Principal's Note

Hello Shoreham Community

We had SUCH a busy week at SES!

On Wednesday, we made our annual trip to Champlain Orchards to learn all about apples. We are so lucky to have such an incredible farm right here in our community. Our students loved tasting the different types of apples, and having a sample of fresh cider. Then, on Friday, Ms. Pam (our fabulous first grade teacher!) organized a school-wide apple tasting contest! The overwhelming winner this year was... Empire!

On Thursday, 5th grade headed down to Rutland for Starbase! "The STARBASE Program is unique in that it provides students with a hands-on, experiential approach to learning, with the guidance of trained and experienced teachers and military personnel who make learning fun, practical, and relevant. The program provides students with an environment that encourages self-esteem, personal growth, individual achievement, and strong character through the positive role models found on military bases and installations." To learn more- check out their website: https://starbasevt.org/

Next week, our third grade students are going to Dead Creek to learn more about migration of birds.

Shoreham students have been incredible role models for our community when on these trips. We are so proud!

Updates & Reminders

As Matthew and Jenny navigate the complexities of leading two schools, we are wanting feedback from community members. It is important to ensure equity, clarity and consistency for Shoreham School. To that end, we are hosting a virtual Principal's Round Table on Thursday, October 19th. The zoom link will be sent later on next week. We truly hope you can join us.

-**Last call for Midland Fundraiser Orders** - Please return to Irene ASAP.

- Picture Day is Monday, October 16th. Order forms were sent home this week.

This Week in Sports! This Week in Sports!

This week, the football game moved to a bigger spot on our playground. The students decided to set up cones to mark the boundaries and end zone, and now have way more room to play!

Other students are enjoying age old games of tag, jump rope, basketball and others.

We also have a growing interest in our sandbox! Our students have loved digging holes, and making structures in the sand.

Learning about Indigenous People's Day

This is the first year we are not in school on Indigenous People's Day. We will be talking about the day at school, and you can talk with your child about it too. When you do, you are modeling how we are all reflective thinkers and inquirers. Here are some resources for you and your child about the Abenaki, who have been living in N'dakinna, the homeland of the Western Abenaki.

  • What is Indigenous People's Day? - A WCAX story about the day
  • Abenaki Alliance - An organization working to foster the collective voice of Abenaki communities
  • Abenaki History for Kids - From the Historical Society of Cheshire County and Indigenous New Hampshire Collective Collaboration
  • There are also a lot of great books by Joseph Bruchac and others at the Ilsley Library you can check out. I do love Malian's Song by Marge Bruchac (and they have this too!). I also have Night on the Living Rez on my night stand to read. You can find that at the Ilsley too.
