Principal Message
Dear Parents and Guardians,
It looks like winter is heading our way, with temperatures dipping and snow in the forecast. Please be sure students are coming to school dressed appropriately for the colder weather.
Progress Reports
Progress reports are available to families today. Please take time to review your child’s progress and reach out directly to your child’s teacher if you have any questions or would like clarification. As we review progress reports, we would also like to reinforce the importance of students paying close attention to due dates and turning assignments in on time. All assignments are expected to be submitted on the assigned due date unless a student is absent from school or prior arrangements have been made with the teacher. While teachers have shown flexibility with late work beyond absences, moving forward students are expected to follow established deadlines.
Below is a reminder of the Make Up Work expectations from the WCS Student Handbook.
Make Up Work (Handbook Page 13)
Students will be allowed one school day to make up missing formative homework/classwork for each day of an excused absence. Wherever possible, students should consult online resources to learn of their assignments. Students who are out for longer periods (more than three days of school) should contact their teachers for additional information about missing work.
Note: “Each day” refers to each school day.
Example: If a student is out for five school days, they have five school days to make up all missed work.
Accepting late work regularly from the same students does not allow them to develop important life skills such as time management and meeting deadlines. Your support is essential in helping ensure your child completes their work on time. All assignments are available in Schoology and PowerSchool, which both students and parents can access. This is truly a partnership between home and school.
Band Concert
Congratulations to all of our band students on another outstanding concert this week! Their performance left the audience in awe, and the passion they brought to the stage truly shined through in every song. We are so proud of their hard work, dedication, and musical talent.
Career Day
We held our first Annual Career Fair today, and it was an exciting and memorable experience for our students. We are incredibly thankful for the parents and community members who volunteered their time to make the day so special. The depth of knowledge you shared about your careers and the joy and enthusiasm you brought to those conversations truly made the experience magical for our students. Be sure to ask your child about the Career Fair and which careers caught their eye!
STAR Assessments & RTI Updates
Students have completed the STAR assessments in both reading and math, and we are pleased to see continued growth across grade levels. Our Response to Intervention (RTI) team is currently reviewing the data and will be notifying parents of students who will be discharged from or added to math and/or reading services. Please be sure to check your email regularly, as permission slips and communication will be sent electronically.
Great Kindness Challenge & Counselor Appreciation
Next week we will begin the Great Kindness Challenge! Our counselors have been working hard to plan a fun and festive spirit week filled with kindness challenges for students, staff, and classrooms. We encourage families to choose a few ways to show kindness together at home during the week.
Additionally, the week of February 2nd is National School Counselors Week. Please consider having your child write a note or card to thank our counselors for all they do to make WCS such a caring and supportive community.
Spring Bulletin Board Refresh
It’s that time of year again and we’re looking to refresh bulletin boards around the school for spring! If you and your family are interested in decorating a bulletin board at WCS, we would love your help. We are always looking for creative and fun ways to brighten our school building. Please email me at bmartin@windhamsd.org if you’d like to participate.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support.
Warm regards,
Mrs. Martin
WCS Principal
