There are now only three weeks until the end of term, and we have entered an exciting phase of the year with the official beginning of Spring on Monday. This is really a great time of the year, as the days begin to lengthen and the weather improves, and we are able to enjoy the wonder of spring.
There have been signs of spring around for some time with large numbers of calves and lambs dotting roadside paddocks, and of course sightings of daffodils, spring flowers, and spring growth. After the dark cold days of winter, the arrival of spring is always welcome. There is a special magic about this season – it is a time of new and renewed growth, and hope. And of course the lead into summer, and summer activities (and cricket!!).
As someone new to this side of the mountain, the lush vegetation indicates much better growing conditions than most areas - climate, plenty of rain, and rich soil. The amazing School grounds are a prime example of this,
With the arrival of Spring, the Winter Sports Season is drawing to a close. I wish to thank all those people who have been involved this year. Sport plays a huge role in the personal growth and development of young people. However without the support of parents, whanau, and importantly coaches, children wouldn’t have the opportunity to grow through sport the skills and attitudes that contribute to their development as people. The hope also is that their love of sport will continue into adult life, and provide them with healthy lifelong recreational options.
For parents the weekly grind of getting kids to and from practices, and then to games on the weekend, can be tough at times. But in the overall scheme of things it is for only a very short period of your lives - soon your children will be all grown up and doing their own thing, and you may even find yourself missing the chaos of Saturday Sport.
Life here at School is very busy, as always, with The School Production - (“Blue Ribbon Belle”) currently a major focus. Any Production/Show is an absolutely massive undertaking. From the outside looking in, it is staggering how many moving parts there are, and how much coordination is required to bring it all together - but it always seems to work in the end.
The Production this year is a great example of the huge amount of organization and coordination required, particularly as the whole School is involved, with each Class allocated a part. Arts Teacher Kelly Waugh is Director/Producer and the energy behind the show. However she is well supported by Ian Robinson, who is responsible for the Technical side of things (lighting and sound), while many other Staff are also contributing.
One of the great advantages of being an Area School, is the range of specialist abilities that occurs naturally among the Staff - for example the Hard Materials Department (with Tutor Steven Leppard) has assisted building the props. So essentially, the Production is a real community effort.
Blue Ribbon Belle will be a highlight of 2025 - we hope you all take the opportunity to attend a performance next week.
Time is passing quickly for our NCEA Students, and this week they have been involved in benchmark exams. The ability to study effectively, and efficiently, is a learned skill. Acquiring the knowledge to pass examinations requires hard work and effort - that is why they are called examinations. In this day and age, when we often seem to spoon feed our young people, there is still no hiding from the fact that sometimes it is simply a matter of rolling the sleeves up, and working hard.
Learning, success at School, success in sport, success in life generally, requires effort, concentration, and application. Similarly passing exams requires effort, concentration, and application. That is simply a fact. The rewards however are substantial, but relate to the effort put in.
As mentioned above it has been a busy period. The Year 4-13 Cross Country on Wednesday was a huge success, with a very high level of participation, and excellent competition, across all age groups. The course here is nothing short of spectacular, as highlighted in the photos in this Newsletter, and on the School Facebook.
Thank you to the large number of parents and family members who turned out in support. Thanks also to Gemma Chambers, and Heather Jull for coordinating this event.

BOT News - Staffing Update
After a thorough selection process, Acting DP Sarah Oke, was last week upgraded to the role of Permanent Deputy Principal. Sarah is an integral member of this School and Community, and this step is a positive decision for the future direction and overall health of the School. Huge congratulations to her!!
The following Statements are from the Covering Letter she attached with her application, and provide insight into the strength of her commitment to this School:-
“......I choose to be at Coastal Taranaki School because I believe in our kura and its potential as a unique, seamless Area School, and I know I can contribute meaningfully to its continued growth.
….. At CTS, I’ve served on the FOCTS Committee, organised staff wellbeing and
morale events, planned farewells, and supported colleagues as a Team Leader,
Levels Teacher, and Bus Leader. I’ve led the Coastal Curriculum Inquiry Team and
the Kai mō ngā tamariki programme, Food in Schools initiatives. I have willingly
stepped in to lead restorative behaviour processes and consistently support my
peers with resources, time, and advice. I do all of this because I am invested - in
our people, in our place, and in our shared future.
…….I lead by example. I’m hands-on, I put my hand up, and I give my time,
knowledge, and support without expectation of recognition. I do this because I
believe he rau ringa e oti ai—many hands make light work.”
Advertising for the Role of Principal began on Monday. The Appointment Process will be completed in mid-October, and the successful applicant will begin in Term 1, 2026.

Junior Cross Country Years 0-3
We are excited to see you at our Junior Cross-Country run Wednesday 17th of September! To ensure everything runs smoothly, we kindly ask that you avoid calling your child over before or after the race. Instead, feel free to visit them in their designated seating area with their teacher. It's important that our teachers and students remain together and accounted for throughout the event. A spectator viewing area is marked on the attached map for your convenience. We encourage you to congratulate your runner after their race, but please go to them in their designated area to do so.
Clothing: Comfortable active clothing with layers for warmth before and after their race - No need to wear uniform Wednesday.
Footwear: Ensure your child wears appropriate running shoes for safety and comfort. It is an all grass course so bare feet are welcome.
Sun Protection: Please provide a hat as we will be outdoors, and weather can be unpredictable at this time of the year.
Snacks: A healthy snack for before and after the race to help them fuel/refuel.
Labelling Belongings: Make sure all clothing, drink bottles, and any other items are clearly labelled with your child's name to avoid mix-ups.
This ensures the children are well-prepared for both weather and the physical activity, with extra attention to their comfort and safety. If the weather ruins our plans we will make a decision by 9am. Keep an eye on HELIX and the Facebook page.

Kapa Haka
With Matua Luke's assistance and guidance, we continue to teach our tamariki rich te reo Maori language and waiata during our weekly kapa haka sessions. When we begin our lessons, we learn basic greetings, and when we practice our songs, we name dance moves. As New Zealanders our tamariki relish our weekly kapa haka sessions, Te Reo Māori is an essential component of our national identity.
We continue to practise our Production piece and look forward to the show.
Amazing Race
Ōākura School hosted an Amazing Race for Year 6s from Ōmata School, Ōākura School and Coastal Taranaki School during the first week in August. Races included finding a hidden number in a small bush setting (even the parents struggled to find it), paper plane distance race, stacking cards to make a two storey tower, throwing tennis balls into a bucket, bottle flipping and much more. It was a great morning, the sun was shining, and it was a great opportunity to get out and solve some interesting tasks with other students. Thank you again to the parents who helped with transport.
Senior School News
Kia ora koutou,
It is hard to believe we are already in Week 7 and quickly approaching September. In the senior end of the school, our ākonga are working hard to complete assessments, and next week we move into Benchmark and CAA Exam Week. All assessments and exams will be held in the whare, and it is vital that this area remains quiet during exam times. Each student is aware of which exams and assessments they need to attend. All exams will be digital (unless special considerations are required), so students must bring their own fully charged device. We do not have enough power outlets to charge devices during the exams. All students must be in the correct uniform for their exams. WITT students will still attend WITT on Thursday. Please see the attached timetable for exam details.
Last week our ākonga had a brilliant time at the Taranaki Careers Expo, taking the opportunity to connect with a wide range of training providers, employers, and tertiary institutions. They made the most of the chance to network, ask questions, and learn directly from the many people who shared their knowledge, experiences, and career pathways.
If you haven’t already, please complete the 2026 Intentions Form that was sent out by email and on Helix. Informing us of your child’s enrolment intentions, whether staying with us or moving to another school, is crucial. This allows us to plan effectively for staffing, resources, and class placements, ensuring smoother transitions for all. It also supports strong communication and positive partnerships between whānau and our kura.
Over the next two weeks, our Year 10 –12 ākonga will also be applying for their WITT courses. These courses provide an excellent opportunity to gain 20 Level 2 credits, while also enabling us to expand our curriculum and offer broader experiences, learning, and pathways for the future. Other kura in Taranaki only offer this opportunity to Year 12 akonga. CTS, being smaller in size, has the ability to enable our Year 11s this opportunity too. There is a strict criteria for being accepted into these courses. This form is for students to indicate their intentions for 2026. Its purpose is to help us support you in planning your pathway through school and beyond.
Prioritisation of Placements
Placements will be prioritised as follows:
1: Year 11 students (Year 12 in 2026)
2: Year 10 Students (Year 11 in 2026)
Selection will also consider:
Attendance
Commitment to learning
Ability to meet deadlines
Maturity and appropriate behaviour in and out of school
Capability to achieve at NCEA Level 2
Alternative Options
STAR Courses: Short courses are available for students who may find Level 2 academically challenging or who are not placed in WITT programs.
3+2 Programme (Level 3): Year 13 students can apply for a 3+2 programme, which includes two days at WITT and three days at school. Please note: if you plan to attend university in 2027, this pathway will need to be carefully considered and discussed with Mrs Oke.
Our senior school is currently working on updating the wall display outside the Foods room, opposite the hall. I have been gathering student voice about why they choose to be at CTS, as well as some reflections from staff. It is overwhelming to hear, again and again, how our ākonga describe CTS as feeling like home, like whānau, and safe. They have spoken about their strong sense of belonging and the positive relationships they share with staff. This is a true asset of being a small kura, and something we continue to work hard at developing and maintaining. As you come to the production in two weeks, please take a moment to stop by and view our Spotlight on Secondary display.
With so much happening at the moment, please don’t hesitate to email or call the school office if you would like to discuss any of these opportunities further. We have an open-door policy and warmly welcome these conversations.

Pre-enrolment at CTS
Kia ora koutou,
Whaea Annie, our new entrant teacher, is planning ahead. If you know of any preschoolers in our community, who may be turning five in the next year or two please share this Pre-enrolment at CTS with their families. Even if you have a child at the school already please fill the form out. It only takes a few minutes to do, but it is really important that we have an idea of student numbers so that we can plan ahead. This also ensures that all new families have all the information they need around Transition to School visits.
