"Kind" monitor named as Kids First recipient for June
Hahn Intermediate lunch monitor Ms. Savannah Rowe has been named as the June recipient of the Kids First award.
Each month, administrators nominate a DCS employee or contracted staff member who best exemplifies what it means to be “Kids First.” Winners receive a $100 Visa gift card thanks to Mark Owen, owner of MEEMIC insurance agencies in Davison and Flint Township, and a certificate. The winner is chosen at random.
Savannah was nominated by Hahn Intermediate Dean of Students Mrs. Amy Renye, who wrote:
"We are delighted to nominate Savannah Rowe for the Kids First Award. As a monitor at Hahn Intermediate, Savannah exemplifies the qualities of an outstanding and dedicated staff member. Her commitment to the well-being and development of our students and the school environment makes her deserving of this recognition.
Savannah is known for her punctuality and reliability. She consistently arrives on time and is always prepared to take on her responsibilities with enthusiasm and diligence. Her dependable nature ensures that the school operates smoothly and that students are supervised and supported at all times.
One of Savannah’s remarkable qualities is her kindness. She has a unique ability to connect with students, making each child feel valued and understood. Her warm demeanor and genuine interest in their lives foster a positive school atmosphere.
Savannah goes out of her way to ensure that every student feels welcome and cared for, often going the extra mile to offer a listening ear or a word of encouragement. In addition, she never misses out on an opportunity to participate in spirit week. She goes above and beyond, which the students look forward to and appreciate.
Ashley, a 5th grade student says, “Miss Savannah is kind. She is actually the kindest person I know. A few times this year she has even given me little gifts. I really like to hang out near her during recess and draw pictures while she works. I like spending time with her because she is someone I can talk to.”
Cali, another 5th grade student says, “Miss Savannah is kind, caring and nice. She also has integrity because she never talks about anyone else. I really like that about her.”
Additionally, Savannah takes great pride in the appearance and cleanliness of our school. She actively helps to maintain the area surrounding the school, ensuring that it is a safe and pleasant environment for everyone. Her efforts to keep the school looking good not only enhances the physical environment but also instills a sense of pride and responsibility in the students.
In addition to her duties as a monitor, Savannah plays a significant role in our school community. She assists in monitoring students in the gym, ensuring their safety and promoting positive interactions between classmates.
Savannah runs the Hahn Walking Club, encouraging students to stay active and engage in physical exercise and helps to maintain and organize recess equipment for the hundreds of kids that use it each day.
Savannah’s contributions to our school are invaluable. Her dedication, kindness, willingness to lend a helping hand and her proactive approach to maintaining a positive school environment make her an ideal candidate for the Kids First Award.

Longtime volunteer selected for June Cardinal Spirit Award
Individuals can be nominated by any DCS staff member. Once a month, the building principal can submit one name for that month's drawing. This month, we are pleased to announce our winner for June. James Lockrey, who has volunteered at Central and Thomson elementary buildings for 17 years, was nominated by Thomson Elementary Principal Andrew Criswell, who wrote:
"We are thrilled to announce that Jim Lockrey has been awarded the prestigious Cardinal Spirit Award for his outstanding volunteer work at Thomson Elementary. Jim’s dedication and unwavering commitment to our school community have made a significant impact on both students and staff alike.
Jim began his volunteering journey 17 years ago at Central, where he worked with first grade students. He would help the first graders with their sight words, counting coins, or whatever they needed extra assistance with. When his daughter, Wendy Lockrey, moved to Thomson in 2008, Jim transitioned with her and has been with us ever since.
Jim's contributions have been invaluable, especially in our STEM class. He is here almost every week, bringing his expertise and enthusiasm to engage students in hands-on science, technology, engineering, and math activities. His dedication to fostering a love for STEM subjects has inspired many young minds and significantly enhanced our program. Additionally, Jim helps run STEM stations, tie shoes, offer support when needed, and assist with anything else that arises. His willingness to help in any capacity makes him an indispensable part of our school community.
Jim embodies the true spirit of the Cardinal Spirit Award through his selfless service and dedication. The only time he ever missed volunteering was during the COVID pandemic when there were no volunteers allowed at school. As soon as the restrictions were lifted, Jim was eager to return and continue his work. Despite his humility and insistence that he doesn’t volunteer for recognition, we are thrilled that he is receiving this well-deserved award. Jim often expresses his admiration for the amazing staff and students at Thomson, wishing that every staff member could receive an award for their dedication.
We are incredibly grateful for all that Jim has done and continues to do for Thomson Elementary. Congratulations, Jim, on this well-deserved recognition, and thank you for your extraordinary contributions!"

Board approves second reading on updated policies
The second and final reading for several board policies were approved at the June Board of Education meeting. The full Board approved the first reading of the policies at the May 6, 2024, meeting. Some of the changes were proposed by NEOLA, hired by the District in 2014, to review Board of Education policies, while others were addressed in house.
The policies include:
- 5111 Eligibility of Resident/Nonresident Students
This clarifies steps the District will take if enrollment is found to be fraudulent and has to determine whether or not a student is living in the district. - 2221 Mandatory Courses/Graduation Requirements
Earlier this year the state Legislature passed a law requiring students beginning with the Class of 2028 to pass a half credit course in personal finance in order to graduate. Rather than waiting to update this policy in the fall, the District decided to update it now. - 5460 Graduation Requirements
This updates the policy to reflect the required personal finance credit as mentioned above. - 9130 Public Complaints
This solidifies a process for parents and students to follow when requesting to review instructional materials. - 1240 Evaluation of the Superintendent
Changes in this policy clarify the dates used in the process of evaluating the superintendent. - 2418 Sex Education
This is a recommended change by NEOLA, which basically adds that if the district teaches sex education, the classes offered have to be age appropriate. - 3220 Professional Staff Evaluation
A one-word grammatical change is the reason for this policy update. - 6320 Purchasing
A number of grammatical changes prompted this update as well as reference to new Policy 6350 that refers to prevailing wage for new construction. - 6321 New School Construction, Renovation
Updated for grammatical corrections. - 6325 Procurement - Federal Grants/Funds
Again, a number of updates dealing with grammatical corrections. - 6350 Prevailing Wage
This is a new policy to reflect the change in law in March 2024, which requires prevailing wages must be used by the contractor for any new construction projects. - 6520 Payroll Deductions
Updated for grammatical corrections. - 8390 Animals on District Property
Updated to reflect a technical correction. - 8800 Religious/Patriotic Ceremonies and Observances
Updated to address modifications made by the US Supreme Court in regard to employees and religious activity.
Board votes to continue MASB memberships
Board members unanimously approved renewing membership in the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) and the MASB Legal Trust Fund for another year. For the 2024/2025 school year, the fee for these associations is $9,363.00 for school district membership. Membership in both groups is voluntary. The legal trust fund entitles member school districts to possible financial assistance if they become involved in a legal issue which has significant ramifications for school districts in general.
Superintendent receives highest marks on evaluation
In his first year in the role of superintendent, Matt Lobban has earned the highest ranking of "Highly Effective" based on results from his performance evaluation held in May. Based on that ranking, Board members approved extending Supt. Lobban's contract an additional year. His contract now runs through June 30, 2029.
Board member evaluated Supt. Lobban in the following areas: Visionary Leadership, Policy and Governance, Instructional Leadership, Communication and Community Relations, Organizational Management, Professionalism and Ethics and Goal Attainment as well as overall student growth and assessment.
"As I said in my evaluation, it is truly an honor to be the superintendent of Davison Community Schools," said Supt. Lobban. "And it is an honor that I do not take lightly."
