Important TMSFootball Message02/24/2021

Attention Current 7th and 8th Grade Football Players

Good morning Brave family. I hope all are doing well.

As most of you are aware, Varsity Head Football Coach, Larry Cox has left Talwanda and is now at Franklin. We are waiting for the administration to name a new varsity Head Football Coach. I expect to hear something very soon. Coach Johnson and Coach Zimmerman are running the THS football program until the new head coach is named.

As the Head TMS Track & Field Coach, as well as the Head TMS Football Coach, I am very disappointed with the turnout of football players. I currently only have two eighth-graders out and a few 7th graders who have come out for track and field. I have talked to Coach Johnson and he has informed me that there is an average of five 8th grade players at weight lifting every day at THS. This has to change.

Research clearly shows the benefits of track and field for football players as well as weight lifting. You only have to look at current college and pro football players. The overwhelming majority of them were multi-sport athletes, and most if not all of them participated in track and field. Not only did they compete in track and field, but they also still found time to get into the weight room.

So the question is, why aren't more TMS football players coming out for track and field? Why aren't more 8th-grade football players showing up for weight lifting? Do you not want to get better? The only real excuse for not coming out for track and field is if you are competing in another sport, like baseball.

Fellas, we have to change our culture! We have to think differently! I am challenging all of you to be the change! I know last football season was rough here at TMS. If we want a different outcome, we must do things differently. You have to buy in and commit to becoming better.

8th graders may be asking, how can I lift weights and still compete in track and field? Well, the TMS Track & Feild team practices every day at THS. You would lift weight first, and then come out to track and field practice. It's really that simple.

Once track and field season ends, June starts the summer conditioning program for THS and TMS. OHSAA is allowing coaching during the summer off-season. This means we will not just be running and conditioning the entire time. We will actually be practicing our offense and defense starting in June this year. This is HUGE. We must take advantage of it. I need you to show up! We will start organizing football season toward the end of May with parent and player meetings. Stay tuned.

Finally, please don't forget that your 4th quarter grades will determine your eligibility for the next football season. Grades come first! If any of you need help with anything, please come talk to me. I am here to help.

Take care and Go Brave!

Sincerely,

Coach Huelsman
