The holiday season is upon us! It is easy to get caught up in the stress of the season. Additionally, many people who are experiencing grief or sadness find those feelings to be more intense during this time when there is so much pressure to be joyful and celebratory.

Here are 10 tips for enjoying the holidays.

1. Reflect on what is important during this time.

2. Make your holiday plans as early as possible.

3. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from loved ones if you need it, and be specific about how they can help you.

4. Learn to see the holidays as a marathon, not a sprint. Pace yourself, and avoid over committing. 5. As best you can, try to maintain a healthy life style. Make sure you’re eating healthy foods along with all those yummy treats, and maintain an exercise routine.

6. Avoid overspending.

7. Monitor your alcohol content, and avoid mixing alcohol and medications.

8. Hold realistic expectations for a family get togethers.

9. Think ahead about traditions are stories that you would like to share.

10. After the holidays are over, reflect on what brought you joy and what you would like to change for next year.

Ms. Porter is from Blytheville, Arkansas. This is her eleventh year teaching. She graduated from the University of Arkansas with a Masters of Arts in Teaching.

When not teaching, Ms. Porter enjoys gardening, reading, and sleeping. She has two children: Caleb (15), and Abby (13), as well as 2 dogs: Gracie (5 months) and Lily (8 months).
