Continuous Improve Plan - Attendance Wins!

Part of our Continuous Improvement Plan for the 2023/24 School year was to focus on attendance rates by working to decrease chronic truancy from 41.45% to 25% through student connections and engagement. This percentage is an indicator of students that would be considered truant missing 10 or more days.

As a school, we were able to meet our attendance goal for the 2023-2024 school year and greatly improve our attendance rate! We went from 41.45% truancy last year to 25.4% for this school year! This is a big win and can not be done without the continued support and partnership with families. Thank you!

Monthly grade-level assemblies have been just one element SMS has added to strengthen student connection and engagement. Shown are 8th Graders getting silly during games played at their assembly. Mrs. Bonneville is always a part of shenanigans.

Healthy Minute from our Health Office

GET OUTSIDE! FRESH AIR! VITAMIN D!

With the weather warming up, the sun shining and the days getting longer, now is the most important time to spend LOTS of time outdoors! Middle School aged students should aim for at least 60 minutes of play OUTSIDE every day, especially when the weather is so nice! Fresh air and vitamin D in the form of sunshine are very important for a healthy lifestyle, immune system, and mental health state. Spending more time outdoors helps regulate your sleep cycle as well. Did you know that spending just 30 minutes in nature every day can boost your mood and increase your happiness hormones? Schedule a playdate with a friend, walk your pet, go for a bike ride, build a fort in the woods, play at the park, anything to get yourself outdoors! It’s good for your health :)

RiverQuest is a field trip that most sixth graders from the Twin Ports area participate in every year. Students experience hands-on activities at 12 different educational stations aboard the Vista Star and in the DECC. They get to see our port from the water as we tour the Duluth/Superior harbor. They learn about the St. Louis River ecosystem and the related commercial, industrial, and recreational activities that happen within this ecosystem. Find more information about RiverQuest here. We are thankful our 6th Grade students had this amazing opportunity!

The Digital Literacy students worked together to build the tallest tinfoil towers to kick off their coding unit. The classes learned about perseverance and the problem solving process while having some fun! Now on to coding!

New 8th Grade Leaders

Congratulations to our students selected to be 8th Grade Leaders for the 2024/25 school year. This process aims to identify students with strong leadership potential. It emphasizes both written and verbal communication skills, teacher insights, and school staff evaluation.

The process of leadership selection is extensive. Emails were sent out by Mrs. Thompson to notify students about the application form. All applicants had to request two teacher recommendations. Individual interviews with students who completed the application and had teacher recommendations were conducted with adult staff members and current 8th grade leaders. A review of disciplinary records and truancy records was conducted to ensure applicants would be positive role models of work, respect and belong. This process allows for a thorough evaluation of potential leaders and ensures the selection of a well-rounded team capable of guiding and inspiring their peers.

Thank you to all who applied, there are so many amazing students here at Superior Middle School. We hope all students will work to make SMS a better place.

Summer School starts June 17th

Along with the many classes offered at our schools, we have partnered with the City of Superior Parks and Recreation Department which offers outdoor playground programs throughout the area. Of course, these programs depend on if the weather cooperates.

The Summer Playground Program is a weather-dependent program scheduled from 11:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, starting in the middle of June and ending in the middle of August. The program's goal is to provide supervised play and outdoor fun in a safe environment for children ages 5-11 in Superior.

Cooking for Life Summer Class
