Principal's Message
As this year closes one may ask themselves what was achieved in a year that COVID played a significant role in terms one and two. The answer is found in both the Senior and Junior Prizegiving events. The accomplishments were many and varied. They remind us that although adversity is inevitable, the very best is borne in such conditions. It is the fruit of tenacity (the manopare) and courage (the lion rampant).
As you spend time with our young people over the next few weeks, please consider the following homework.
- Spend time with each other.
- Do things that you all enjoy.
- Eat the food you love while introducing the range to our young people.
- Watch a film together.
- Make each other laugh.
- Together make someone else laugh or smile.
- Together, do something nice for somebody else.
- Together, make a gift or toy for someone else.
- Last, but not least, enjoy each others company.
Thank you, mauri ora.

Pathways
This was a two day course held at McInnes Driver Training.
New and exciting things are happening within the Pathways Department in regards to Barista Courses for 2023. If you are interested in taking part, please see Colleen to put your name down.
Thursday 17th November was the opening of the Building Academy and welcome to our new students for 2023. Congratulations to Christian Beach, George Bodle, Genius Crawford, Jasper Florence, Sadida Hawea, Rusty Jones, Renata Leach, Ruka Leilua, Noah Lewis, Jacq Martin, Flex McGhee, Killian Pellow, Connor Rennie, Taotu Tuari, Tu Maurirere Tuwairua and Eli Walker. Also a massive congratulations to two of our 2022 students, Savannah Tuari and Maruata White who have successfully secured Building Apprenticeships for 2023.
Jarrod Waikawa-Nepe
Jarrod has been playing darts since 2019. He joined Tao Matarau Darts Academy under the leadership of Matiu and Kiri Hawea in 2020. In 2020 Jarrod was a member of the GCDA (Gisborne Club Darts Association) and won the B-Grade.
Jarrod has attained many certificates and acknowledgements over the past 2 years. He is a dedicated club member and a great support to others in the club.
Due to COVID restrictions the Academy organised for all players to participate in On-line dart games against other countries, enabling them to continue playing. The logistics around holding these games was set up by Japan and all players needed two digital devices, a dart board and a playing area in which to compete. Links were sent to all players around the world and according to time differences children either played from home or got together at the academy, in their bubble to play in team events. Jarrod was in charge of setting up the devices at home, sorting our scores and downloading them appropriately.
This year has seen many changes in the darts clubs, but Jarrod has tried his best to keep playing and to keep the high standard of play going. He was selected to represent NZ in the Junior/Youth World Championships to be held in Gibraltar/Spain this month. Jarrod is
one of 5 members from around the country in the team. They will play others of the same age from around the world.
On the right is Jarrod’s creative input into his Dart logo. With the help of whanau he drew this as his way of taking something from home to the other side of the world. Jarrod’s Papa, Randall Leach, helped him improve the design and change it into a digital image so that it can be printed onto a players uniform.
Jarrod is pictured here in the center of the photo.
Digital Navigators
This term, a group of Ritana students had the opportunity to make virtual waves by becoming Digital Navigators. This event was sponsored by Amazon Web Services and allowed our Ritana whanau to learn a little more about how websites, apps, and games are created.
This event was held at Te Poho o Rawiri marae. Everyone involved had a great time and the prizes that were handed out just made the learning easier. There was a wide variety of activities, which included building and playing your own online game, racing to construct the highest spaghetti and marshmallow tower, creating TikTok's and stacking cups whilst being blindfolded.
We now have the Code Avengers platform for school-wide use, so please let us know if you’d like access to grow your own coding skills.
Te Rōpū Rangatahi o Rītana
Te Rōpū Rangatahi o Rītana came together late last term under the tutelage of Jade Hinaki (former student of Lytton High School). The rōpū had been in hiatus so to see a revival of the rōpū was greatly welcomed by staff, students and tutors. Although a relatively small and young group, Te Rōpu Rangatahi o Rītana gathered together regularly for practices in Te Ahi Kōmau and represented Lytton High School at the Senior Prizegiving in November. The focus is now looking towards developing the students and preparing for the regional Ngā Manu Kōrero competitions in 2023. These also include the qualifiers for the National Kura Tuarua Kapa Haka competition in 2024. We thank those senior students who have paved the way for this new and exciting journey and we look forward to seeing new students join Te Rōpū Rangatahi o Rītana in the new year.
Angitu, success and Celebration
Term Four has been a very busy and successful one for Angitu and as we end this term and welcome the summer holidays, our theme of celebration is very appropriate. Angitu’s celebration has been an opportunity for our students to acknowledge their culture, their uniqueness, honour their whanau, toast, sing and dance for special occasions. A cake for a birthday, a certificate of acknowledgement for hard mahi, running a cross country, taking part in modified games and being on stage with Kia Manawanui and performing in the Tairawhiti Kapa Haka Festival. What fun that was!
Celebrating akonga uniqueness was captured in their stories and songs and in a variety of activities - for example, akonga and teachers shared the creation of a Chinese wall dragon, writing letters and designing envelopes and tags to encourage the idea that we can take from the positives and be hopeful and thankful for the small things. Teachers enjoyed the opportunities to help akonga learn and expand their skills. Modified games supported our akonga needs and brought out the competitiveness in them. Watch this space…
Takiwatanga means ‘in one's own time and space.’ - an appropriate meaning when reflecting on the physical and mental development, community and whanau relationships our akonga share.
From Angitu to you all - kia hari Kirihimete koutou katoa
HAVING FUN WITH MOCKTAILS
Tūranganui Schools Māori Cultural Festival
Our Rangatahi from Te Whare Taupua represented Rītana at the 37th Tūranganui Schools Māori Cultural Festival.
The major theme for the Tūranganui Schools Māori Cultural Festival logo is based upon the sun and the radiant warmth it is able to permeate once risen. Once our rangatahi were on stage they personified the life that the sun is able to give rise to, foster, and nurture. It was their time to shine! Their warmth spread throughout the whole whare!
The long black figures represent the many people who have contributed to the Tūranganui Schools’ Māori Cultural Festival over the past 37 years. The sharp points on the ends of these black figures represent the form of a ‘teka’, a piece laid at a formal challenge (Matataki). This represents the many challenges our rangatahi had to endure and every akonga rose to the challenge to perform in front of their whānau and friends.
We are so proud of our Rangatahi! Kei runga noa atu koutou!
Farewell to Kay Scragg.
As we say farewell to Kay, after 50 years of teaching (not all at Lytton) we will all remember her in different ways. Here are some thoughts of Kay from various staff members.
“Kay showed so much pure empathy to our students with disabilities of any nature. They were always treated equally and the work was adapted to meet their needs. She will surely be missed, as will her knowledge.”
“Kay has always had something kind to say to me, complimenting me on my work, my clothes and my hair (haha). She also makes a great cup of coffee. I will miss seeing you first thing in the morning Kay, before everyone else arrives. Arohanui.”
“Kay has been a great source of wisdom and she often speaks of the things that are important in the teaching profession: a passion for one's subject and a real interest in making sure that students do well. On a personal level I will remember Kay for her fabulous necklaces and the way she wielded her coffee in the mornings before school, and I'm grateful that she took time to get to know me as a person new to Gisborne.”
“Kay's knowledge and passion for teaching has always been inspiring to those around her. She has an excellent sense of humor and is always present at any school event to celebrate our student's success. It has been a pleasure to teach alongside her and I am sure she will not be a stranger to Ritana in the future.”
“Kay Scragg is one of the kindest human beings that I know. A hugely knowledgeable and supportive teacher, she treats everyone with respect and thoughtfulness. She's always ready to help her colleagues and friends. Her retirement is well-earned, but I'm glad she'll be back with us next year, even just for one day a week.”
What wonderful accolades from your colleagues Kay. We will miss your flamboyant style of dress, passion for your subject and your fabulous coffee and cakes.
Ka kite ano.

Since arriving at Rītana in Year 10, this young man had been a relatively low-key, off the radar kind of guy. Until this year. When he decided to try his hand in the performing arts arena. In the lead male role of the school production. Not only did he rehearse diligently, learning his part, he owned his role as Māui, contributing immensely to the success of the production.
This year’s winner of the award for Outstanding Cultural Performance by a Senior Boy
Haami Salmanzadeh
Giving 100% to whatever she involves herself in has become almost a mantra for this young lady throughout her time at Rītana. On the cultural front, she has been a member of Te Rōpū Rangatahi o Rītana since Year 9, regularly helping younger members as they came through the ranks and leading by example. Extending her knowledge in this arena, she was part of the inaugural Te Ao Haka class this year, taking out 1st place. Obviously no stranger to performance with this background, this year she also took on the lead role in the school production of Moana Junior, again mentoring those involved in the production as well as delivering stellar performances herself. As part of this year’s prefect team, she has involved herself in the wider school cultural community, both leading and supporting these activities throughout the school.
Recipient of the Christine Martin Memorial Trophy for Outstanding Contribution to Kapa Haka, the Parker Family Cup for Outstanding Cultural Performance by a Senior Girl and the Lytton High School Cup for Cultural Person of the Year
Rhiannon Kapa
Highest Sports Awards
Brooking Poi
Most Conscientious Senior Boy in Sport Moxley CupHaving qualified last year, this young athlete had to make the commitment to training in the hope that world events would not determine that she could not compete. A member of the renowned Horouta Waka Hoe club, this dedication paid off last term when she successfully competed at the International Va’a Federation Va’a World Club Championship in London. Paddling for the J-19 Manawahine crew, she won gold in the V6 500m sprint, the V6 1000m sprint and the V12 500m sprint. Not satisfied with this haul, she also went on to claim gold with the Kaiārahi Toa crew in the Open Womens V12 500m sprint.
This year’s winner of the McIldowie Cup for the Most Outstanding Individual Sporting Achievement is
Te Riringa Babbington-Parata
Having been a fitness enthusiast his entire high school life may have had something to do with the array of sporting codes this young man has involved himself in. A dedicated team player, leading by example, this has been recognised with captaincy roles in both Kī-o-Rahi and football. Also highly motivated to train for individual pursuits, this year he was 2nd in the Senior Boys Swimming Champs, winner of the Senior Triathlon, Senior Boys Cross Country and Senior Boys Athletics.
Tonight receiving the Alan Dunsmore Cup for Sportsman of the Year
Kyle McVey
A multi-sport athlete, this young lady has acquitted herself well across codes. From Kī-o-Rahi to football, netball to rugby - apart from racquet sports she has probably had a go at them all. An excellent team member and committed trainer, she was selected for the Poverty Bay U-18 Football team, playing for both Lytton 1st XI and her Thistle club. Also motivated in individual pursuits, she competed in the school swimming champs, won the Senior Girls Cross Country and Senior Girls Athletics.

Horticulture & Farming Operations
The Year 10 Trades academy went on a field trip to look at Horticulture and Farming operations.
The photo shows a group of students looking at grass varieties on Mr Wins farm.
This trip was very successful and all students enjoyed their day out.
Eugene's Corner
Hockey – After an absence of 2 years as a result of COVID and Orange status, we finally were able to host Taikura College from Napier. We share the mission statement ‘Together to Excellence ‘. Hockey is their number 1 sport and it showed. They were relentless in their attack on our goal and it seemed it was only a matter of time before they would score. They played a fast expansive game, with key playmakers here and there who were able to turn our attack into defense at the other end. It was good to catch up with Taikura to renew whanaungatanga ties, well done to them, we look forward to hosting them next year. Many thanks to all those who brought kai to share and especially to Mrs.Evelyn Brown for her catering skills. To Louise Teneti for her continued support of us in all facets, thank you.
Murray Halberg Games – Tama Wirepa is a member of the Gisborne Parafed Team that competed at the Murray Halberg Games, held during the break 8 -9 October, at Kings College, Auckland. He told me that it was a lot of fun and he enjoyed it. In athletics he got a personal best in the 100M race and the Discus, coming in first place. He came second in the 200m & 400m and was unplaced in the long jump and 50m sprint. In the swimming events, he was 2nd in the 50m races of freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke. But in the 25m races he placed first in the freestyle, breast and backstroke. As a result of his outstanding success at the games, Tama had the ‘Best and Fairest Award’ in his ability class bestowed upon him and Gisborne received the ‘Best Team Award’. We wish Tama all the best of ‘Ritana’, (Kia mate ururoa, koi mate wheke} as he prepares for the NZ Athletic Track
and Field Championships coming up on 9th – 11th December 2022 in Inglewood, Taranaki.
Ngata 7s – We were lucky we had a bus that fitted us all in with a couple of seats to spare. We were also lucky with the weather, at last on our side. As it happened, we had to combine our Y9 and Y10 Netball girls. Ngata had a mixed team so we played a trump card in Jarrod Waikawa. We didn’t make the finals, but everyone enjoyed themselves. These Y9's know what to expect next year. Thanks Ngata College for hosting us. Nga mihi. Thank you to Lana Waitoa and Lillie Mae Valentine for their care of our netballers. Also thank you to Go Bus for their service.
Volleyball – The Tairawhiti Secondary Schools Volleyball Tournament got underway this term, with Boys being hosted at GBHS and Girls at Lytton High School. Both Lytton teamshad success and from all accounts seem to be unchallenged to some degree. Their accomplishment is borne from time and coaching put into them by TIC, Mr. Daryl Dunn. Fa’afetai tele lava.
Softball – The Tairawhiti Softball Association Competition has attracted mixed grades this year and a few of our students have entered themselves into friends and whanau teams playing ‘Slow Ball Pitch’ Friday evenings. We also have a few take part in a ‘Fast Pitch’ competition in Hawkes Bay, meaning they have to travel each weekend for their games.
Ripper Rugby – I thought my hustle to get a Junior Girls representative team to the Poverty Bay Rugby Football Union Secondary Schools 2022 Quick Rip Rugby Festival was such, that yielded 9 interested girls to take part. Not bad. However, on the day only, Capria Tamatea, Iris Roe and Jessica Garth presented themselves. Not good. Many thanks to Girls High School for their support in making our girls feel welcome in a combined effort against other schools, including their Girls High Teams. When the heavens opened up, I thought the players would succumb to the downpour and "head for the’ hills" as I did. But it was the opposite, they remained staunch and continued playing, with unrelenting enthusiasm and enjoyment. In fact, the slippery ground added to the fun and laughter as people were found slipping and sliding on the field. Thanks to Miah Nikora and his team, from the PBRFU, for running this activity.
Athletics – The lead up to the athletics day, was as expected I suppose, given the history. We were in with a treat in the 1500M Senior Boys race with Kyle McVey lining up. Really, he had no one capable of pushing him in the 5 x round a 300M track, other than his supporters across the finish line, willing and screaming at him to push himself faster, egging him on, a new record within his grasp. But alas, he recorded a feisty 5.07, out by 2 seconds to share the record of 5.05.29 held by Kemble Cadwallader. Just goes to show how good a middle distance runner is
our Kyle. Jakeb Te Kani Brown was all determination in winning the Junior Boys 1500M and 800M.
The Lytton High School Athletics day was a beauty. Students, dressed in their house colors, some with streamers, tutus and war paint, rhythmically dancing groups here and there to the boom boom music. All "Houses" needed this day to flex their muscle and cement as many points on offer as they could. The 100M, 200M, 400M, Long Jump, Shot Put and Disc provided plenty of opportunity for rivalry points. There was a lot of grit and tenacity on display and more than a lot of fun. However, a person that showed his fortitude and power was Caleb Poole, in the Senior Boys Shot Put, who shattered the previous mark (11.80M) with a throw of 11.92M. Tu Maurirere Tuwairua was all talent and high-spirited in the 400M, but, just 2 seconds shy from the Lytton record (59.12) in a time of 1.01.
Another to show determination and mettle was Tas Gurau who flashed in to record a personal best in the 100M final with a time of 11.65, (11.63). Tino pai o mahi. The final of the 100M and House Relays is always entertaining and provide a grand spectacle to end the day. Emerging as Athletic Champions on this day were: Junior Boys Taj Lodge, Junior Girls Capria Tamatea, Intermediate Boys Tu Maurirere Tuwairua, Intermediate Girls, Amandine Mariette, Senior Boys, Kyle McVey and Senior Girls Champ, Rhiannon Kapa. Congratulations to whare Makauri, the overall House winner of the athletics this year. Ka mau te wehi.
Indebted appreciation, to all those that made it possible for our rangitahi to participate in many sporting activities throughout the rohe and motu. I would like to acknowledge, Sport Gisborne, Tairawhiti Softball Association, Gisborne Basketball Association, Poverty Bay Rugby Football Union, Gisborne Netball Centre, Central Football Federation, Tairawhiti Association Secondary Schools Principals Association (TASSPA), Poverty Bay Hockey, Gisborne Indoor Bowls and Gisborne Badminton Centre, for delivering sporting events that kept our students safe and active.
To the Lytton Staff, Lytton Board of Trustees, Coaches, Managers, Student Leadership, Parental support and whanau whanui of the Lytton community of our sportspeople, thank you all for your contribution, influence and impact you have with our teams. Cooking, cleaning, baking, laundry, driving to and fro, picking up, dropping off, umpiring when required etc. I’m sure the experiences gained, the friends found and the memories made would be treasured for years to come.
