Scoliosis Screening

2/12/25

ScoliosisScreening2/12/25

CMS Families,

In accordance with the Alabama State Department of Education and the Alabama Department of Public Health’s scoliosis guidelines, Huntsville City Schools will be offering scoliosis screening for all 5th-9th grade students whose parents' opt-in for screening. Only students who return permission slips will be screened.

Screening is performed by observing the uncovered spine, viewing the student from the back, side, and front and from all sides with the student bending forward. If a spinal problem is suspected, the child will be rechecked at a second screening. Parents of students found to have signs of a possible spinal abnormality will be asked to see their own healthcare provider for further evaluation.

Girls and boys will be screened separately to ensure privacy. They can wear gym clothes, bathing suits, or other clothing that may be removed easily. Screening for your child will take place on Tuesday, February 25th during their PE class. If your child is currently under treatment for a spinal deformity, please let us know and your child will be exempt from the screening process.

If you would like your child to be screened for scoliosis, please complete the attached consent form below and return to the school nurse by: Wednesday, February 19th, 2025.

Please note: Forms not returned will result in student not being screened. Only return this form if you want your child screened.
