Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve

A big congratulations to Kate Meyer, who was named the 2025-2026 SD State FFA Secretary at last weekend's State Convention in Brookings! Kate will serve as a state officer for the organization in a leadership role, helping inspire and educate high school FFA members around the state.

This recognition really stands out as the last state officer was George Twitero, State Reporter on the 1960-61 officer team, 65 years ago. Way to go and good luck, Kate!

Also receiving recognition for four years of hard work with the awarding of their State FFA Degrees are Sidney Johnson, Taylor Snaza, Bradley Hanson, and Kate Meyer. Not pictured are Mason Schultz and Hannah Hannasch. In the CDE events Sidney Johnson was awarded a silver in Horse Evaluations, while in Dairy Cattle Evaluation Justin Muehler brought home a silver and Cody Nelson, bronze.

Theatre on the Road

Ms. Prendergast's theatre class students traveled to the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center at SDSU this last weekend to take in the musical Bright Star.

After the performance students were treated to a tour of the facility where they got to see where all the behind-the-scenes work and theatre magic happen.

A big thanks to the American Legion for hosting Mr. Bartlett's seniors for their Government Day!

SHS students began the day touring the Roberts County courthouse where they learned about county government and heard from county employees about their jobs. Among the interesting facts presented are that the courthouse has records that date back to the late 1800s and also has over 13000 parcels of land that have to be appraised.

At City Hall, Mayor Jaspers gave students some insight into city government. Students found it interesting that the city picks up 130 tons of trash a month and that one City Council Member has served since 1973!

Finally, Officer
Appel and other deputies gave seniors a tour of the jail where they got to see squad cars, witness a taser demonstration, and learn that the jail can house about 90 people at a time, and costs 2 million a year.

Students finished up the day with a mock grand jury trial and returned to school to recap and discuss how their future tax dollars will be put to work and the importance of being engaged citizens.

Reading Ready!

Students in Ms. Lady's English I class have spent the last several weeks preparing book reports! Visiting the library to choose the perfect book, spending time reading, and examining different elements of character development, plot points, and analysis of the text have all been pieces of this project. It's been great to see students with a book amongst their school supplies and enjoying the wide variety of literature the library has to offer!
