Message from the Principal
Happy Monday Kellogg Community.
We started Oregon State Testing last week with our students completing the science assessment in their science class. This week we are on a special schedule for the English Language Arts and Math assessments. When students arrive to school they report to their first period class for a 76 minute testing period, followed by a quick 4 minute break. We then jump into our regularly scheduled classes. The special schedule will last all week. Students who do not complete assessments this week will be pulled next week to complete testing. State testing requires student compliance with strict state requirements. Any misconduct in the testing environment will result in a call home. It is very important students comply with teacher instructions to ensure a compliant testing environment for all of our students. Achievement matters!
You can help your student do well on the assessment by helping ensure they have a good meal at dinner, get to bed early, wake up at their normal time and have a good breakfast.
Just a quick reminder that we are planning our end of year special celebrations and functions. May 18th we will have our Rising 6th Grade Family Night here at Kellogg from 5:30-7:30 pm. Our Multicultural Fair evening is May 27th from 6:00-7:30 pm. We welcome all families to this event. The Multicultural Fair information can be found below. We will have our final pep assembly and club day on May 29th during the school day. Promotion and the annual Oaks Park field trip for our 8th graders will be on June 4th.
Requirements to be eligible for the Oaks Park field trip were sent in an earlier communication. It is important that students be consistently reminded that the following two criteria were sent home and communicated to families by Parent Square last week:
- students who earn a level 2 or 3 referral between May 11 and June 2nd, and or
- students who earn more than 2 tardies per day (average) between May 11 and June 2nd,
- will be ineligible to attend the Oaks Park field trip.
Eighth grade promotion will take place on June 4th here in the Kellogg gymnasium from 5:30-7:00 pm. We will begin our special program at 5:30 pm and then conclude for light refreshments and some photo opportunities in our cafe at 6:30 pm. More information will be coming out soon.
We are in the planning process for 6th and 7th grade field day on June 4th. We should have more information on this fun day to close out the current school year within the next week
As I shared in the last couple of newsletters, we are working with students to ensure they get to class on time. We have had much better results with our intense focus on student timelines. Our year to date attendance has remained steady at about 90%, and our attendance for the prior five rose to about 90%. We have about 67% of our students achieving good to acceptable attendance and about 22% of our students experiencing chronic absenteeism. Our School Improvement Goal for good to acceptable attendance is 68%, we are cutting it close but we remain hopeful we can hit that target.
As we look forward through this week we have included some news and resources. In this edition of the Kellogg Community News, please find the following big topics:

Book Fair
Closing out the year with a Buy One Get One Book, Book Fair with Scholastic!!
When: May 26-27 and June 1-3
Where: Kellogg Library
Time: 9:15-4:10 and 5:30-7:00 on 5/27 Multicultural Evening
Go to the link below to view our book fair webpage and for info to create an ewallet for your students:
Final Due Date for Library books is Friday May 22nd
All library books need to be turned in by May 22, or paid through SchoolPay on the school website.
The automated system turns outstanding items into fines automatically if the book is overdue at the end-of-year. So if you receive an email notification on May 26, books that were not returned by May 22 will show up as a fine (replacement cost for that book). However, you can still return your book and the “fine” will disappear! You may return any books thru the last day of school. May 20 is the last day for student checkout.
So please do not be confused. We’d much rather have our library book instead of payment! Even if the book is late, just return the library book.
Not sure if you have books checked-out or overdue? Want to find out if you have fines for books from previous years? Students, come to the library and check your account. I am here to help, so let’s talk it out.
~ Ms. Nowak, Your Teacher-Librarian

Kellogg Staff & PTSA are excited to announce the 8th grade end of the year Oaks Park Trip!
When / Cuando
Thursday June 4, 8th graders will take school buses from Kellogg to Oaks Park where they will enjoy a day of fun with their friends. Students will leave Kellogg around 9:30 AM and return around 3:00 PM.
Cost / Costo: $25
We have secured the spot at Oaks Park, but we still need to raise funds to pay for the buses and ride bracelets for the students. That comes out to $25 per student. Scan the QR code to the right or go to https://www.schoolpay.com/link/kelloggoakspark.
Don’t have $25? Pay what you can, and/or email alcruz@pps.net! Have more than $25? Pay extra to help offset others! Feel free to share this link with family and friends interested in helping to create a memorable experience for your 8th grader.
¿No tienes $25?
Please note that this field trip is a privilege and is intended to recognize students who have consistently demonstrated positive behavior and engagement. While we hope to include as many students as possible, not all students may qualify.
As part of our expectations leading up to the trip, any student who receives a Stage 2 or 3 referral starting on Monday, May 11th will not be eligible to attend. Additionally, chronic tardies will result in a student not attending the field trip. This means that between May 11th and June 2nd, students who average 2 or more tardies per day will not be able to attend the field trip. Our mission at Kellogg is for our 8th graders to leave for high school prepared for success. Tardies cause students to miss key instruction and are disruptive to the learning environment of others.
We appreciate your support in helping us encourage positive choices and accountability as we approach the end of the school year!
Multicultural Fair
Volunteers Needed
If you would like to volunteer at the Multicultural Fair, please complete this form! We could use help anytime between 4:30-8:00pm with various duties such as set up, tear down, greeting, ushering, general supervision, and staging. Your help is so appreciated!
Multicultural Fair
We are excited to announce the launch of what we hope will become an annual Kellogg Community Multicultural Fair, taking place May 27 at 6pm. This event is designed to bring together students, families, community members, and local partners for an evening of cultural celebration and connection.
The Multicultural Fair will be a culminating community event where our school community gathers under one roof to share and celebrate the many cultures represented at Kellogg. The evening will include community partners sharing information about summer and fall opportunities for students and families, cultural affinity groups in our cafeteria sharing food, games, and artifacts; performances on our stage; and displays throughout the building where students and community members can share reflections on “What culture means to me.”
We would love for members of our community to participate in one or more of the following ways:
- Host a cultural table in the cafeteria, which might include sharing traditional food, games, artifacts, or stories with visitors.
- Share a performance such as dance, music, storytelling, or a short cultural presentation.
- Contribute food to our free community banquet featuring small, bite-sized cultural dishes to share.
This event will fill our building with community members who come together to celebrate culture, music, dance, food, and fellowship during this special two-hour gathering.
If you are interested in participating in this community-centered event, please see this link for more information on how to get involved. If you would like to attend, please see the flyer below for more information. We look forward to celebrating and sharing this space with you.
The ROAR Store
The ROAR Store has moved to its new location with new and improved items and lots of student excitement. The store is managed by Student Council. Please encourage your student to ask for ROAR tickets (our currency). Students earn ROAR tickets by upholding our ROAR values here at Kellogg. Our ROAR values are all about getting our students to operate in a respectful way, by being open-minded, by being their authentic self and by being a responsible citizen.
The Store is open Wednesday and Friday during lunch times with new and improved items for students to select from, including big ticket items that are more about an experience than a trinket they can lose. We are excited to get students reactions to the new items available at our new grand opening.
We have a new ticket item in the store. Students can purchase Scholastic dollars with ROAR Tickets! Our amazing Librarian has shared with our Student Council an awesome opportunity for students to purchase 15-Scholastic Dollars for 15-ROAR Tickets! Our Scholastic Book fair is coming in late May and student can purchase currency to get books and other items at the book fair!

School Traffic Circulation Map (Reminder)
The safety of our students and staff are our first priority! If a school official is directing traffic, please pay close attention to their instructions. Parents should not enter into the school parking lot from 9:00-9:20 am and from 3:45-4:10. Thank you for your attention to safety on our campus.
The Kellogg School traffic circulation maps outline the planned flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic around our campus during drop-off, pick-up, and other times when school-related traffic is high. The map is designed to help parents, students, school staff, and drivers understand the most efficient and safe routes for entering, exiting, and navigating within the school premises.
Our circulation maps also include nearby Park and Walk locations. These are sites near the school where families can park or students can be dropped off and walk the remainder of the distance to the school site, reducing car traffic in front of the school and allowing you to skip waiting in the drop-off line while students start the day with healthy physical activity, arriving at school more ready to learn. Some Park and Walk locations are at nearby parks, while others encourage families to use on-street parking within the school neighborhood.
Please utilize Park and Walk locations and avoid dropping off and picking up students at the front of the school along 69th Avenue or in the parking lot.

Grades and ParentVue
If you are uncertain about how to check on your student's grades, missing work and or class work progress, here is a quick how to resource that might be able to help.
Safe Oregon
We are grateful that the PPS school community is using the SafeOregon tip line to report incidents that affect students' well-being and ability to learn in a safe environment. Just last year, there were over 300 tips that were submitted anonymously. We are responsible for keeping SafeOregon's contact information for our buildings accurate at all times so that school leaders can be alerted promptly. Please remember to reach out to Andrew Gerlach (agerlach@pps.net) whenever there is a staffing change to building leadership. Please save the SafeOregon number in your phone: 844-472-3367 This will allow you to identify their number when they need to call you if an urgent tip has been submitted in connection to your school.

Schoolwide Expectations
At Kellogg we are proud of our schoolwide expectations as they provide our students with safe, structured, and productive learning environments. Please take the time to review some of our expectations below.
Cell Phones and Technology Devices
Cell phones and all personal technologies (e.g. apple watches, gaming devices, wireless headphones, Bluetooth speakers, etc.) are expected to be off and away during the school day. Students are expected to keep cell phones and technology devices turned off and put away in their lockers. Personal technologies and cell phones should not be on student's person in the hallways, restrooms, and at lunch recess. If a student is spotted with a cell phone or technology device, it will be immediately confiscated and taken to the front office. Students with repeated cell phone or technology violations to this expectation will be placed on individualized cell phone and technology plan.
Bags and Backpacks
In alignment with many other middle schools in the District, all bags and backpacks must be stored in lockers during the school day. Backpacks clutter classroom spaces and items are frequently lost or stolen unless they are stored safely in a locker. Students will use their binders to carry their learning materials throughout the school day.
Learning Logs
To help students stay organized and keep track of important dates and deadlines, students will be issued a Learning Log. Be sure to check your student's Learning Log regularly to stay up-to-date with your student's assignments, tests, and other announcements. Learnings Logs will also serve as the student's hall pass when students leave the classroom during non-transition times. It is critical that students do not lose their Learning Log.
Toys and Valuable Items
Students should leave all toys, valuable items, and any item that can cause safety concerns or distractions at home. Leaving these items at home will ensure items are not lost or stolen.
Closed Campus
Kellogg is a closed campus. All visitors must check-in at the front office. Students must be signed out and picked up by a parent or guardian with ID before 3:45 in order to leave campus before dismissal time. Additionally, our school will not accept DoorDash, Uber Eats, or other deliveries to students. Parents and guardians are welcome to drop off lunch items for their students at any time.
Key Contacts
Below are the counselors and administrators supporting each grade level.
Student safety, student well-being, and student learning is our top priority. If you ever need to speak to a teacher, counselor, administrator, or any staff member, please call the front office or e-mail the individual directly to schedule a meeting. Unannounced meetings are often difficult to accommodate as school staff have busy and tight schedules. In particular, before school, after school, and lunch times are the busiest times in schools as most staff members are on duty to ensure student safety. Thank you for your support and understanding!
