Kohlberg Elementary Newletter
Week of 5-25-26
I hope everyone had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend! We are down to just 9 days left in the 2025-26 school year, and our Coyotes are still actively engaged in instruction and campus activities each day. Thank you for your continued support throughout the year.
A huge thank you to all of the parents who have completed their student registration. We are currently at a 98% completion rate! We are also actively enrolling new students for our PreK3, PreK4, and Kindergarten classrooms for the upcoming school year.
This Friday will be our final Fitness Friday, and I look forward to seeing our families come out and join our Coyotes during their PE times for some fun and fitness together.
Thank you again for your partnership and support. Let’s finish the school year strong!

District of Innovation Plan
The El Paso ISD Board of Trustees recently approved the renewal of the district’s District of Innovation (DOI) Plan, which will take effect beginning in 2026-27 and continue through the 2030-31 school year.
A District of Innovation designation gives school districts more flexibility under Texas law to better serve students, staff, and families. For El Paso ISD, this flexibility helps support strong academic programs, college and career opportunities, and efficient district operations while continuing to maintain high expectations for students.
What this means for your child in the 2026-27 school year:
· Students must now meet the state attendance requirement to receive course credit. Under Texas law, students must attend at least 90% of the days a class is offered in order to earn credit or a final grade.
· El Paso ISD believes regular attendance is important to student success and classroom learning.
· Students whose attendance falls below the required threshold will be required to make up lost instructional time per policy (FEC) and district procedures.
· Participation in UIL and district sponsored events will not count against your student.
The renewal process included feedback from district committees, staff, and community representatives before final approval by the Board of Trustees.
Kohlberg will also host follow-up meetings and provide opportunities for families to ask questions and learn more about how the District of Innovation plan may impact your child and campus.
WIN Time
WIN Time stands for “What I Need.” It is a dedicated instructional block built into the elementary school day to ensure that every student receives support based on their individual learning needs. At EPISD elementary campuses, grades K-5 participate in WIN Time which is scheduled daily for 45 minutes during the regular school day. This time is a planned, purposeful part of your child’s learning—not extra homework or optional tutoring.
Why Is WIN Time Important?
WIN Time is designed to be flexible, so schools can respond quickly to student progress and adjust support as needed.
The goal of WIN Time is for every child to grow—academically, socially, and emotionally.
WIN Time helps ensure that:
• Students receive timely support when they are struggling with academic skills.
• Students who are meeting or exceeding grade-level expectations receive enrichment and extension opportunities.
• Instruction is personalized, targeted, and responsive to data.
• Schools meet state and district requirements for academic intervention and progress monitoring to include HB1416.
What Happens During WIN Time?
During WIN Time, students may be:
• Working in small groups
• Meeting with intervention teachers or specialists
• Receiving targeted instruction or practice
• Participating in enrichment projects or advanced learning
• Engaging in Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons
Some groups are flexible and may change throughout the year based on student progress and ongoing assessments.
Services Offered During WIN Time
WIN Time is used to provide a variety of supports and services, including:
Academic Intervention
Students who score at or below the 29th percentile on the i-Ready screener and/or students who need additional help or who did not meet the meet earn approaches on STAAR Reading and or Math receive targeted instruction in:
• Reading and literacy skills
• Math skills
• Foundation gaps identified through assessments
These interventions are data-driven and aligned to your child’s grade-level curriculum and state requirements (HB1416) for students who did not earn approaches on STAAR Reading and/or Math.
Enrichment and Advanced Learning
WIN Time allows students to deepen their knowledge and explore learning beyond the core curriculum.
Students who are at grade level or above and who earned approaches or higher on STAAR Reading and Math may participate in:
• Enrichment activities (Art, Music) for 5th grade (Band, Orchestra)
• Problem-solving and critical thinking tasks
• Project-based learning
• Gifted and Talented (GT) projects and instruction
