A message from the Health Office

Respiratory illness season is around the corner. And this is a great time for us to be reminding ourselves and our children about the healthy hygiene habits that keep us healthy!

Help prevent the spread of illness:

  • Wash hands frequently for 20 seconds.

  • Cover coughs and sneezes with an elbow.

  • Stay home when sick.

  • Get plenty of rest, stay hydrated, and eat nutritious foods.

  • Clean frequently touched surfaces.

For guidance on when to keep your child home , visit Is My Child Well Enough to Go to School?. Our Health Office staff are always available to answer questions and support students who become ill during the school day. Thank you for helping keep our school community healthy!

Congratulations, Mrs. Wagner!

Diana Wagner, a first-grade teacher at Island Lake Elementary School, was named Best Teacher (K–5) in the Shoreview Press Readers’ Choice Awards. After spending many years teaching kindergarten at Snail Lake Education Center, Diana moved to Island Lake to continue nurturing relationships with students and their families and to have more opportunities to watch her former students grow.

“Nothing makes me happier than reconnecting with former students, seeing what they are up to, and continuing to form meaningful relationships within this amazing community.” As a Mounds View alumna, Diana takes great pride in being a Mustang and feels fortunate to have her own family be part of the district as well.

Congratulations as well to this year’s finalist and last year’s winner, Nicole Anderson! We are so proud of our amazing Island Lake teachers and staff and all they do for our students and community!

PTA fundraiser: We’re 43% of the way there!

Thank you to everyone who has donated to this year’s Island Lake PTA fundraiser! We’ve raised $15,000 out of our goal of $35,000 so far, and we still have 7 days to go.

If you haven’t donated yet, here’s how to do it:

  • Contribute now through Givebacks

  • Send a check made out to “Island Lake PTA” to the front office—make sure to note your child’s teacher and grade so their class gets credit!

There will be special prizes for our top earners:

  • The 3 classrooms that earn the most will earn a special event.

  • Each child in the top-earning classroom in each grade will get a gift card.

  • And there are other surprises for each classroom at the $200, $600 and $1,000 milestones.

Feel free to share this information with grandparents, aunts, uncles… anyone who would like to help enhance your child’s Island Lake experience!

Loose Change Wednesday

This week, we asked students to bring in loose change as a part of the PTA fundraiser, and we’re doing it again next Wednesday, Oct. 28! So, look under the couch cushions and car seats and send a bag of coins with your students on Wednesday. Every penny will go toward your child’s classroom total.

Making screen time more meaningful

When it comes to screen time for students in schools, educational leaders everywhere are asking some common questions.
  • Is less screen time the only approach?
  • How can schools improve the quality of screen time?
  • Can screen time be justified if it has a meaningful impact on learning?
And with the increasing use of AI, school districts are faced with even more challenges to navigate.

This fall, Mounds View Public Schools will consider these issues and more as it convenes a steering committee to provide recommendations to the School Board. Throughout the school year, the group will solicit community feedback and look at four main areas related to educational technology.
  • Developing screen time usage guidelines
  • Creating an AI usage framework
  • Considering laptop and device monitoring tools
  • Defining active and passive use of technology

Farm to School Thursdays

This Farm to School Thursday, students enjoyed locally-produced beef meatballs from Rancher’s Legacy and Minnesota-grown delicata squash. Meatballs provide protein to help build and maintain strong muscles, while delicata squash provides vitamin A to support healthy vision.
