Mary Hogan Family News
September 25th, 2026
Hello Mary Hogan Families!
It has been a real fall week this week - with cool temperatures in the morning and warm recesses. These days are ones where students sometimes lose track of their sweatshirts. It is a good idea to check in with your children to help them keep track of layers during this season of transition. If you lose any clothes, we do have a Lost and Found that you are welcome to come check out.
We had a great week this week and I am so excited for next week when we have an All School Meeting and some visitors from New Zealand joining our 3rd-5th graders as well as our Orchard Visit. Parents who let Lorrie know they wanted to volunteer will hear from me this weekend with more information.
Have a great weekend!
💙,
Jen

News from School This Week
Middlebury College Football Mentors
We had football mentors from the Middlebury College Football team come to 3rd through 5th grade lunches this week. The college students are mentoring students at Mary Hogan and the students are loving having them at lunch. They are promoting healthy conversations and providing mentorship each week. We are so grateful to have them back!
Thank you for the sandbox donations!
We are so grateful for the donations that have come in for our sandbox. If you have any other donations, please send them along. We love new toys. Students at all recesses - K through 5 - have been digging, building, and playing with lots of joy!
How does your eye work?
As part of their current unit of inquiry, the 4th graders are learning about all the different human body systems. From the brain to the digestive system and beyond, these students are soaking up more information about how their own bodies work.
One body part they have examining is the eye and how the eye works. They have built model eyes with paper and used lenses to see how the distance between the lens and eye makes a difference in how much you can see. They also thought about the difference between our eyes, which are built to be awake in the day and nocturnal animals, whose eyes are built to be awake at night. It was eye-opening conversation!
Letter sounds
Students in kindergarten have been learning letters and letter sounds. One way they do this is with mirrors! They were using the mirror to see their own mouth and what it looked like when they said the sound of the letter. It is another tool for students to think about letters and sounds as well as how to say the sound correctly.
