Courthouse Experience Tours
Are you looking for a meaningful way to bring civics and the judicial system to life for your students? Courthouse Experience Tours are now available through the Civics Learning Project. These visits give students a firsthand look at Oregon’s judicial system by bringing them into working courthouses to observe court proceedings and see how the justice system operates in practice. Students can explore the roles of judges, attorneys, court staff, and others while building critical thinking, observation, and questioning skills. CLP provides orientation and resources to help educators and students prepare for and navigate their visit.
Interested in bringing your students to the courthouse? Complete our Courthouse Experience Tour Sign-Up Form. You can also visit the Civics Learning Project website for additional information, educator resources, and opportunities to connect classroom learning with Oregon’s civic and legal institutions.

How Bess Truman Helped Save the White House From Demolition
Recent renovations at the White House have renewed debate over how the building should change and what must be preserved. More than 75 years ago, that question confronted First Lady Bess Truman. By the late 1940s, the White House was structurally unsafe, forcing the Truman family to move into Blair House while engineers and Congress considered what to do next. One proposal called for demolishing the mansion and rebuilding it from scratch. Bess Truman, a first lady who generally avoided publicity, favored preserving the historic exterior while rebuilding the interior. In this short video, Anita McBride, a co-author of “Remember the First Ladies,” explains how Truman drew on her political experience and relationships on Capitol Hill to make the case. Lesson plan included.

Moral Complexity Literary Lens Reading Protocol
This learning experience supports students in applying a three-part protocol to read a short text and consider how it demonstrates moral decision-making. When we read with a moral complexity lens, we closely examine moments of decision-making in texts that involve nuanced questions lacking clear right and wrong answers—moments where characters must weigh competing values, perspectives, and outcomes. Reading this way can help students slow down their thinking, articulate influences on decision-making that are often invisible, and resist rushed moral judgments.
