Weekly Updates and Reminders 1/5-1/16

Hello Hamilton Families!

Happy New Year!!

I hope your holidays were all that you hoped they would be and you enjoyed quality time with the people you love. I had a wonderful Christmas especially since we celebrated my grandson Dawsons first Chritmas. Before break we also had some Christmas fun at Hamilton and I included the pictures below.

Now that the holidays are behind us I hope 2026 is off to a great start and keeps right on going for a wonderful year! I hope you and your children are ready to get back to our school routines and activities. I am excited to see our kiddos and get back to work on all of our academic and behavioral goals.

This time of year many people are making New Years Resolution's, and again this year I challenge you to make New Years action steps. It is great to have a goal, but a goal with out a plan is just a wish!! Think about the small steps you need to take towards a bigger goal. Planning your smaller action steps leads to achieving big goals. For example, if you have a goal to be healthier in 2026, start small. You can start by making one healthy change a month. Start by adding walking for 10 minutes 4 times a week. Then add planning out your meals and having the supplies on hand will help to avoid the quick stops for fast food. Once you have that healthy habit in place you can move to your next action step. Breaking your goal up into smaller action steps is a great way to be successful.

One goal I have for Hamilton is to increase student attendance ( which includes less tardies and less early pick ups). I hope you will join me in this effort. A good first action step is to go to bed at a reasonable time so kids are ready to get up on time for school. It is a great time to get started with this healthy and productive habit! I will be reaching out to families to set up meetings so we can partner up to help increas your child's attendance. My second goal is to increase awareness of healthy food choices. I will be adding a healthy tip to our bi-montly news letters for parents to try at home too.

NWEA Assessments

Our second round of NWEA testing begins on 1/12 and ends 1/30. Please make sure your child is at school on time for the full day during our NWEA testing time so they don't have to miss recess for make up tests.

Hamilton Wear

If you would like to order Hamilton wear we use AK Sports in Wayne and we have an online store (Link Below). We do not make a profit on these items and you pay directly to the company.

Healthy Habits

Kids who are active from a young age, tend to stay that way. But exercise doesn’t have to mean the same thing to every family, says Ben King M.D., a primary care pediatrician at Weill Cornell Medicine. “It’s less about the what and more about the how much.”.

So how much is enough? It depends on age. The American Academy of Pediatrics offers the following guidelines:

  • Infants: Encourage your baby to move and play during “tummy time” for at least 30 minutes, every day.

  • Toddlers: Kids aged 1 to 3 should engage in at least 3 hours a day of physical activity.

  • Young children: Ages 3 to 5, at least 3 hours of physical activity is an optimal goal.

  • School kids, adolescents and young adults: These young people are encouraged to aim for at least an hour of physical activity every day.

PBIS Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports

Our current spotlight behavior is Responsibility- I choose my own actions. We had our PBIS assembly back in December to introduce our spotlight behavior focus. The students learned what it means to take responsibility for their choices. Talk to your child about what it means to have positive and negative consequences of the choices we make. Below are some short videos that you can watch with your child.

School Cancelation Notifications

If the district has to close school you will be notified via automated phone call first. This will also be posted on our district web site, wwcsd.net and posted on the Dojo school story. There is no need to individually message school staff to ask if there is school. This also a good reason to make sure your accurate/current phone number is on file so the call goes to the correct number. You can also check WDIV news https://www.clickondetroit.com/ for school closures as the district will also post it there. Again, the place to check for school closing are school story on Dojo, WWCSD.net, and WDIV if you don't receive a call.

Transportation

  1. Transportation

For students who ride the bus, please make sure they are at the bus stop 10 minutes prior to the assigned time as the routes can run early from time to time. The same is true at the end of the day, please be at the bus stop 10 minutes prior to drop off just incase they are early.

All Young 5's and Kindergarten students must be met by an adult at the bus before they will be let off the bus. If you want your child Y5 or K student to be released to an older sibling or family member you can fill out a form in the office to give to the driver.

Wayne-Westland Community Schools has partnered with Here Comes the Bus to offer families an app that will help avoid students and parents from waiting too long for the bus. Here Comes the Bus allows parents to see where their child’s bus is along the route and when it will be at their bus stop.

Family Resource Center

The Corewell School Based Health Clinic at Adams Middle School is a great resource available to children ages 3 to 21 that live or attend school in Wayne/Westland. They provide medical services including: sports physicals, well child exams, school and childhood vaccines, hearing and vision screenings, sick visits, as well as mental health counseling. The clinic accepts all insurances, but no one is ever turned away for the inability to pay. They also have staff trained to assist families apply for medicaid. They are a great option if your student needs back to school vaccines or sports physicals and can't get into their PCP office, have no insurance, or can't pay a copayment. Appointments are highly recommended. They are open 5 days a week and hours vary. Call 734-728-2423 to schedule an appointment or if you have any questions.

Family Resource Center

Wayne-Westland Community Schools has a Family Resource Center (FRC), which provides services to any student/family enrolled in our District, free of cost. Some of the services they provide are: basic need assistance, access to over 700 local resources, Laundry Assistance Program and material items for those unable to afford them (emergency toiletries, socks/underwear, hats/gloves/scarves, etc.) They are also able to supply school supplies and backpacks year round for any WWCS student. Please contact our Family Resource Center at: 734-419-2709 or FRC@wwcsd.net. Our FRC also has a Digital Request for Services Form, which can be used to request assistance by filling out a simple form. Please contact the Family Resource Center directly with any additional questions regarding their services
