Village Voices: A Note From Mrs. Randolph

Hello, October! ๐Ÿ‚

It is hard to believe we have already turned the calendar to a new month. September was filled with learning names, establishing routines, figuring out arrival and dismissal, welcoming our youngest Vikings, celebrating together, and simply getting comfortable with one another.

Now we get to build on that foundation.

One word that has been on my mind a lot lately is belonging.

I want John Muir to be a place where every child walks through our doors knowing, โ€œThere is a place for me here.โ€ I want our students to know that someone notices when they arrive, someone misses them when they are gone, and there are people in this building who believe in themโ€”even on the days when they may not quite believe in themselves.

October gives us a wonderful opportunity to really focus on that message. Throughout the month, we'll be talking about kindness, inclusion, school safety, and what it means to make sure everyone has a place in our Village. You may even begin to see a special project taking shape in our hallways very soon. ๐Ÿ’™

But belonging isn't something we can create with a poster, an activity, or one special month.

It's created in the little moments.

It's inviting someone to sit with you. Saying hello to someone you don't usually talk to. Helping a friend who is struggling. Choosing kind words when you're frustrated. Celebrating someone else's success. And sometimes, it's simply noticing when someone might need a friend.

Those are things our Vikings can practice at school, at home, on the playground, and everywhere they go.

As we head into October, I hope you'll talk with your child about what belonging means to them. Ask them: When do you feel like you belong? What can you do to help someone else feel like they belong too?

Those could lead to some pretty wonderful conversations.

I'm excited about what we have planned for October, and even more excited to watch our Vikings continue to make this Village their own.

Because there should always be room for one more in our Village. ๐Ÿ’™

One Village. Every Viking. Every Day.

๐Ÿš— Dismissal

Look at us, Viking Villageโ€”we're getting pretty good at this! ๐Ÿ™Œ

Our arrival and dismissal routines continue to get smoother, and we want to say THANK YOU to our families for helping make that happen.

We see you displaying those car numbers, staying in your vehicles, following the cones, waiting patiently, and helping us keep things moving. Those little things make a BIG difference when we're safely moving hundreds of Vikings at the same time.

As we head into October, just a couple of reminders:

๐Ÿ‚ Fall weather can be unpredictable. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather, especially our walkers. And rememberโ€”LABEL those sweatshirts and jackets! They have an amazing ability to separate themselves from their owners during the school day. ๐Ÿ˜‚

๐Ÿš— Keep following the flow. Even when the line looks long, please continue following the established traffic pattern, cones, and staff directions. Predictability is what helps us keep everyone safe.

๐Ÿšถ Watch for our walkers. Please slow down and stay alert throughout the neighborhood, particularly around crosswalks, driveways, and our school entrances.

Most importantly, thank you for your patience and partnership. What felt a little chaotic during those first few days is becoming a routineโ€”and that's because we're all working together.

โค๏ธ Patience. ๐Ÿ’™ Grace. โš”๏ธ Safety.

One Village really can move a whole lot of Vikings! ๐Ÿ’™โš”๏ธ

Morning Arrival and Breakfast Reminder

Our doors open for students at 8:55 AM, and breakfast is available from 8:55โ€“9:25 AM. At 9:25, students are dismissed from the cafeteria so they can head to class and be ready to begin their school day.

If your Viking plans to eat breakfast at school, we ask that you please try to have them in the cafeteria by 9:15 AM. This gives them enough time to sit down, enjoy their breakfast, and finish eating without feeling rushed before heading to class.

๐Ÿฅž Eating breakfast at school? Aim for arrival by 9:15!

Thank you for helping our Vikings start their mornings fed, settled, and ready to learn! ๐Ÿ’™โš”๏ธ

๐Ÿ“š This Week's Tool: ๐Ÿค Friendship Problem, Mean Moment, or Bullying?

"They're bullying me!"

It's a phrase many parents hear at some pointโ€”and when we hear it, our protective instincts immediately kick in. โค๏ธ

But one of the important skills we can teach children is how to understand the difference between a friendship conflict, unkind behavior, and bullying.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Conflict happens when two children have a disagreement or problem with each other. Both children may be upset, and both may play a role in what happened.

๐Ÿ˜• Unkind behavior might be a hurtful comment, exclusion, or a poor choice. It still needs to be addressed, but one unkind moment doesn't necessarily mean a child is being bullied.

๐Ÿšจ Bullying generally involves behavior that is repeated, involves an imbalance of power, and is intended to hurt, intimidate, or exclude someone.

Why does knowing the difference matter?

Because our children need different tools for different situations.

Sometimes they need help solving a disagreement. Sometimes they need to learn how to apologize or set a boundary. And sometimes they absolutely need an adult to step in and help keep them safe.

A great conversation starter at home this week:

โ€œIf something happens with another student at school, who are three adults you could go to for help?โ€

Help your child identify those trusted adults before they need them.

And remind your Viking of something we want every child at John Muir to know:

๐Ÿ’™ You belong here. If something is making you feel unsafe or like you don't belong, tell an adult. We want to help.

โฐ Strong Habits Make Strong Vikings!

We spent September talking a lot about attendanceโ€”but here's the secret: good attendance isn't just a September thing!

Now it's time to turn it into a habit.

Vikings, you can help get yourself ready for a great school day too! Try getting your backpack ready the night before, laying out your clothes, getting to bed on time, and being ready to go in the morning.

Every school day is a fresh start. Some mornings might be harder than others, but building good routines now makes getting out the door a whole lot easier!

๐ŸŽ’ Tonight's Viking Challenge: Before you go to bed, make sure YOU know where your backpack and shoes are. Your grown-ups will thank you!

๐Ÿงก October = KINDNESS + UNITY + BELONGING

October is National Bullying Prevention Month, and throughout the month we're going to talk about how each of us can help make John Muir a place where everyone feels safe, included, and like they belong.

And here's something important:

Kindness doesn't have to be a BIG thing.

๐Ÿ‘‹ Say hello.

๐Ÿช‘ Make room.

๐ŸŽฎ Invite someone to play.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Give a compliment.

๐Ÿค Help someone who needs it.

๐Ÿ‘€ Notice when someone is being left out.

And if something doesn't feel right or someone is making you feel unsafe, tell an adult you trust. Asking for help is a strong choice.

๐Ÿ’™ This Week's Viking Challenge

Look around your classroom, lunch table, playground, or bus and ask yourself:

โ€œWhat can I do today to make our Village a little kinder?โ€

Then do it. ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿ’™ One Village. Every Viking. Every Day.

KINDERGARTEN FAMILIES

We invite our kindergarten families to join us for our Kindergarten Senior Walkโ€”a special tradition that connects our newest Vikings with our graduating seniors! There is something pretty amazing about watching our littlest learners walk alongside students who are getting ready to take their next big step beyond Parma City Schools. ๐Ÿ’™ It is a wonderful reminder of just how quickly these school years go and a memory we hope our kindergarten students and families will treasure. We hope you'll join us and help our newest Vikings begin a tradition they can someday complete as seniors themselves! โš”๏ธ

Marco's School Challenge Is Coming To The Viking Village

Who doesn't love a night when someone else makes dinner AND it helps our school? ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ’™

We are excited to partner with Marco's Pizza for the Marco's School Challenge, a fundraiser that will run October through April!

Here's how it will work:

๐Ÿ• Kindergartenโ€“2nd Grade will have a Marco's School Challenge night on the last Wednesday each month.

๐Ÿ• 3rd & 4th Grade will have their night on the last Thursday each month.

๐Ÿ“ฑ On your child's scheduled Marco's night, watch TalkingPoints! We will send the flyer and ordering information directly to families that day so you'll have everything you need to participate.

Then comes the easy partโ€”order pizza, enjoy dinner, and support John Muir! ๐Ÿ™Œ

Our first School Challenge nights are:

๐Ÿ• Kโ€“2: Wednesday, October 28

๐Ÿ• Grades 3โ€“4: Thursday, October 29

The challenge will continue each month through April, so there will be plenty of opportunities to participate throughout the school year.

Thank you to Marco's for partnering with our Viking Villageโ€”and thank you to our families for supporting John Muir. We can't think of a much easier (or tastier!) way to fundraise! ๐Ÿ•โš”๏ธ

Watch TalkingPoints on your grade level's Marco's Day for that month's flyer and ordering details!
