SD Met Takes First Place in Voter Registration Challenge! 🗳️

SD Met has done it again! Our school repeated its first-place victory in the annual Shirley Weber Voter Registration Challenge, demonstrating our students’ commitment to civic engagement and making their voices heard. Four dedicated student leaders, alongside Ms. Doyle, worked hard to encourage their peers to participate, successfully reaching an impressive 91% of our eligible 16-, 17-, and 18-year-old students to register or pre-register to vote!

The achievement was celebrated at a special award ceremony held at City Hall, recognizing the school’s outstanding efforts to empower young people and promote civic responsibility. Congratulations to our student leaders and Ms. Doyle for their dedication to helping students understand the importance of participating in our democracy. We are proud to see our students leading the way and making a difference in our community!

A Memorable Day at the Theatre! 🎭

Nine lucky students had the exciting opportunity to attend a student matinee of the brand-new musical Begin Again at The Old Globe Theatre! Sponsored by our Theatre Club, this special outing gave students the chance to experience the magic of live theatre and enjoy an exciting new production. The show was fantastic, making it a memorable experience for everyone who attended!

Opportunities like these allow our students to explore the performing arts, discover new creative interests, and build a deeper appreciation for theatre. A big thank-you to our Theatre Club for making this wonderful experience possible!

ASB Fundraising Fun! 🍩🍎

ASB continues to bring fun and tasty treats to our school community while raising funds for future activities!

This past week, students enjoyed delicious Krispy Kreme doughnuts and warm apple cider. These popular treats were a great way to add a little sweetness and seasonal cheer to the school day!

Staying Safe in Hot Weather Staying Safe in Hot Weather

Given the extremely hot weather that we are expecting this week, please encourage your students to drink plenty of water, bring a refillable water bottle, and wear lightweight, light-colored clothing when possible. Refer to our district’s hot weather guidance: https://sdunified.info/hotweather. Families are also encouraged to review the Heat Illness Prevention Plan with their children for information on preventing heat illness, recognizing warning signs and knowing when to seek medical attention.

In addition, please note the following:

  • All classrooms and offices in the Met building are air-conditioned.

  • Remind your students to stay hydrated! Water fountains are readily available on campus. We have some reusable water bottles in our office that can be given to students if they need one.

  • Limit outdoor activities and utilize shade if you do need to spend time outdoors. Generally speaking, there will be no school activities that require prolonged outdoor exposure.

  • Students may eat lunch in indoor, air-conditioned areas such as the Mesa Commons cafeteria.

  • Students are encouraged to tell an adult right away if they begin to feel unwell. Students who show symptoms of illness will be reminded about hydration and staying indoors, in case it is heat-related. Students may rest in the nurse’s area as needed. Our office may call home for a student to be picked up early if they are not feeling well enough to return to class.

Please reply “Received” to the email to acknowledge receipt; if you did not receive it, please check your spam/junk folder or request another copy from: cdumas@sandi.net)

2) Universal Form - completing this required form ensures your child can participate in media events, have their work showcased, and access important school resources.

3) Health Information Exchange Consent Form - this form allows families to securely submit and update student health information online, making it easier to share important health details with school staff when needed.

4) Housing Questionnaire Form allows families to provide current housing information online and helps schools identify students who may qualify for support and services under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. For questions about the Housing Questionnaire, please email Counseling and Support Services

Children and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative Children and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative

The Children and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative (CYBHI) is a statewide California initiative that helps schools sustain behavioral health and wellness services for students. Through the CYBHI Fee Schedule, San Diego Unified can receive reimbursement for eligible services provided at school.

There is no cost to families, and a student’s access to school-based support is not dependent on whether their family provides insurance information.

Parent Notification of Sexual Health Education Parent Notification of Sexual Health Education

California state law, the California Healthy Youth Act, requires that comprehensive sexual health and HIV prevention education be provided to students at least once in middle school and once in high school, starting in grade 7. In keeping with these requirements and guidelines, the Met will be offering a sexual health education unit to all students who are taking biology class this school year (primarily 9th graders). Please refer to a letter to parents/guardians with relevant information and links, in English and in Spanish.

Please click here for links to pre-recorded curriculum previews. A reminder notification will be sent to all 9th grade parents/guardians at least two weeks prior to the beginning of the sexual health instruction. If you have any questions, please contact Principal Fung at rfung@sandi.net.

Attendance and Absences

Regular and timely attendance both on campus and at internships is one of the most important factors for your student’s success! Students who are regularly tardy or absent are missing valuable learning time and are much more likely to fall behind and struggle in their studies. As such, we will be contacting parents for your support if your student is struggling with attendance.

Parents must report all student absences (including late arrivals and early departures) via the quick and simple Attendance Reporting Form online. Please submit this form EVERY TIME your student will miss all or part of a school day. This includes INTERNSHIP DAYS (TUESDAYS/THURSDAYS)! Thank you for supporting your child’s success!

User uploaded image
zoom_out_map

Daily Schedule

In our regular daily schedule, all students will attend classes on campus from 8:30am to 3:15pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Tuesdays and Thursdays are dedicated to internship search, and ALL students must attend school on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30am to 11:30am.

NEW 9th graders and 10th and 11th grade TRANSFER students will participate in the Met Gateway Program on Tuesdays and Thursdays (see below) for the first six weeks of school, where they will learn about our internship program and be prepared for internship success. After students complete Gateway, they will be eligible to begin an internship.

RETURNING students will work with their advisor on Tuesdays and Thursdays on finding an internship placement. As soon as a returning student has secured an internship, including a signed contract with the mentor, the student may start attending internship on Tuesdays and Thursdays instead of coming to campus.

Chromebooks

Students are to bring their FULLY CHARGED Chromebooks to school every day! Our district’s 1-to-1 Chromebook policy enables every student to have a Chromebook checked out to them exclusively. This means that every student can take their Chromebook home every day, and it is their responsibility to bring them back to school charged and ready to work on every day.

If your student forgets to bring their Chromebook, we unfortunately do not have extras to loan out. Your student will be asked to call home to ask for their Chromebook to be brought to school. If it cannot be brought to school by parent/guardian, the student will work on assignments in an alternative format.

Technology in the Classroom

As the start of this school year, SDUSD introduced a new learner-centered technology approach to help students stay focused, healthy, and engaged in learning. At the Met, students will see a few important changes:

  • Video-streaming platforms, such as YouTube, will only be available on district-issued Chromebooks when enabled by teachers for instructional purposes.

  • Non-instructional gaming platforms will still be prohibited on district-issued devices.

These updates are part of our commitment to creating learning environments where technology supports student learning, safety, wellness, and healthy development.

As a parent, you can also reduce screentime and non-instructional use of Chromebooks by activating your Blocksi Parent account to monitor and restrict access when your student is not at school. To learn more about how to use Blocksi, read this Blocksi Parent Job Aid.

Food on Campus

Food options on campus include free school meals (breakfast and lunch), which are provided by our school district. Students will need to sign up in the office if they wish to be on the list to receive school meals.

Students may purchase food through Mesa College food options, which include the Mesa Commons Cafeteria, open Mondays-Fridays.

In addition, students are always welcome to bring breakfast and lunch from home.

We have been experiencing very warm weather, so please have students bring reusable water bottles to stay hydrated!

Students are NOT allowed to have food delivered from delivery services (such as DoorDash, GrubHub, Uber Eats, and similar apps). Though we are located on a college campus, the Met is a CLOSED campus, and students are not allowed to leave campus during school hours without permission, nor are food deliveries or other unauthorized visitors allowed. Please ensure that your students bring food or lunch money so that they can eat well, be healthy, and stay focused on their studies!

Drop-Off and Pick-Up Information

Student drop-off and pick-up is allowed in Lot 1 in the pull-out area in front of I-400, near the bottom of the main staircase. You may also use other areas along Mesa College Circle where there are curb cuts to allow cars to pull off the road. Please DO NOT attempt to drive up to the SD Met building for drop-off or pick-up. If you plan to park and visit the Met, you may park in a 1-hour visitor spot (limited) or use pay stations to purchase an hourly parking permit in Lot 1.
