5th GRADE CELEBRATION

Please limit the number of guests coming for each student. Teachers will have sign out sheets and students will have their belongings to leave from the PAC if you choose to celebrate the rest of the day with them. Students can dress up!
As we get closer, a link will be shared so you or family who can't attend will be able to watch a live stream of the event
M-STEP
Next week, students in grades 3-5 will begin taking the Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress (M-STEP), a 21st Century computer-based assessment designed to gauge how well students are mastering state standards. These standards, developed for educators by educators, broadly outline what students should know and be able to do in order to be prepared to enter the workplace, career education training, and college. When combined with classroom work, report cards, local district assessments and other tools, M-STEP results offer a comprehensive view of student progress and achievement.
We encourage you to support your child in giving their best effort. We use this data to drive curriculum and instruction planning. We want a true understanding of the standards your child has mastered so we can better serve them. The schedule is as follows:
TUE APR 14 - ELA (3-5)
THU APR 16 - SCIENCE (5)
TUE APR 21 - MATH (3-5)
THU APR 23 - SS (5)
PBIS Update
Recent Behavior Data Analysis
In alignment with our academic standards, we also analyze behavioral data to ensure our school environment remains safe, respectful, and conducive to learning. When patterns of disruption are identified, we implement targeted action plans to restore a positive atmosphere.
The PBIS Framework: LEAD the Madison Way
Our Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) system is centered on explicitly teaching and reinforcing positive conduct. Throughout the year, we acknowledge students who embody our core expectations:
L ive Respectfully
E mbrace Responsibility
A ct Safely
D evelop Healthy Choices
Current Trends and Progress
Our behavior data continues to show consistent improvement this year. Furthermore, recent climate surveys indicate that both students and staff feel increasingly safe and supported, with measurable growth across every surveyed category.
Targeted Areas for Growth
While overall behavior is strong, our data-driven approach allows us to identify and address specific challenges. Currently, we have noted a trend among upper elementary boys involving defiant behavior during the mornings in classrooms. These instances are often linked to task-avoidance, resulting in disciplinary actions such as time-outs or detentions.
Our Proactive Response
To address this, we are implementing the following interventions:
1. Reteaching and Practice: Each morning, Mr. Frederick announces a specific "Expectation Location of the Day" (e.g., the hallway, bus, classroom, playground, or cafeteria). Teachers then lead dedicated lessons and practice sessions for that area. If standards are not met, students "Stop, Reteach, and Practice" until the behavior is mastered.
2. The "Magic Button" Initiative: Mr. Frederick is currently visiting all upper elementary classrooms to teach a specialized lesson on self-regulation and decision-making. This "Magic Button" concept encourages students to pause and reflect before reacting.
A visual representation of the "Magic Button" lesson is provided below to help you reinforce these concepts at home.
Artsonia
Artsonia - Purchase your child's art work!
Artsonia is an online platform that showcases student artwork in a digital portfolio. By scanning the QR code and setting up a parent account, you can view your child’s artwork, celebrate their creativity, and watch their artistic growth year after year. Students will still bring home original pieces, but Artsonia allows us to preserve and share their art with loved ones near and far.
Once your parent account is set up, you can also invite family members and friends to connect so they can view and celebrate your student's artwork too.
Families also have the option to order keepsakes featuring their child’s artwork, with a portion of proceeds supporting our school’s art program.
