Westchester Middle School Newsletter

FRIDAY, MAY 2, 2025
Message from Mrs. Seiss
Dear Westchester Middle School Families,
Thank you for another great week at WMS! As we begin the month of May—the final month of the school year—there’s a lot happening, and we want to make sure you’re informed and prepared.
We are currently completing ILearn make-up sessions and have begun End-of-Year NWEA testing in both Reading and Math. Next week, our 8th grade Science students enrolled in Biology 1 will take their ILearn assessment. Please help ensure your student is ready by having them bring a fully charged iPad, eat a healthy breakfast, and get a good night’s rest'.
Please note: Tuesday, May 6th is an eLearning Day for all Duneland Students. Students will complete their work through Canvas, and we encourage them to check their modules for teacher office hours and other important information.
We are also excited to kick off Teacher Appreciation Week! This is a great time to recognize the incredible educators who make a difference every day. We invite families and students to consider writing a note or sending a card to a teacher who has made a meaningful impact this year.
This school year has been unique for these 8th graders! Since LMS and WMS 8th graders were together at Chesterton Middle School as 7th graders last year, we have decided to combine our 8th Grade Farewell Dance with Westchester Middle School (for this year only) on May 23, 2025 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The cost will be $10 per student and expected attire is semi-formal. Please see the below for more information.
There are many important events and activities coming up in these final weeks, so please review the full list of events and details included in this week's newsletter.
As always, thank you for your continued support!
Respectfully,
Mrs. Lauren Seiss, WMS Principal
Celebrating National Principals Day – May 1st
Principal Lauren Seiss
National Principals Day is a special opportunity to recognize and celebrate the hard work, dedication, and leadership of school principals across the country. Every day, principals play a vital role in shaping the culture and success of our schools. They are not only administrators but also mentors, advocates, problem-solvers, and role models for students, teachers, and staff.
From creating safe and inclusive learning environments to supporting teachers and ensuring students reach their full potential, principals wear many hats. Their work often happens behind the scenes, but their impact is felt throughout every classroom and hallway.
On this day, we extend our heartfelt thanks to all principals for their unwavering commitment to education and for guiding our schools with strength, compassion, and vision. Whether through a note of appreciation, a kind gesture, or a simple "thank you," let's make sure our principals know how much they are valued.
Happy National Principals Day!
Scheduled eLearning Day on May 6
The Duneland School Corporation will participate in a scheduled eLearning day on Tuesday, May 6 and will follow the 2024-2025 eLearning Guidelines for a scheduled Online eLearning day - PLANNED ASYNCHRONOUS.

Multi-tiered Systems of Support
Duneland Schools supports students using the Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) framework. This system identifies individual student needs and outlines a plan to support those needs to ensure success for every student. The levels of support can look different based on criteria such as a student’s academic, behavioral, or social-emotional needs. In MTSS, support is provided through intervention TIERS.
Tier 1 is whole-class core instruction.
Tier 2 is whole-class core instruction + additional targeted instruction (often small group).
Tier 3 is whole-class core instruction + additional targeted instruction + intensive intervention.
Our MTSS goal is to support students' overall well-being by identifying their needs as early and efficiently as possible. Once needs are established, schools assign targeted, research-based interventions. Throughout the process, data is collected to monitor student progress.
The MTSS process prioritizes ongoing collaboration between teachers, administrators, specialists, and families to ensure effective implementation and appropriate support for ALL students.
Next week....

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED for Duneland Chamber 8th Grade Reality Check
8th Grade Reality Check is set for May 9, 2025, from 7:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. at Liberty Middle School, located at 50 W 900 N in Chesterton. For more than 20 years, this event has been preparing 8th grade students from the Duneland area on how to be successful in life after graduation.
Students are given a predetermined salary that they would earn in their chosen profession at age 28. During 8th Grade Reality Check, they visit tables where they pay such expenses as taxes, housing, childcare, etc. Some do end up in bankruptcy, while others may have a little money left over at the end. The ones that have remaining funds can “spend” their money on imaginary rewards such as investments, trips, concerts, motorcycles and so on.
The Reality Check is organized by the Duneland Chamber of Commerce and the Duneland School Corporation. The event takes over 120 volunteers each year. Volunteers are welcome to take part in the 8th Grade Reality Check for either a half day or whole day. Morning sessions are from 7:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., and afternoon sessions are from 11:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Lunch is provided for all-day volunteers. Volunteers should contact Rachel Campbell at the Duneland Chamber of Commerce at 926-5513 or by email at rachel@dunelandchamber.org. Volunteers can also register online www.dunelandchamber.org/events

Artificial Intelligence in the Classroom
Did you know Artificial Intelligence (AI) dates back to the 1950s? John McCarthy introduced the term while his computer science team explored the notion that machines, just as humans, should be able to use information and reason to solve problems and make decisions. By the 1970s, computers were the “wave of the future” and demonstrated the ability to think abstractly and mirror human language processing. In the 1980s, work to connect information from a user’s experience to computers began. This enhanced the experience and connection beyond technology’s ability to share information and added a personalized humanistic component. The 2000s brought us to where we are today with access to Generative AI models that can create human-like content that is trainable through advanced human interaction and feedback.
This small bit of background information brings us to today and the impact that AI is having on our classrooms. Although AI may seem like a new concept, it has been slowly making its way into our lives for many years, and it’s certainly not going away. So, how do educators seek to understand the world that our students are living in and best prepare them for what their future looks like concerning technology? In Duneland, we began by accepting the potential impact of this “new” tool and built opportunities for students to practice using AI in appropriate ways in the classroom.
Duneland School Corporation formed an AI committee this school year, and their first task was to create usage guidelines for students. The team was comprised of teachers, school administrators, and district administrators. Together, they worked to build the Generative AI Acceptable Use Scale. This scale will be used in classrooms to establish expectations for classroom AI use and teach students how to use AI appropriately. The next charge of the committee is to establish guidelines for teacher usage as it pertains to providing students with feedback and grading student work.
There are still many unknowns, and we need to continue to work through some uncharted territory to land in the right spot. Ultimately, we want to support our students in their preparation for future enrollment, employment, and enlistment, while staff continue to learn how to use and support AI in the classroom.
Capital Improvements for 2025
The Duneland School Corporation will continue to improve current facilities to enhance the student experience with the following capital improvements in 2025: playground replacements at Bailly, Brummitt, Jackson, and Liberty elementary schools and soccer stadium renovations and carpet replacement at Chesterton High School. This presentation below provides additional details on the scope of each project. Concept drawings and timelines regarding 2021-2025 capital improvement projects are available on the DSC website.
ILEARN Checkpoints Pilot
Westchester Middle School 7th grade Math students and Liberty Middle School 8th grade ELA students will be participating in the ILEARN Checkpoint pilot this year. Assessments will be condensed and focus on limited standards during each of the three checkpoints

DSC to Launch New Communication Platform in 2025-2026
ParentSquare, the new communication platform, allows parents and guardians in DSC to receive all of their communications from the district, schools, classrooms and school activity groups in one unified app and service.
Duneland School Corporation has adopted ParentSquare as its new communication platform for the 2025-2026 school year and will begin inviting DSC families to verify their accounts over the next few months before launching in June.
ParentSquare is a communication platform designed for schools to connect with students’ families and keep them informed. It’s used by K–12 schools and districts to streamline messaging - such as announcements, attendance notifications, event reminders, one-on-one messages, and more - into a single, user-friendly interface. This decision has followed careful consideration of the needs of our school community as well as laws and regulations surrounding student data privacy. ParentSquare will help us to centralize messages and announcements to improve engagement with our students’ parents and guardians.
By unifying multiple tools into one communications app and service, ParentSquare provides a seamless experience for parents and staff. Parents will be able to keep track of news, activities and events from all their children’s schools in one place.
DSC hopes that ParentSquare’s intuitive, two-way platform will foster greater communication and family involvement. With ParentSquare, parents can enjoy photos posted by teachers, fill out forms and permission slips, sign up for parent-teacher conferences, check grades and attendance, and much more. School staff and parents can engage in both one-to-one and group messaging with real-time language translation.
“Effective school-to-home communication has never been more important, which is why Duneland School Corporation adopted the ParentSquare communication platform. We’re looking forward to reaching 100% of our families no matter where they are, unifying all our communications tools, and adopting a more eco-friendly approach by reducing the amount of paper used to send important communications,” said Bridget Martinson, DSC director of Public Relations/Marketing.
DSC’s partnership with ParentSquare will enable stronger engagement between school and home, and help empower everyone within the school community to stay connected and informed. For more information on ParentSquare, please visit www.parentsquare.com.
