Literacy Literacy

We kicked off Unit 2: Characters Facing Challenges this week! We read two stories this week, called The Foolish Milkmaid and The Daydreaming Sprinter. We practiced retelling the story in sequence by identifying the important events and putting them in the correct order. We also began learning about making inferences, or using clues from the text along with what we already know to figure out things the author doesn’t tell us directly. As we continue through this unit, students will be exploring how characters respond to challenges and how their actions, thoughts, and choices help us better understand them.

Writing Writing

In writing, students will be working on an opinion piece connected to the characters and stories we are reading. Students will form an opinion about a character and support their thinking with specific details and evidence from the story. We will practice stating a clear opinion statement, choosing strong details to support our thinking, and explaining how those details connect to our opinion.

Math Math

In math this week, we took our Unit 1 Post-Assessment, which gave students an opportunity to show how much they have learned and how their math skills have grown so far this year!

We also introduced money this week. Students began reviewing the values of coins and practicing how to identify and count different combinations of coins. We will continue building on these skills as we work with money in different situations.

Today during our PLC time, we analyzed students’ Unit 2 Pre-Assessment data and used the results to create new math groups for the upcoming unit. Since these groups are based on students’ current needs and areas for growth, it is possible that your student may be in a different math class for the next unit. We will share any class changes with students as we begin Unit 2.

Next week, we will begin Lesson 6, which focuses on adding two-digit numbers. Students will explore different strategies for adding, including using place value and models, while continuing to explain their mathematical thinking.
