Welcome to the 26-27 School Year!

Summit Students and Families,

As summer comes to a close, we are excited to welcome you to Summit for the 2026-27 school year!

This newsletter is full of information to help you and your student get this new school year started. If you have any questions, please consult our school website or contact us by phone or email.

STORM: Our Community Values

At Summit High School, STORM represents the values that guide how we learn, lead, and care for one another. More than a set of expectations, STORM reflects the kind of community we strive to create every day.

S – Supportive: We are present and encouraging in times of struggle and success.

T – Tenacious: We are persistent and continue to move forward in all aspects of life.

O – Original: We value people who express themselves in unique ways. We welcome fresh ideas and imagination

R – Resilient: We are brave, adaptive, strong, ask for help, find our strengths, and recover from difficult situations.

M – Mindful: We are focused, nonjudgemental, and aware of our thoughts, feelings, and surroundings without being reactive.

Living the STORM values is about more than following rules, it's about contributing to a school culture where every student and staff member feels a sense of belonging, purpose, and pride. Together, these values help make Summit High School a place where everyone can learn, grow, and thrive.

SKO STORM!

Dedicated to Each Other - Committed to our Future - THIS IS OUR HOUSE!

All my best,

Donna Baldwin

Principal

PS: Who is Donna Baldwin? Did Summit get a new principal? No, Donna Servignat was married over the summer and took a new last name (much easier to spell and pronounce).

Summit Class Schedules

Our master schedule is a work in progress as changes in student enrollment and staffing often occur throughout the summer. Student schedules are not yet finalized. Schedules will be released to students after 9:00 am on September 3rd. Schedules can be viewed via ParentVUE from a web-browser or phone.

Our school schedule is carefully constructed with the course selection information from forecasting. Students have selected a set of courses, and they will be expected to remain in them. Schedule corrections will be granted only in extenuating circumstances, misplacement, or scheduling error. Scheduling for 1,200 students is very complex. We are not able to meet each student’s personal preferences for period placement or teacher request. The corrections are made only in case of a scheduling error or misplacement of level. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Senior Meetings

School counselors are meeting with seniors the week of August 24th to review their schedules, transcripts, and graduation requirements, and to talk about future plans as we start this important school year. You should have a notification in your StudentVUE / ParentVUE to schedule your meeting with your counselor. Please sign up ASAP if you haven’t done so yet!

School start up dates:

  • Monday, September 7: Holiday–Labor Day

  • Tuesday, September 8: No School - Staff Work Day

9th Grade Orientation

Wednesday, September 9th, is the first day back for all 9th grade students. Student leaders and staff will welcome incoming freshmen, talk about campus expectations, pass out schedules, run through the schedule so students know how to navigate the rotating schedule, and provide opportunities for students to begin to get to know one another. Transportation, breakfast, and lunch will be provided. The day begins at 8:45 and ends at 3:45. This is an orientation for students only.

BLPO Deadline

If your student is taking summer online coursework through Bend LaPine Online, the deadline for completion is Friday, August 21st. Please continue working on your courses to ensure that you can meet this due date. All grades are final and are added to the student transcript.

Athletics

Fall Sports practices begin on August 17th. Be sure that you have all of your registration process completed to be cleared and eligible to begin practice on that day. All athletics communications are conducted through SportsYou. Set up to receive important information from your coach throughout your season. Good luck to all of our fall athletes. If you have questions, reach out to our Athletics office at (541) 355-4101 or email Karen.Caylor@bend.k12.or.us or Quinn.McAndrews@bend.k12.or.us.

School Resources

You can find resources for our bell schedule and Green-Black-Silver rotation schedule on our school website by choosing “School Day Basics” under "About Our School" in the drop down menu.

Please note: Starting in this 2026-27 school year, 9th grade students will no longer be allowed an open rotator. Summit is required to make this change in order to meet district alignment expectations for all comprehensive high schools. Students will be enrolled in a first period course along with a Freshman Foundations class that is designed to meet their .5 graduation credit requirement in "High Education Career Pathways Skills" (HECPS). This credit bearing course is required, does align to graduation requirements, and students should attend regularly.

Preparing for the New School Year

School Supplies

Textbooks, iPads, and basic school supplies will be provided by staff the first few days of school. Families can purchase a basic backpack and personal preference supplies, but you do not need to provide classroom school supplies.

Transportation

If you have a student this year who is eligible for transportation, please log into your ParentVUE account and use the Online Registration tool. Select the "Annual Request for Transportation" tile to walk you through the bus rider registration process. If you need assistance with logging into or trouble shooting your ParentVUE account, please email student-request@bend.k12.or.us. To find out if your student is eligible for transportation, go to bls.fyi/bus. If you have other questions, please email transportation@bend.k12.or.us. And happy riding!

School Photos

Picture Days will occur during the school day on September 17th and 18th.

We could use parent volunteers to help with this event. If you’re interested, please email Karen Young (karen.young@bend.k12.or.us).

Optional Fees/Payment

Pay optional fees or remit payment for any outstanding fines online through the district TouchBase payment system. Most items you'll need to purchase for your student will be done via TouchBase. Be sure to follow the instructions for logging into your student's account.

Summit School-Wide Expectations

Our Summit Student Handbook is available online along with the Bend LaPine School Student Code of Conduct. We will review these important expectations with students through advisory in the first few weeks of school. It is important for students and families to know their rights and responsibilities. Please take some time to review these with your student.

Some important highlights

Parking Permits: Parking permits are available to Juniors and Seniors only, and are required beginning Oct. 1st. Students may pick up a Parking Permit Application in the Main Office starting on Friday, Sept. 18th. E-Bikes must be registered and display a parking sticker to be parked on campus.

CANVAS: Access to classroom materials will provided on Canvas, and we STRONGLY recommend that parents take a moment to become Canvas Observers. This will give you access to classroom calendars, due dates, assignment details, teacher notes, and more.

Open Campus Lunch: We have an open campus during lunch. Students in grades 10-12 are allowed to leave campus to access local restaurants or go home during lunch. Freshmen are required to remain on campus during lunch throughout first semester. Campus will be open for freshman 2nd semester based on attendance, grades and behavior.

Open Rotator: Our school functions on a rotating schedule (Green/Black/Silver). One of these 3 days, students in grades 10-12 will have an open rotator during 1st period. Students are welcome to come to campus during their open rotator, but once they arrive to school, they must remain on campus. They can study in the library, in the school commons, or access the Lightening Lounge study supports. Attendance is not taken for their open rotator. They are allowed to arrive for their 10:00 (or 9:45 on Wednesdays) class if they prefer to remain off campus during that time frame.

School to Home Communications

We will be using Parent Square to communicate with families. Our athletics office and coaches will use SportsYou to communicate with families. Please sign up for notifications to stay informed. We send daily announcements each night before the following school day along with a monthly school newsletter. Be sure to check these updates regularly to stay informed on events, announcements, special schedules, etc.

Need to Report a Concern?

Anyone may report a bias incident, safety concern, or general complaint using the QR code on the posters around campus or by using this link.

Absence Reporting - SHS Attendance Policies and Procedures

Students who attend school regularly are more likely to have success in school, graduate on time, and positively reflect on their high school experience. Please reference the attendance procedure section from the Code of Conduct for disciplinary actions regarding unexcused absences.

  • To report an absence, contact our 24-hour attendance line at (541) 355-4015.

  • You can also report an absence via email at summit-attendance@bend.k12.or.us

  • If your child needs to leave campus for an appointment, we ask that families call at least 60 minutes prior to departure time.

  • Parents have 48 hours to clear an unexcused absence with the attendance office.

  • Students who leave campus during the school day are required to check out with the attendance office.

  • Students returning to campus during the school day are required to check in with the attendance office.

  • If your student will be absent for an extended time, please notify the attendance office in advance so we can provide support.

  • Families are encouraged to schedule vacation/appointments outside of instructional time.

  • If you excuse your student from a class, our expectation is that they will be leaving campus under your permission and supervision. Students may NOT be excused by a parent/guardian to stay on campus to do an alternate activity.

  • Codes: AEx (Absence Excused), AUx (Absence Unexcused), LEx (Late Excused), LUn (Late Unexcused), L10 (Late-over 10 min.), AUv (Absence Unverified) - Typically these codes are correct. If there is any question regarding attendance, students may check in with the teacher. If there are additional concerns, please reach out to the attendance office.

The table pictured here describes some common examples of excused and unexcused absences.

Attendance Related to Athletics and School-Sponsored Activities

In order to participate in practice, contests, or after-school activities, students are required to attend classes for the full day. Failure to do so will result in forfeiture of the following competition if the absence is not cleared. Medical appointments on competition days are exempt.

Contacting Students During the School Day

If a parent or guardian needs to contact their student, please call the attendance office at (541) 355-4015. Students are expected to keep their phones off and away from 8:45-3:45 pm. If your student isn't feeling well - they should let their teacher know and head to the nurse's office. The nurse will support your student in contacting you if they need to be picked up or released from school.

Need to drop something off for your student?
Stop at the attendance office to drop off any items that your student may have accidentally left at home.
