Vulnerability Assessment Vulnerability Assessment

by Mrs. Wetzel

On Wednesday, January 18 and Friday, January 20, Hale`iwa Elementary had a Vulnerability Assessment conducted by the DOE Director of Safety, Security and Emergency Preparedness Branch, Mr. Max Mendoza. A Vulnerability Assessment is defined as “an industry-wide and multi-functional process that detects and evaluates weaknesses and vulnerabilities of an organization’s internal and external foundations; and provides recommended solutions to mitigate weaknesses and vulnerabilities”.

The assessment reviewed the school’s Cybersecurity infrastructure and the overall vulnerabilities of our campus and operations. The results for both parts were quite positive. We wanted to share some of the positive practices that were recognized by Mr. Mendoza and some of the recommendations that were left for the school. Please note that what is being shared are the most pertinent practices and recommendations from the assessment. This is not the entire list from the report. Overall, the results were quite positive.

Some of the positive practices that were commended by the Vulnerability Assessment are:

  • Overall security procedures in the main office are effective

  • Phone, intercom, and public address systems capabilities exist between main administration office and classrooms

  • The school has an established Emergency Action Plan

  • Custodians conduct morning sweeps of campus

  • Classroom window visibility was not impeded

  • Access to the campus is restricted to only contracted workers who provide services to the school.

  • Parents are requested to check in at the front office and not go beyond the flag pole unless authorized by the office.

  • There is a significant presence of adults providing active supervision of students before, during and after school.

There were also recommendations for improvement from Mr. Mendoza. The school has already begun to implement some of the recommendations that could be done immediately. There are recommendations that will take more time to work on, but we have begun that work already.

Here are some of the recommendations that have been immediately implemented:

  • Keep all classroom doors in the locked position throughout the entire day.

  • Ensure that all staff members are wearing the ID badges at all times.

  • Staff members should wear safety vests whenever they are providing supervision so that the noticeable presence of adults acts as a deterrent to possible intruders.

  • The school has 2 AEDs located in the cafeteria and in the health room. It is recommended that another AED is purchased and installed towards the back of campus. Hale`iwa has submitted our order for another AED to be placed in G building.

Here are some recommendations that are very important that the school is currently working on:

  • The school has 2 AEDs located in the cafeteria and in the health room. It is recommended that another AED is purchased and installed towards the back of campus.

    • Hale`iwa has submitted our order for another AED to be placed in G building.

    • Consider installing combination push locks for the unlocked library doors and side office door. Hale`iwa has requested quotes for these locks.

  • Consider installing speed bumps in the parking lots.

    • Hale`iwa has an upcoming parking lot paving project. For this project, we are requesting speed bumps.

  • Consider installing surveillance cameras around campus in high traffic or high risk areas

    • Hale`iwa is soliciting quotes for cameras.

We want all of our families to be reassured that we take the safety and security of everyone on our campus very seriously. As we continue to work on the recommendations from the Vulnerability Assessment, we will update everyone with our progress.

ESSENCE Week ESSENCE Week

Ke aka o Hale`iwa...Kupono me ke aloha no ke ahona o ke ao

The ESSENCE of Hale`iwa...Live life to the fullest with honor, respect, kindness and love to make the world a better place.

Our school had a great time celebrating our ESSENCE this week. Students were able to work on different activities each day to celebrate our essence and wear a different color each day. Each class competed for spirit points and our first grade class won first place. Ms. Brooks's Kindergarten and Mrs. Jes's Preschool class tied for second place.

Our visiting Vice Principal, Ms. K, taught our school a fun cheer for each day as well. Unfortunately, due to the rain, we were unable to take our school heart picture, but we will try again in a few weeks. Overall, we had a great week celebrating our ESSENCE!

Congratulations, Cane Fires! Congratulations, Cane Fires!

Please join us in congratulating our Hale`iwa CANE FIRES robotics teams

for their exceptionally successful robotics season.

Here are some highlights from the VEX IQ State Championship on January 28:

  • Our 5th-grade team ended the qualification rounds with a ranking of 7 out of 33 teams.

  • Our 6th-grade team ended the qualification rounds with a ranking of 1.

  • These rankings qualified both teams for the finals.

  • The 5th-grade team finished with a score of 82 with their alliance team, Akamai Bots from Kaunakakai Elementary on the island of Molokai.

  • The 6th-grade team scored 189 (the highest score for the entire day) with their alliance team, Hawaii Girl Power from Waipahu.

  • The 6th graders also earned the 4 highest scores during the qualification rounds with scores of 177, 164, 152, and 144.

Our 6th-grade team topped off their PHENOMENAL season with the following awards:

  • Amaze Award

  • Robot Skills Champion -- repeat from last year

  • Teamwork Champion -- repeat from last year

  • They also secured a spot in the WORLDS competition in Dallas, Texas in May.

We are very proud of all of our robotics students for their hard work and for representing Hale`iwa so admirably. All of them embodied the ESSENCE of Hale`iwa at the state tournament today.

  • Grade 5 team: Brian Tudor, Eiden Acorda-Manmano, Noelle Velles-Lumoya, and Kawena Nakai.

  • Grade 6 team: Mykaela Simpson, Marissa Moody, Pressli Garcia, and Liam Ejercito.

Mahalo to our students, staff, and families for your support and dedication this robotics season!

EOEL: Butterflies EOEL: Butterflies

by Mrs. Angelica

Bye Bye Butterfly! Our class has been so lucky, as our caterpillars have been hard at work turning into so many chrysalis's for us! We love being able to watch the process, and then of course wait for the grand finale of being able to release a butterfly back out onto our school grounds! Each one of our students has had the chance to release their very own butterfly who they also get to name as well! Our butterfly's all have very unique names from "Rainbow, Marshmallow, to even one named Spiderman!"

Kindergarten: Discovery Center Field Trip Kindergarten: Discovery Center Field Trip

by Ms. Brooks

The kindergartners had so much fun on their field trip to the Discovery Center! They got to use their imagination to become doctors, optometrist, bus drivers, firemen, bankers, police officers, etc. They also got to discover what it is like to be a pilot and a flight attendant. They were even able to explore the lives of different people who live around the World. So much to do and so much fun at the Discovery Center!
