A tale of two Blakes

Hill Elementary kindergarten student Blake Smith got a surprise visit when Blake Smith, a defenseman for the Flint Firebirds hockey team, visited his classroom recently as a mystery reader.

Blake, the hockey player, read "The Three Little Canadian Pigs" and answered questions from Blake's, the kindergartener, classmates in Mrs. Anna Eastridge's classroom.

The interaction was covered by media outlets ABC12 and the Davison Index, which published the story that can be read by clicking on this link: https://davisonindex.mihomepaper.com/articles/two-blakes-one-unbreakable-bond/

Special "theme" days planned for Neurodiversity Week April 14-18

Davison Community Schools is celebrating Neurodiversity Week April 14-18.

“Neurodiversity” is a word used to explain the unique ways people's brains work. While everyone's brain develops similarly, no two brains function just alike. Being neurodivergent means having a brain that works differently from the average or “neurotypical” person.

It is estimated that between 15 and 20 percent of the population in the United States is neurodivergent.

Neurodiversity Week may be the latest effort to bring attention to students with autism, ADHD and other differences in brain development, but it certainly isn't the district's first - or last - endeavor in recognizing and celebrating brain differences. We will share more about those programs in next week's Chirp Sheet.

DHS students participate in Math Field Day

Davison High School Teacher Mr. James Wilcox recently accompanied five students who were hand-selected by the upper-level mathematics department teachers to compete against 20 other schools in the 56th Annual "Math Field Day" at the University of Michigan-Flint. The students included:

  • Quinn McCrocklin
  • Nathaniel Tober
  • Peyton Smuzeski
  • Laney Wolschleger
  • Ben Lange

"Unbeknownst to me, this was Davison's 30th year participating - so props to Mrs. Tammy Heavner for taking Davison 29 times up until COVID, so they awarded Davison with a plaque," Mr. Wilcox said.

The students competed in various math events, such as Chalk Talk (Tober), Leap Frog (Smuzeski/Wolschleger), Mad Hatter A&B (McCrocklin/Lange), Team Essay, Team Huddle and Team Relays. Awards were given to the top two places in each event, and Ben Lange won the Gold Medal in Mad Hatter B!

Congrats to Ben and the rest of the competitors for representing Davison well!

Kathryn Kellogg named as District’s next Special Education Coordinator

Speech-language pathologist Kathryn Kellogg will assume the duties of the District’s Special Education Coordinator beginning July 1. Kathryn is replacing Charlotte Dotson, who is retiring at the end of the school year.

The Special Education Coordinator facilitates the meetings and paperwork for Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), completes Reviews of Existing Evaluation Data (REED) to make decisions about a student's eligibility for special education services, keeps a list of 1:1/enhanced staffing for students, assists staff with questions regarding IEPs, Amendments and REEDs and assists with implementing support for Secondary Transition Programs.

“I am excited about this position because it provides the opportunity to collaborate with a variety of staff and work with families across the district,” said Kathryn, who joined the DCS family three years ago. She previously worked as a speech-language pathologist at Grand Blanc Community Schools for 16 years.

For the past year, Kathryn has also taught the High School Cardinal LINKS program.

“Kathryn is a dynamic professional and colleague who has the exceptional gift of being able to empathetically and authentically express sensitive information to both staff and parents,” said Dana Melaragni, Special Education Director at DCS. “She also has a high level of professional curiosity that is needed to solve complex issues while exemplifying the district's overall vision of being a place where kids come first."

Kathryn completed her undergraduate work, teaching certificate and graduate degree in speech-language pathology from Michigan State University.

Kathryn and her husband, David, will be celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary this year. They have two children: Grace, 19, is a Davison Early College student who will be attending Michigan Tech this fall and Warren, 16, is a junior at Davison High School who will be the marching band’s senior drum major next school year.

In her free time, Kathryn enjoys spending time with her family playing board games, watching movies, traveling when she can, hiking and biking.
