A Letter From Head of School Carole McCullough
Hello SJCA Families,
Earlier this week, I announced some exciting updates for next year that I want to share with everyone.
For starters, we’re planning to move both fifth and sixth grade scholars to the new gym building next year. Our fifth-grade scholars are too old to be in grammar school hallways and our sixth-grade scholars are too young to be upstairs. By making this change, we hope to give scholars in both grades their own space to mature.
Due to this change, the uniforms that fifth graders currently wear will not change as they move to sixth grade; this includes formal uniforms.
Next year, we will also encourage upper school scholars to participate in Dual Enrollment with St. Johns River State College and begin offering more Advanced Placement (AP) courses. This year, we offered one AP course, but that will change next year.
Let me be clear, we will make these enhancements without straying from our Hillsdale curriculum. While we proudly stand by our classical model, our graduates need to be competitive in the real world. I believe we can do both successfully.
Our plans to add Dual Enrollment and AP Courses are still unfolding, but we want you to know that we’ve heard your requests and are committed to enhancing our upper school offerings.
We plan to release more specifics in the near future, but here are a few takeaways:
AP course offerings will be open to scholars in 9-12 grade; Dual Enrollment is open to scholars in 11-12 grade
Both Dual Enrollment and AP Courses will be weighted on a 5.0 scale
Scholars who Dual Enroll can take late afternoon, evening, or virtual classes, but may not leave campus to do so; classes are taken on the scholar’s own time
SJCA will suggest general courses for Dual Enrollment like, College Algebra, Elementary Statistics, Art Appreciation, World Languages, and others
We are still brainstorming ideas for AP Courses, but are considering AP Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus, AP US History, AP Latin, and AP European History
To teach an AP course, teachers must have their syllabus reviewed by College Board; a process we'll support our teachers with and begin soon
Scholars who are interested in Dual Enrollment or AP Courses must meet certain criteria and will discuss options with their academic advisor
I am very excited about SJCA’s future and look forward to providing more specifics soon.
-Head of School Carole McCullough
Junior Parent Meeting
If you have a junior at SJCA, please plan to attend this meeting to learn about their upcoming senior year.
Revolution Road Brings History to Life
On Thursday, grammar school scholars had a special history lesson taught by our US History scholars in grade 11; and led by our US History Teacher Carmen Burgess.
In celebration of the semiquincentennial (250th anniversary) of the Battle of Lexington and Concord and the birth of the American Revolution, scholars walked along "Revolution Road." They made five stops, each one an interactive lesson that brought Boston to life in 1775.
A few of the stops included scholars visiting:
- King George and John Hancock as they argued "no taxation without representation"
- The minutemen who explained their preparation for battle
- The British as they helped search at Concord
- General George Washington summarize the day's events
Scholars Get a Lesson in CPR
This week, Nurse Doss taught upper schoolers about CPR and AED devices.
Teacher Appreciation Week is Coming!
Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week is May 5-9.
Every year, the Lions Council takes great pride in planning a full week of activities for our dedicated teachers and staff. With your help, we can shower our wonderful teachers and staff with love.
The Lions Council Support Committee has come up with a theme: The Stars of the Show. Below you'll find a daily schedule.
Please know that participation is optional and that any kind gesture during this celebratory week is appreciated.
Remember, each teacher and staff member has filled out a "Favorite Things" sheet, which are all on the Lions Council website.
Update on PE Shirts for Grades 6-12
In the fall, SJCA will adopt a new HOPE (Health Opportunities in Physical Education) fitness program that's designed to promote physical fitness and personal growth for all scholars.
The program begins with Level 1— with the white shirts, which parents must purchase through Stryker Custom Designs. This basic level marks the start of the journey, and scholars will work to advance through the next levels as they improve their fitness.
Fitness testing will occur once a month, with students having the opportunity to challenge themselves to reach the next level during each testing day. The testing categories include Muscular Strength, Muscular Endurance, Agility, Cardiovascular Endurance, and Flexibility.
The Upper School Physical Education Department is currently fundraising to purchase the shirts scholars earn beyond the basic white t-shirt. The plan is to give these t-shirts to scholars as they're earned.
If you'd like to support the initiative, please reach out to Hannah Patterson at Hannah.Patterson@stjca.org for more details on how to donate.

Tabs will be delivered to the Ronald McDonald House in Jacksonville, and they will be recycled for cash to help provide housing and meals for families visiting Jacksonville while their children receive medical care at our local hospitals.
