if you don't have a conference time! if you don't have a conference time!

Talk to your child in advance. Talk to your child in advance.

Having your child’s input will guide you on what to talk about with their teachers. It also empowers them to take an active role in voicing their opinions and shaping their own learning experiences.

Ask your child:

  1. How do you think you are doing in school?
  2. What's your favorite part of the school day?
  3. Do you feel supported by your teachers and other school staff members?
  4. Is there is anything that you would want me to discuss with your teacher?
  5. (For older students) What do you want to continue learning and pursue as a career?

Think of questions to ask your child’s teachers. Think of questions to ask your child’s teachers.

It's recommended to prepare some questions to ask teachers before your conference. What are the most important details about your child's time at school? For some, it might be about the curriculum and student performance. For others, it might be about the social experience - behavior, listening skills, focus, and making friends. Whatever your concerns are, here are some sample questions to help get you started:

  1. What is my child doing well at?
  2. What could they improve upon?
  3. If my child is struggling, what additional programs or services may be available to help them?
  4. How does my child get along with classmates and school staff?
  5. Does my child participate in class discussion and group activities?
  6. What can I do at home to support my child and you (the teacher)?
  7. What is my child’s routine/schedule at school?
  8. Are there extracurriculars available?
