Dear RSU 57 Families and Community Members,

As we begin a new school year, I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation for your continued support of our students, staff, and schools. This past week, we proudly welcomed 2,883 students back to our campuses, and the energy, excitement, and promise of the year ahead could be felt throughout each building.

We had a strong and positive start to the year, marked by several exciting highlights. Our open house events at each of our schools were exceptionally well attended, a true reflection of the partnership and enthusiasm that defines our RSU 57 community. We also celebrated our first win in football as we entered Class A competition—a proud moment for our athletes, coaches, and fans alike.

One of the most memorable moments of our school opening was hearing from Walker Vivian, a senior at Massabesic High School and student representative to the School Board. Walker shared thoughtful and inspiring words with our entire staff during our opening day kickoff, reminding us of the profound impact educators have on the lives of our students. His message set a meaningful and hopeful tone for the year ahead.

As we look to the months to come, I encourage each of you to stay connected and engaged in your child’s education. Whether through volunteering, maintaining close communication with teachers and support staff, or attending the many events and activities our students are involved in, your involvement plays a critical role in their success. It is through these collective efforts that we will create a rich and supportive environment where every student can thrive.

Thank you once again for your unwavering commitment to our schools. Together, we will make this a successful and enriching year for all.

With gratitude,

Stephen D. Marquis
Superintendent of Schools

Teacher Spotlight: Exploring Conservation in the Galápagos Teacher Spotlight: Exploring Conservation in the Galápagos

This summer, Ms. Manning a Science Teacher at Massabesic Middle School embarked on an unforgettable professional journey as a Fund for Teachers Fellow (FFT).

With the support of a $10,000 Fund for Teachers grant, she traveled to the Galápagos Islands to participate in the Galapagos Educator Course through Ecology Project International. Her fellowship focused on exploring biodiversity, climate change, and the effects of human activity on fragile ecosystems.

Her goal? To bring these real-world conservation lessons back to her classroom—igniting student creativity and engagement in environmental and climate action projects.

She was one of only three teachers from Maine (and among 355 preK–12 educators nationwide) to receive this prestigious grant in 2025. We’re incredibly proud to celebrate their commitment to experiential, globally relevant learning.

Check out her reflection on this transformative experience!

On Wednesday, August 20th, RSU 57 proudly welcomed thirty new educators during its annual New Teacher Orientation. The event marked an important milestone as these educators began their journey within the district.

Throughout the day, the new hires engaged in a series of sessions designed to familiarize them with RSU 57’s procedures, policies, and available resources. They had the opportunity to meet and interact with district leaders, support staff, and fellow educators, helping to build a strong sense of community and shared purpose.

More than just a day of logistics and introductions, the orientation emphasized RSU 57’s commitment to supporting its educators from the very start. By fostering collaboration and connection, the district aims to empower new staff members as they prepare to step into their classrooms and roles.

We are excited to welcome these dedicated professionals to the RSU 57 family and look forward to the positive impact they will have on our students and school communities.
