February Volume I

MSAA MattersFebruary Volume I

February 10th

Dear Colleagues,

I know each of you joins me in wishing Executive Director, Bill Gaine good health and happiness in his retirement in September 2021. In the meantime, we will continue to benefit from his exceptional stewardship and guidance.

This edition is dedicated to providing resources for Black History Month. The only caveat I offer is that these resources can and should be used all year round, incorporated into the curriculum across all disciplines at all levels. As each of you look for ways to take action to help your school/district achieve that next level of inclusivity, remember Ijeoma Oluo words in her book So You Want To Talk About Race: "We cannot talk our way out of a racially oppressive system. We can talk our way into understanding, and we can then use that understanding to act." See below for resources for all grade levels-there are many videos for use with students, videos to use with staff and your parent community as well as compelling articles. Additionally, thanks to Henry Turner , Principal of Newton North High School and current MSAA Board Memberl for the resources he has provided and Craig Martin, Executive Director of Bridge Boston Charter School in Boston and former MSAA Board Member for his Wakelet, chock full of outstanding resources.

I have also included Larry Ferlazzo's piece from Education Week, February 2nd, the first in a series of two interviews. In this first one he interviews an 8th grade Boston Public School teacher regarding her thoughts on all of the adult talk on students losing ground during this pandemic. I know from our Ring Central Gatherings this is very much on your minds. Click here.

How racial bias works -- and how to disrupt it

How racial bias works -- and how to disrupt it

Our brains create categories to make sense of the world, recognize patterns and make quick decisions. But this ability to categorize also exacts a heavy toll in the form of unconscious bias. In this powerful talk, psychologist Jennifer L. Eberhardt explores how our biases unfairly target Black people at all levels of society -- from schools and social media to policing and criminal justice -- and discusses how creating points of friction can help us actively interrupt and address this troubling problem.

Color blind or color brave?

Color blind or color brave?

The subject of race can be very touchy. As finance executive Mellody Hobson says, it's a "conversational third rail." But, she says, that's exactly why we need to start talking about it. In this engaging, persuasive talk, Hobson makes the case that speaking openly about race — and particularly about diversity in hiring -- makes for better businesses and a better society.

How we can start to heal the pain of racial division

"Where does it hurt?" It's a question that activist and educator Ruby Sales has traveled the US asking, looking deeply at the country's legacy of racism and searching for sources of healing. In this moving talk, she shares what she's learned, reflecting on her time as a freedom fighter in the civil rights movement and offering new thinking on pathways to racial justice.

The most powerful woman you've never heard of

The most powerful woman you've never heard of

Everyone's heard of Martin Luther King Jr. But do you know the woman Dr. King called "the architect of the civil rights movement," Septima Clark? The teacher of some of the generation's most legendary activists -- like Rosa Parks, Diane Nash, Fannie Lou Hamer and thousands more -- Clark laid out a blueprint for change-making that has stood the test of time. Now T. Morgan Dixon and Vanessa Garrison, the cofounders of GirlTrek, are taking a page from Clark's playbook to launch a health revolution in the US -- and get one million women walking for justice. (This ambitious idea is part of the Audacious Project, TED's initiative to inspire and fund global change.)

How to fix a broken school? Lead fearlessly, love hard

On Linda Cliatt-Wayman's first day as principal at a failing high school in North Philadelphia, she was determined to lay down the law. But she soon realized the job was more complex than she thought. With palpable passion, she shares the three principles that helped her turn around three schools labeled "low-performing and persistently dangerous." Her fearless determination to lead -- and to love the students, no matter what -- is a model for leaders in all fields.
