Are you looking for a fun way to honor your child’s birthday? Donate a book to the Cowlishaw library! Submit the information at any time during the school year and we will invite your child to choose a book from the Birthday Book Club cart during the month of their birthday (or half-birthday)!

Last week, 4th & 5th grade students enjoyed a BookBreak virtual author visit with author, Thannha Lai! Her first novel, Inside Out & Back Again (2011), which won the National Book Award and a Newbery Honor, was partly based on her childhood as a refugee growing up in the southern United States. Students enjoyed hearing Thannhai read aloud, her name story, and about the sequel to Inside Out & Back Again. Congrats to our raffle winners who won an autographed copy of one of her books!

Last week, 1st grade students enjoyed a BookBreak virtual author visit with author, Stacy McAnulty! She writes fiction and nonfiction picture books, young-reader chapter books, middle-grade novels, and middle-grade nonfiction. Many of her books embrace her passion for STEM in a way that’s accessible and fun for all kids. She likes to think of herself as a story engineer! Students enjoyed hearing Stacy read aloud and are excited for her next book, Our Solar System!

In partnership with Anderson’s Bookshop and their Authors-In-Schools program, Cowlishaw Elementary School is delighted to welcome author, Varian Johnson, for a Kindergarten - 3rd grade visit on Friday, May 9th! Mr. Johnson will talk with students about his career as an author and discuss his new book, Little Big Man.

In honor of Mr. Johnson’s visit, we would love for all students to wear Cowlishaw spirit wear and/or school colors (blue and green).

Additionally, to guarantee a personalized, autographed copy of Varian Johnson’s book, Little Big Man, please place your order via PushCoin by Tuesday, May 6th. After May 6th, there will be a limited supply of signed books available for purchase through Tuesday, May 13th.

Starting school is a big step for children and their families! Becoming an Elementary School Parent is a helpful presentation designed to guide parents and guardians through this exciting transition. You’ll learn what to expect as your child begins full-time school and discover ways to support their emotional growth. The event will end with a panel discussion featuring experienced staff from Indian Prairie School District 204, who will answer your questions and share valuable insights. Enjoy coffee, light snacks, and a casual conversation with District 204 Superintendent Dr. Adrian Talley, Board Member Catey Genc, and Board Member Justin Karubas. This informal gathering is an opportunity to share your thoughts on what the district is doing well and what you’d like to see in the future. The session will take place at the Waubonsie Valley High School LMC on Wednesday, May 7 at 7:00 PM. Please note that this event will not be recorded, and individual situations will not be discussed.
