Week 19

Message from the Principal
Happy 2026!
Dear Families, Staff, and Students,
Welcome back, and Happy New Year! I hope everyone enjoyed a restful and joyful Winter Break. As we return to school and begin the 2026 year together, I am excited to refocus our energy on learning, growth, and success for every student.
The start of a new year is a powerful opportunity to reset routines and recommit to what matters most. Two key priorities will guide our work this winter: robust attendance and rigorous instruction.
Being present at school every day allows students to stay connected to learning, build strong habits, and make consistent academic progress. We deeply appreciate our families’ partnership in ensuring students arrive on time and ready to learn each day.
In our classrooms, teachers are prepared to engage students in high-quality, rigorous instruction that challenges thinking, encourages curiosity, and supports students in reaching high expectations. Through intentional planning and a focus on meeting the needs of all learners, we will continue to create joyful and meaningful learning experiences for our students.
Thank you for your continued support and collaboration. Together, we will make 2026 a year of strong attendance, powerful instruction, and continued success for our entire school community.
Warm regards,
Tiffany Melgar
Principal
Honor Roll
The annual Honor Roll, presented by Educational Results Partnership (ERP), is part of the national Campaign for Business and Education Excellence. The Campaign engages business leaders in recognizing successful schools and educational systems that are preparing students with the fundamental skills needed to succeed in the workforce and in life. For ten years, ERP has presented the Honor Roll, the only school recognition program offered in partnership with state and local business leaders, using solely objective student achievement data as the criteria for recognition. The goal of the Honor Roll is to identify and highlight successful schools and districts and to encourage collaboration among educators on best practices for raising student achievement.
Multnomah has proudly been named an Honor Roll school once again for 2025. Congratulations to all of our staff, parents, and scholars! This marks our fifth consecutive year receiving this honor. Go Eagles!
If you review the compilation of our data from the past three years, you will see steady growth each and every year.
Tardies
Before we went off on Winter break we were plagued by tardies and absences. Many families are surprised to learn that even brief, frequent tardies can have a meaningful impact on a child’s learning and well-being, especially in the elementary years. Research in child development and education consistently shows that being on time matters, not just being present.
Research indicates that students who arrive late frequently may:
Feel embarrassed or anxious entering a classroom already in session
Miss morning community-building activities that help children feel connected
Struggle with a sense of belonging or confidence
Over time, these experiences can affect a child’s self-esteem, peer relationships, and attitude toward school. Habits form early! Elementary school is where children develop lifelong habits around responsibility, punctuality, and attendance.
Research shows that attendance patterns, including tardiness, formed in early grades are strong predictors of:
Future attendance in middle and high school
Academic persistence
Overall school success
Helping children arrive on time teaches them that school is important and that their learning time is valued.
Our Shared Goal
We know that mornings can be challenging, and we appreciate families’ efforts to get students to school on time. When children arrive punctually, they:
Feel calm and prepared
Stay connected to instruction
Build positive social relationships
Develop strong habits that support long-term success
By working together, we can ensure every child starts the day ready to learn, grow, and thrive.
Attendance
We just had 3 weeks off. January is the prime month to have perfect attendance!
Let's do this Eagles!
