First language speakers to share wisdom
NATIVE LANGUAGE REVITALIZATION GRANT SUPPORTS DEC. 18 EVENT
Red Wing community members will have a rare opportunity to meet first-language Dakota elders on Thursday, Dec. 18.
“To say this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity is not an exaggeration,” said Red Wing Public Schools Dakota language teacher Perry Fernands, who is coordinating “An Evening with Dakota Speakers” at 5 p.m. Dec. 18 at Twin Bluff Middle School.
The University of Minnesota estimates there are only 300 fluent Dakota speakers in the U.S. and Canada, but fewer than 25 are first-language speakers – people who grew up in a home where Dakota was the primary language. Only five known first-language elders live in Minnesota today, according to the U of M. This means Dakota is a critically endangered language with far more language learners than native speakers today.
The Dec. 18 event will feature Sandra McKay, Marilyn Hall, Clifford Canku and Joe Bunn, who will share teachings and stories from the Sioux Valley Dakota Nation, Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate and Birdtail Sioux First Nation. Made possible through a Native Language Revitalization Grant, the evening also will include a meal; people are asked to RSVP to help determine food quantities.
The loss of Dakota fluency came about due through federal policies of genocide and forced assimilation in the the 19th and early 20th centuries. This included boarding schools where children were taken from their families and prohibited from speaking their first language. Native Americans were forced into Euro-American ways of life in other ways, decimating tribal populations and tearing apart families.
First language is the primary language a person learns from birth or early childhood, shaping their initial identity and communication. It's the language acquired naturally and most comfortably, distinct from a second language learned later through formal study, Fernands explained.
Red Wing Public Schools in partnership with the Prairie Island Indian Community is among the leaders in Minnesota’s Dakota language revitalization efforts. This is the third academic year that Red Wing High School’s World Languages Department has offered Dakota along with Spanish and German. Next year the program will expand to include Dakota IV.
“Dak̇ota Oyate kiŋ ohiŋniyaŋ déd tipi kte. Dak̇odiapi kiŋ ataya onáḣ'uŋ waṡteṡte do. Aŋpétu iyóhi Dak̇ota ia wo! Hé uŋ etaŋhaŋ owaṡtektedo,” said Derek Walking Eagle, who is the District’s Dakota Language Instructor.
At the kindergarten-grade 7 level, Fernands offers immersion programming for Indigenous K-4 students in the morning. She periodically visits all K-7 classes during the year.
“Having four respected and fluent Dakota speakers come to Red Wing is an honor,” Fernands said. “I am humbled that they have agreed to share their wisdom.”

Colvill Family Center
Start 2026 with early childhood screening
Early childhood screening provides the best opportunity for any health or developmental concerns to be found early. The sooner a child gets screened, the quicker early intervention can occur to help the child get on track.
Screening is required for entrance in Minnesota’s public schools and must take place between age 3 and kindergarten. While you may think fall 2026 is far away, kindergarten registration starts in February.
Please call 651-385-8000 to sign up for a screening date/time for your child. Screening is offered monthly at Colvill Family Center throughout the school year. Dates are:
- Jan. 8 and 22
- Feb. 5 & 19
- March 12
- April 9 and 23
- May 14
Screening is a quick, no-cost check of a child's vision and hearing, height and weight, immunization record and a review of health care coverage. Screeners also look for risk factors that may impact learning, such as use of large and small muscles, thinking, language and speaking skills. The screening includes a parent/guardian report of social-emotional development and a summary meeting.

District News
Truth-in-Taxation hearing is Monday night
Red Wing School Board members will hold the annual Truth-in-Taxation hearing, set the 2026 levy and approve the 2024-2025 audit. The business meeting will start at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 15, in Red Wing High School room J110.
The Truth-in-Taxation hearing will take place at 6 p.m. Minnesota's local governments hold these hearing to provide a formal venue for taxpayers to ask questions, comment on proposed budget increases, and voice their opinions on how their tax dollars are being spent. The district's portion of the Goodhue County property tax levy has been dropping by approximately $200,000 a year as enrollment declines and therefore per-pupil, vote-approved tax revenues do, too.
The business meeting will be livestreamed. Find the agenda on the BoardBook.
Office hours reduced over winter break
Winter break officially runs Dec. 22-Jan. 2. All offices will be closed Dec. 24,-26 and Dec. 31, Jan. 1-2.
Students and teachers will be out, but the District Office and Community Education & Recreation will be open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 22-23 and 29-30. Hours for other sites may be reduced and offices closed additional days. If you plan to visit other buildings, please call ahead to ensure someone is there to meet with you.
We wish you a safe and happy break. Look for the next newsletter in the new year.
