Celebrating a Great Teacher: Gina Schindel

Last week, in recognition of Extra Yard for Teachers Week, Shorewood High School physics teacher and head girls’ cross-country coach Regina “Gina” Schindel was nominated for the College Football Playoff Foundation’s Great Teacher Spotlight!

Across 22 years of teaching physics and 24 years of coaching cross-country, Gina has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to young people. Now in her sixth year at Shorewood, she continues to expand access and opportunities for students interested in physics while growing our girls’ cross-country program and creating a team culture rooted in belonging, perseverance, and personal growth.

Whether helping students navigate a complex physics concept or encouraging runners through a challenging mile, Gina builds confidence, resilience, and a belief in what students can accomplish. Please join us in celebrating Coach Schindel and thanking her for the many ways she supports our students and strengthens the Shorewood community!

SHS CONFERENCES OCT 13 / 15

Fall Parent/Caregiver-Teacher Conferences are next week! Please read this letter for details and instructions on how to sign up.

Please note: Virtual conference sign-up must be completed by 4:00 p.m. on Monday, October 12.

As part of our in-person conferences on Thursday, we will also be holding a facial tissue drive in the North Gym. If you would like to donate a box or two, please bring them with you to the in-person conferences. We will have a donation box right when you walk in!

We hope to see you there, either virtually or in person!

Please Give Thanks to Our Teachers!

Our teachers will be working long days as they transition from their regularly scheduled classes into evening conferences.

To show our appreciation, we are providing easy, grab-and-go dinner options so teachers can quickly grab a meal between their regular school day and conferences.

Please consider contributing a monetary donation to help provide dinner for our teachers!

We have approximately 50 teachers on staff and expect to spend about

8–10 per teacher for each evening.

Venmo donations can be sent to: https://venmo.com/u/Erica-HansenFrank

If you would like to arrange an alternative payment option, please email Erica Hansen-Frank <erica.hansenfrank@gmail.com>

Thank you for helping us show our teachers how much we appreciate all they do for our students!

SHOREWOOD SCHOOL DISTRICT NEWS SHOREWOOD SCHOOL DISTRICT NEWS

IMPORTANT LETTER FROM DISTRICT NURSE GABOR

Dear Parent or Guardian,

We are writing to inform you about a new school health program that will make schools safer for individuals with asthma and anaphylaxis and to share some important health reminders.

In 2023, Wisconsin passed a law allowing your child’s school to maintain and administer a quick-relief asthma inhaler to treat life-threatening respiratory distress at school. Similarly, Wisconsin law allows schools to stock FDA-approved nasal epinephrine spray (Neffy) as our emergency medication for anaphylaxis. All Shorewood schools now have a stock albuterol inhaler and Neffy, in addition to an epinephrine auto-injector (EpiPen). These may be utilized by our health team and first responders for urgent and emergent situations only. These stock medications do not replace the need for students with prescribed emergency medications to have their own at school.

In addition, as we start the year, we wanted to share a few reminders from the health offices:

  • Immunizations: Wisconsin Student Immunization Law (Wis. Stat. § 252.04) requires all students to meet a minimum number of required immunizations to attend school. You may check your child’s records using the Wisconsin Immunization Registry (WIR) and use this form to update your child’s information. Immunization requirements can be waived only for health, religious, or personal conviction reasons. Your child's immunization record must meet Wisconsin State requirements by the 30th day of school, 10/14/2026. Either by having your child receive all required immunizations or by filling out, signing, and returning the form waiving immunization to the school.

  • Medications at school: If your child needs to take medication (prescription or over-the-counter) at school, this form must be completed every school year for all prescription, emergency, and over-the-counter medications. Please bring the completed form, with the prescribing provider’s signature for prescriptions, and medication in its original packaging to the main office at your child’s school.

  • Health conditions and support plans: If your child has any medical diagnoses that require specific care, it is important to keep the school informed. Some students may require an Individualized Health Plan (IHP) or an Emergency Action Plan (EAP) at school to help support health needs while they are at school. Medical diagnoses that should be reported include, but are not limited to:

  • Seizure Disorder

  • Severe Allergies (Allergy Action Plan)

  • Asthma (Asthma Action Plan)

  • Diabetes

  • Feeding support needs (G-tube)

  • When to stay home: Please keep your child home if they have:

    • An illness that significantly impacts their ability to learn.

    • A temperature of 100°F or higher.

    • Vomiting

    • Diarrhea

    • Untreated live head lice.

    • A confirmed communicable disease that requires students to stay at home.

Please reach out with any questions you may have related to this information or your child’s specific needs. We look forward to working together to ensure a safe and healthy school year!

Kindly,

Cassandra Gabor

FALL CLEAN UP

Please join us on Saturday, November 7th for one of Shorewood's favorite events, the annual fall yard clean-up. Volunteers help older and disabled neighbors with light yard work. It's a great way for families, students (anyone!) to connect with neighbors and to give back to the community. No job takes more than 3 hours. Volunteers get a free t-shirt, a donut, Starbucks coffee and a Culver's coupon. NHS students earn volunteer hours.
