MA Celebrates Color Spirit Week - No Place for Hate Kick-Off
No Place for Hate Kick-Off
Grade 6 students reviewed the definition and roles students play in bullying situations and learned the difference between rude, mean, and bullying behavior.
Students in Grades 7 and 8 focused on the roles students play in bullying situations. We specifically discussed the role of "messengers," people who often seek to cause conflict between friends as well as bystanders. We discussed different strategies that could be used to support someone who was the target of bullying. We also talked about ways to move from bystander to upstander.
All students were reminded of the importance of telling a trusted adult if they are experiencing bullying or harrassment. Various methods of reporting were reviewed.
-We reviewed the Safe2Say Something program used throughout Pennsylvania.
-Students can report to an adult in school in person or by email.
-We have also created an anonymous online reporting form called the MA CARES reporting form. This can be used to anonymously report issues that a student needs an adult to assist with resolving. This form is listed on our website under Quick Links and goes directly to prinicpals and counselors.
-Parents can also use all of these methods to report concerns as well.

District Parent Virtual Presentation - "Isolation: The New Drug of Choice"
Thank you to those families who were able to join us on October 14th for this virtual parent presentation. Here is the link to the recorded session: Isolation: The New Drug of Choice. We will also post this link to our website under Announcements.
With the ever-increasing dependence on laptops, smart phones, social media and online gaming, especially during these past 18 months, it’s no wonder teens and young adults prefer to stay in their rooms during their free time rather than connect with their peers IRL (in real life). This presentation addressed the causes of chronic isolation, the effects of living through a pandemic, and offered advice to parents in ways they can help their teens to break the isolation cycle.
MA Library Happenings - Skype a Scientist, Haunt the LIbrary and 3D Printing
We Skyped with computer scientist Rob Ross who works for Amazon in an area of machine learning that teaches computers to interpret images. He spoke with students about how broad the discipline of computer science is and how he came to understand that it was the right career for him.
Students asked excellent questions about computer intelligence, which led to a riveting discussion concerning when computers will be smarter than the people who program them, what intelligence means, and a historical glance at the speed of technological development.
Special guest Mr. Steve Kelly helped guide us through the tech.
We will be Skyping another scientist in November, sign ups will be on the MA Library events page!
This week in our Library at Lunch series, students are invited to enjoy Haunt the Library, spooky stories told by Ms. Grosso. The library is transformed by giant spiderwebs and spiders, LED candlelight, haunting tales, and a witchy librarian. Students may sign up on the library events page and should eat lunch first! A pass to Haunt the Library is a pass to the head of the lunch line!
Library at Lunch will feature 3D printing workshops during the first week of November and more MakerSpace programming thereafter.
Skating Party for Grade 6
