Mr. Mauck's Musings
We have the first full week in the books. The students have done a nice job of settling into a good routine. They have a positive energy and are working hard. Congratulations to Stephanie Martinez and Mr. Evan Elrod on their selection as the student and staff of the week winners. I wanted to give a shout out to the student sections at our athletic contests. They have shown up, been loud, and positive for our team. I am excited to see how many students come out to support the football team in our home opener tonight.
Parent Night and Fees
The JHS Student Academic Services department will have parent information meetings on August 26 to discuss grade-level-specific topics. Parents of 9th and 10th graders will meet in the auditorium at 6pm and parents of 11th and 12th graders will meet at 7pm. These meetings are a great opportunity to experience the opportunities available to our students as well as graduation requirements. Parents, your students will be bringing home a school fee invoice for this school year. While the State of Indiana provides some resources for textbooks, school devices and some curricular materials, there will still be fees associated with certain elective courses. Examples of some classes with fees are lab classes like our culinary, manufacturing, or construction classes. Students taking more than 2 AP courses will have the third, fourth of fifth AP test fee added to their invoice. The State of Indiana is covering up to 2 AP tests per year for students. We also have a $5.50 fee for student handbooks and a $30 activity fee. The activity fee goes to multiple student activities not just athletics or dances. Payment may be made by cash or check and sent to the school or parents may choose an online option using their My School Bucks account. There will be a processing fee for online payments. If you have not contributed to the JHS PTO there is still time. Please consider joining for $25 per family and support Post Prom and ensure you student is eligible for the PTO scholarship.
Robotics, App Contest and Community Events
The JHS Thundercats robotics team had a successful student club call out, but we are in need of adult sponsors. If you have an interest in robotics this is an outstanding way to contribute to the school. Please check out the information below and contact Nathaniel James if you are interested.
Prior to the end of school in May, we were sent out information about the Congressional App Challenge. Congressman Mark Messmer is pleased to be a part of the 2026 App Challenge, and we just wanted to send a reminder again to any students or teacher who may be interested in participating. Attached is a flier with information and you can find more specifics at www.congressionalappchallenge.us. The deadline to submit the app created is October 26.
Student Activities
All this week we held club callout during our CCD class. Students in each grade level gathered in the cafeteria to explore all of the options we currently offer. Please encourage your students to get involved in one of our many activities to accentuate their JHS experience. Congratulations to our newly elected Freshman class officers. This week we elected Freshman CCD representatives to the student council. The Little Wildcats had a Hawaiian Day on Wednesday and next week is Bow Tie Day. Our athletic teams are on a hot streak with multiple SIAC victories this week. We are cheering our football team this evening as they battle with the number 1 ranked Evansville Memorial Tigers at home on Joe Rohleder Field. Saturday, boys' tennis is at Jeffersonville, and the girls' soccer team is at Reitz, but the girls' golf team is hosting the Tony Blessinger Memorial Invite at 10 am. On Saturday the Marching Wildcats start their competition season with a pre-season showcase at JHS.

BOOK BANTER
The library is off to a great start with many classes checking out beginning of the year books! We hope you stop by soon
This month’s book of the month is The Distance Between Us by Reyna Granda.
“Grande's memoir, The Distance Between Us, is a novel about the true and raw difficulties that migrants face when going to a new country without being able to understand the language. It is described as a coming-of-age story about her life before and after coming to the U.S. as an undocumented child immigrant. In an interview published by the Los Angeles Review of Books on 6 December 2012, Grande explained why she decided to part from fiction to tell her story:
'Even though my novels are very personal, and the material I write about is drawn from my own experience, they are fictional stories. After I completed my second novel, I wanted to write the real story about my life, before and after illegally immigrating to the US from Mexico. I wanted to shed light on the complexities of immigration and how immigration affected my entire family in both positive and negative ways.'” (wikipedia)
The drawing for September is to write the title of your book and its geographical location on a sticky note and put it on the map. Then submit your name on a slip of paper for the drawing.
There are new books everywhere in the library. Have a look around!
As a reminder, the library is closed during the CCD time on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Also you must bring a teacher pass anytime you want or need to use the library, no matter the reason.
Happy Reading!!
