Letter from the 'Editor'

Hello LSSPs,

I hope everyone is doing well. We seem to be in the height of cold and flu season, and these 30 degree temperature swings certainly aren't helping.

I wanted to spend a second to talk about resilience. It's one of the many intangible qualities that we in education talk a lot about with our students. We share at length about the merit of being able to recover from setbacks and not be deterred by hardship. There is a lot of value in sharing about resiliency, but we also need to show that resiliency to our students and colleagues.

This is an easy time of the year to get discouraged. We are deep in the school year with the end not yet in sight. The sun doesn't seem to exist. There is a general grumpiness in the air and that can lead to getting down in the dumps pretty easily. Now is the time more than ever to showcase your resilience and grit. I know your students are watching, so show them the way.

Thank you for all you do!

Getting to know you

One of my biggest goals of GSP is to get information about our LSSPs. I know your time is valuable and I don't want to ask you to spend half a day filling out tons of information, so I have settled on what I am calling the Two Question Quiz. Every so often, I humbly ask for you to answer two questions about yourself to help us get a better picture of the LSSPs in Region 10.

Intervention/Strategy: #Chatsafe

Orygen, The National Centre of Excellence in Youth Mental Health in Melbourne pulled together an amazing resource for digital discussion and engagment around self-harm and suicide. The #chatsafe guidelines are intended to help teens and young people to communicate safely online about suicide. They were developed using the Delphi consensus methodology that draws on expert opinions to identify best practice.

Sections include: Before you post anything about suicide; Sharing your own thoughts/feelings/experiences online; Communicating about someone at risk; Responding to someone at risk; and Memorial websites/pages/groups.

A free copy of the guidelines are available here.
