables as they will be in the deflated state throughout the school day

Additional considerations:

  • Students should be comfortable and wear shoes that allow them to navigate the stairs and building.

Candy While at School

We've heard from students that on their way to school, they are stopping with their bikes at a store like a Walgreens and picking up bags of candy, like bags of Jolly Ranchers. Students then pass these out and even attempt to sell them to peers before or after school. We imagine there may even be attempts to sell throughout the school day. Please help us by reminding students that they should not buy or sell materials at school, nor should they share food or candy here at school. We appreciate any reinforcement you can help provide in partnership with our school!

Building Procedures Regarding Outside Visitors

As always, it is our duty and highest priority to maintain our schools as safe places for students, staff, and families. During the school day, our schools are generally not open to the public. We have designated specific areas as private and restricted during the school day (including areas beyond our controlled front foyers as well as our playgrounds), which is applied to all visitors to our schools. Our protocols for visitors and for granting entry to our schools apply to all guests and help us to maintain safety and security for all. Thank you for your partnership as we all work together to keep our learning community safe.

Parent Education Events

On Wednesday night, D39 hosted an outstanding Parent Education event titled “Generative Artificial Intelligence for Parents and Caregivers.” Thank you to everyone who joined us live. A recording of last night’s presentation is now available online. Please bookmark this link as it will not be publicly available on our D39 Parent Education webpage.

Our next D39 Parent Education event, a presentation and meet-and-greet with acclaimed children’s book author Derrick Barnes, is set for Tuesday, Nov. 4. This will be an in-person only event at 6:30 pm in the Romona Elementary School auditorium. No registration is required and children are welcome to attend.

District 39 is also proud to co-sponsor Marc Brackett, Ph.D. for a Family Action Network Roundtable Workshop on Wednesday, Oct. 29 from 12-1:30 pm at the Glenview Public Library. The workshop will focus on Dr. Brackett’s most recent book “Dealing with Feeling: Use Your Emotions to Create the Life You Want,” a guide for regulating how we respond to our emotions to transform our life. Registration is required for this in-person event and space is limited.

Artificial Intelligence Guidance - Parents and Students

District 39 has implemented a new set of guidelines for the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for students, parents, and educators. Our work began with a representative sample of faculty/staff members, parents, and students who gathered in August for a full-day workshop. The facilitator helped expand our knowledge of AI, led us through a discussion on ethical considerations, and moved us toward the development of our guidance documents.

The resulting documents are intended to help summarize our philosophy toward AI and provide common language for AI use. With AI developing at a rapid pace, we hope you will take time to read and discuss with your child(ren) so they are aware of the expectations. You can access these documents here:

AI Guidelines for Parents | AI Guidelines for Students.

District 39 Educational Foundation Bingo Night!

Join the fun at the D39 Educational Foundation’s Annual Bingo Night on Friday, Nov. 14 from 6-8 pm at the Highcrest cafeteria! Excitement is in the air as the cards are covered and everyone is on the edge of their seats ready to yell, “Bingo!” Winners select prizes from a table full of games, toys, and gift cards. This fundraiser is fun for the whole family. Visit the D39 Ed Foundation website for more information and to purchase your tickets.

Board of Education

Committee of the Whole Meeting

The Board of Education will come together on Monday, Oct. 20 at 8 am for its monthly Committee of the Whole meeting at the Mikaelian Education Center. During this meeting, the Board will hear D39’s Fall Assessment Report, which includes benchmarking data from Fall NWEA MAP and aimswebPlus assessments, information on new norms for NWEA, and updated proficiency ratings for the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR). The Board will also hear presentations on updated Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for Goals 3 and 4 of our strategic plan, and receive updates regarding the 2025 tax levy and 2026 summer construction projects. Agendas and materials for all Board of Education meetings will be posted online the Friday prior to the meeting.

Board of Education Meeting – Oct. 24

Additionally, the Board of Education will convene on Monday, Oct. 27 at 7 pm for its monthly business meeting. That gathering will begin with a public hearing on the District’s e-learning plan, which must be renewed every three years, before transitioning to its regular business meeting. In addition to committee reports, the Board will be presented with the Spring 2025 IAR Report and Fall Enrollment Report while also hearing a review of the 2025 estimated tax levy.

Collaboration between Highcrest & Northwestern Baseball!

Dear Highcrest Families,

We’re excited to invite you to Highcrest Day at Northwestern Baseball on Sunday, October 19, for an afternoon of fun and community spirit!

  • Game Time: 1:00 p.m. – Northwestern vs. University of Chicago
  • Special Access: Starting at 12:30 p.m., Highcrest families will enjoy exclusive access to Northwestern’s practice facilities.

Students are encouraged to bring their creativity! They can design signs to cheer on the Wildcats, and the winning sign will earn a baseball signed by the entire Northwestern team.

This event is part of our ongoing partnership with Northwestern University Baseball, now in its second year. Through this collaboration, we aim to strengthen connections between our schools and create meaningful opportunities for students.

In the coming months, Northwestern players will visit homerooms to share tips on:

  • Balancing academics with other interests
  • Setting and achieving goals
  • Managing time effectively
  • Succeeding in middle school

We’re thrilled to continue this growing partnership and look forward to more unique experiences ahead. Stay tuned for updates—and we hope to see you at the game!

The Wilmette Rotary plans to resume our Big Book Drive this fall, October 1 through November 14, 2025. They request donations of gently used books (excluding textbooks, old atlases, encyclopedias, and dictionaries) for our Book Drive in the fall. Check out the Big Book Drive page for more details.

Donations can be made to the HMS Book Drive Box beginning October 1. Our Bin(s) will be located in our main lobby for students to drop them off until November 14.

HMS Handbooks

Ahead of the school year, it may be helpful to take a moment to review the following handbooks:

  • HMS Student Handbook
  • D39 Parent + Family Handbook
  • D39 Mobile Learning Handbook

In particular, we emphasize taking time to review the following from the HMS Student Handbook:

  • HAWKS Expectations
  • Smartwatches + Personal Devices
  • D39 Disciplinary Measures + Restorative Practices
  • HMS Health & Safety

As a homework assignment, we request that students sign and return the letter of agreement and D39 Mobile Learning Contract. We appreciate your family reviewing these with your child this school year.

Hawk Headlines will be sent weekly on Fridays!
