Gender Support Plans Gender Support Plans

Did you know that every student in PSUSD has the right to a Gender Support Plan at school?

If you know any students that express concerns, thoughts or ideas about their gender identity or pronouns, there is a trained staff member at every school site ready to support them!

A gender support plan is a document that is filled out in collaboration with the student in order to help them to identify safe people, safe places, and an overall plan for their safety and comfort at school.

Its purpose is to ensure that the child has the supports they need on campus.

Its purpose is NOT to make an official name or gender change on Synergy - that is a separate process. This plan is only shared with people the student identifies to be safe - it might not be shared with all staff, and it might not be shared with families.

If you don't know who your site's trained staff member is, reach out to your administrator!

As you begin this new school year, consider the language and procedures you use in your classroom and school. Are you asking students to line up or take turns based on a "boy, girl, boy, girl" pattern, or are you using gender neutral language to accomplish this goal? Do you address your class as "you guys" or are you including everyone by using language such as "hey everyone!"? On the whole, are you creating gendered spaces, or are you creating spaces in which students across the gender spectrum feel seen and safe?

This article from Gender Spectrum offers some great tips on creating and maintaining a gender inclusive classroom!
