Stevenson High School
October 2, 2026
Dear Stevenson Families and Students,
As our Stevenson family gathers for Homecoming, our hearts are heavy with the loss of someone who truly embodied the spirit of our community. Yesterday, our beloved varsity baseball coach, Stevenson parent, and dear friend, Jerry Yatooma, passed away after a heroic five year battle with cancer.
Coach Jerryβs courage, strength, smile, and unwavering dedication to his family and community left an indelible mark on our fields, our hallways, and our families. Homecoming is a time to come together, to celebrate our bond, and to lean on one another. Letβs honor him this weekend by holding each other a little tighter, cheering a little louder, and showing the kind of spirit Coach Jerry showed us every single day.
To Coach Jerryβs family, our deepest love and prayers are with you.

Spartans Serving Community
β½Thank you to all that supported Pierson's Gift of Soccer β½
A huge THANK YOU to everyone who donated to Piersonβs Gift of Soccer Donation Drive! The response was incredible, and we are so grateful for everyone who cleaned out closets, gathered up soccer gear, and helped support this great cause. A special shoutout to Piersonβs Livonia Stevenson Soccer teammates, who were a HUGE part of making this drive such a success! From donating their own gear to helping collect and support the drive, this truly was a team effort both on and off the field! Because of everyoneβs generosity, we collected shoes, cleats, jerseys, uniforms, gloves, soccer balls and so much more that will now have a second life in the hands of kids who love the game. Pierson is incredibly appreciative of everyone who helped. Itβs pretty amazing to see what the Stevenson Soccer community can accomplish when everyone comes together! Thank you for helping us PASS BACK the gift of soccer!

Take A Closer Look at Reflections
Reflections is a multi-level arts program that brings students, families, and communities together through the creativity.
Each year, students create original works of art in response to a student-created theme. Students can enter one or more arts categories and participate the program division that best fits their grade level or support needs. Based on options available in each state, winning entries may advance for additional recognition at the state and national levels.
Reflections Theme: βWhat My Culture Means to Meβ
In Reflections, each entry must be an original creation inspired by the annual student-created Reflections theme. The theme is what makes Reflections special because every student uses the same theme, no matter their experience with making art.
Each theme inspires students to create and share their ideas through artwork. PTAs use the to engage their entire community in creativity and art-making.

NAVIGATING SHS
HOW TO RELEASE YOUR STUDENT EARLY
We do not call students out of class based on a parent phone call to the office. Please follow one of these methods:
- To have your student waiting in the office for you: Send a note with them to take (first thing in the morning) to their assistant principal's office before school starts. They will receive a pass to come to the office at the time you designate for their checkout pass. This method is beneficial because the student's attendance will be taken care of in advance, avoiding those robocalls letting you know that your student was absent.
- If you do not send a note: Please call the office about 1.5 - 2 hours before you want the student dismissed. We prepare a pass and have your student ready to go upon your arrival. If you pick up your student in the afternoon, you will receive a robocall regarding the absence. The absence will be excused the following morning by the Attendance Secretary.
IMPORTANT: Anyone picking up a student must show their ID when they arrive. The person picking up the student MUST be in the list of that student's contacts.

2026-2027 FAFSA
Haven't Completed the FAFSA Yet?? No Problem!
This school year saw delays & complications with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Thankfully that is all behind us and financial aid reports have been sending to college & trade school financial aid offices since April. If you have a graduating senior, assist their completion of the FAFSA with the resources below. There has never been a better time for students to use state & federal aid to pay for postsecondary costs. Remember, by filling out the FAFSA you are not accepting loans; your student may be eligible for free money in the form of Grants, Scholarships, Michigan Tuition Assistance Program & the Michigan Achievement Scholarship. The only way to utilize this free financial aid is to do the first step - complete the FAFSA.

Question on the Week: How can I help my student prepare for (Final) Exams?
Final exams can feel overwhelming, especially when students are balancing schoolwork, activities, sports, and other end-of-year responsibilities. Parents can help by encouraging good study habits, organization, and healthy routines well before exam day.
Start Early
Encourage your child to begin preparing one to two weeks before exams rather than waiting until the last minute. Help them look at their exam schedule and create a simple study plan. Breaking studying into 20β45 minute sessions with short breaks can make the workload feel more manageable.
Get Organized
A planner can help students keep track of exam dates, assignments, study times, and materials. Encourage your child to keep notes, review sheets, and other materials organized by subject. Knowing what needs to be doneβand whenβcan reduce stress.
Study Actively
Simply reading notes over and over may not be the most effective way to prepare. Encourage your child to:
Break large amounts of information into smaller sections.
Practice answering possible test questions.
Review information over several days rather than cramming.
Explain a concept to someone else to see if they truly understand it.
Attend teacher review sessions or study with classmates when helpful.
Put away phones and other distractions while studying.
Check Youtube for different ways to explain the material
Use Quizlet
Ask for Help
Encourage your child to talk with teachers if they are unsure about what will be covered or how the exam will be structured. If your child has an IEP or 504 plan with testing accommodations, remind them to communicate with their teacher and make arrangements to use those supports.
Take Care of the Basics
Good studying also requires taking care of the body and brain. Encourage your child to get enough sleep, eat regularly, stay active, and take breaks. Pulling an all-nighter is not a good substitute for consistent preparation.
Encourage a Growth Mindset
Final exams can be frustrating. Remind your child that they don't have to know everything immediately. Encourage phrases such as βI don't understand this yet,β βI can try a different strategy,β and βI can learn from my mistakes.β
Most importantly, recognize your child's effort, preparation, and persistenceβnot just the final grade. Helping students develop effective study habits now can benefit them throughout middle school, high school, and beyond.

Quote of the Week
With studentsβ first cumulative midterm assessments (CSAs) right around the corner, this monthβs articles will focus on helping students develop a positive mindset and proactive test preparation skills. From building confidence and managing test anxiety to preparing effectively and approaching assessments with a growth mindset, these strategies can help students feel more prepared, capable, and confident as they head into their first major assessments of the school year.
