The Rhythm of Learning: How Montessori Shaped Makayla's Musical Journey The Rhythm of Learning: How Montessori Shaped Makayla's Musical Journey

The Foundation of a Creative Mindset

From an early age, Makayla displayed a passion for performance. She recalls watching childhood videos of herself at age three, already eager to take the stage. At Ridgeline Montessori, this creative spark was nurtured through the school’s emphasis on independence, collaboration, and individual expression.

“Ridgeline really encouraged creativity and resourcefulness,” Makayla reflects. “We were always encouraged to push boundaries and to express ourselves fully and honestly in our work.”

This encouragement came in many forms, from group projects that developed her communication skills to a classroom environment designed for student-led learning. Makayla fondly remembers the teachers who played a pivotal role in her educational journey. “Eric [Bear] was my instructor in 1st-3rd grade, and I'll never forget how silly and engaging he was with us. Adrienne [Mills] was the assistant teacher when I was in 4th-6th grade, and she always made me feel supported and seen. We actually reconnected a few years back for coffee, which was truly special. Lastly, Jennifer Wyld was amazing for all of the reasons—an incredible educator and an even better human.”

She continues, “I was supported as an individual and told time and time again that my work, ideas, and voice were meaningful and valued in the world. The confidence to ask questions and to push boundaries was instilled in me throughout my eight years at Ridgeline, and these are qualities I utilize every single day in my professional, personal, and creative life.”

A Musical Beginning

One of the pivotal experiences Makayla recalls from her time at Ridgeline was participating in the school choir and theater productions. Her first connection to performance came through a play called Geology Rocks, where she played a Valley girl. This experience allowed her to see the joy of embodying a character and telling a story through performance—an early glimpse into her future career.

Although Ridgeline’s music program has since been discontinued, Makayla’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the impact music education can have on a child’s life. “That’s really where I got my start in singing,” she shares. “And now, it’s something I do professionally.”

From Student to Artist

Since graduating from Ridgeline, Makayla attended Oak Hill School for high school and then pursued a career in music. She enrolled at ICON Collective College of Music in Los Angeles, where she graduated with a certification in music production in 2018.

After graduating, she worked at ICON Collective for three and a half years as a studio coordinator and marketing coordinator, all while creating her own music and DJing in clubs around Los Angeles. In 2022, she transitioned into artist management, joining NAYMLIS INC., where she currently works with a team managing over 30 music artists worldwide. Her work includes music releases, tour routing and support, sync and licensing, marketing, and more.

Her career highlights include performing at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheater, launching a house music project, touring across the country, and securing a major music licensing deal with Apple. But even with these achievements, collaboration remains at the heart of her work.

“One of my favorite things about working in music is that it’s one of the world’s greatest connectors,” she explains. “It allows us to tell honest stories and evoke emotions in ways words alone can’t.”

She credits Ridgeline’s Montessori model for shaping her worldview—one that values creativity, peace, and a sense of responsibility toward others. “We were taught to solve for peace, to consider others, and to think of ourselves as global citizens. At the same time, our individual gardens were watered. We were supported to be the best we could be so that we could show up for the world around us.”

Advice for Future Generations

When asked what advice she would give to current Ridgeline students, Makayla offers words of encouragement:

“Be a student of life. Stay curious, and don’t be afraid to dream. Through decision, persistence, and passion, anything is possible.”

Her story is an example of how a Montessori education fosters lifelong learners who are adaptable, creative, and driven to make an impact. As she continues her career in music and artist management, she remains passionate about building on the foundation she has built and passing her knowledge along.

Makayla’s journey reflects the lasting impact of Ridgeline Montessori—a place where students are nurtured, their voices are valued, and they gain the confidence to follow their passions and make a meaningful mark on the world.
