More Than Pretty Pictures

Mr. Jameson’s Art Foundations Drawing class isn’t just drawing pretty pictures, but a comprehensive and challenging course that is structured to teach kids how to draw; at times literally keeping students on their toes. To switch up complacency in long hours sitting and rendering objects and perspectives, Mr. Jameson throws students into what have been referred to as the dreaded ‘Time-Trials.’ Students must render whatever the chosen object is in front of them as fast as possible counting down from several minutes to mere seconds. “The kids are thrust into drawing immediately with this course, from how to hold a pencil properly, to seeing basic shapes or geometry in everyday objects, all while introducing them to new techniques in graphite and charcoal. To engage the other areas of the brain I have them stand and draw with pencils attached to three-foot sticks with fast paced music blaring all under a stopwatch. These limitations force them to problem solve to achieve the result using their ingenuity rather than skill or natural talent.”

This push and pull of student’s problem solving is the spear head of Mr. Jameson’s teaching: “I constantly remind my students that I will never be their best art teacher, only failure and critical thinking will.”

Day of the Dead Celebration in Spanish Class

The Day of the Dead, traditionally celebrated on November 1 and 2, is a meaningful holiday that honors loved ones who have passed away. In Mrs. Hatcher’s middle school Spanish classes, students marked the occasion by creating alebrijes and sugar skulls to decorate a class ofrenda (traditional altar). They also designed individual shoebox altars dedicated to their own loved ones, some even including cherished pets, beautifully capturing the spirit of remembrance and celebration central to this tradition.

You Spoke, We Listened: Dining Hall Upgrades Underway

Over the past several weeks, we’ve been gathering valuable feedback about GWA’s dining experience through both surveys and focus groups. Last month, we conducted separate parent and student surveys, receiving an impressive 312 total responses. Building on that feedback, we recently hosted Food Service Focus Groups with nearly 30 parents and 12 students per division, in collaboration with school leadership and our current food service partner, FLIK Independent School Dining.

Several themes emerged from the data, including the need to reduce wait times, improve food quality, and be more intentional with menu creation and options. In response, we’ve already taken immediate action by adding five new microwaves to the dining hall, bringing the total to eight. This enhancement will help shorten lines and make lunchtime more efficient and enjoyable for students.

We are grateful to everyone who participated and shared their insights. Your feedback continues to guide our collaboration with FLIK and the school leadership team as we work to implement additional improvements in the weeks ahead. Be on the lookout for further updates as we continue making positive changes and enhancements to our dining services.
