HDMS Newsletter
November 2022
Greetings from HDMS!
The past month was busy with so many activities taking place at HDMS! The 6th grade’s passion projects along with the Junk to Funk were a great way to end the month of October. The students did a great job for their Junk to Funk concert Friday night with close to 200 people in attendance. The 6th grade also hosted Animal Adventures, which is always a big hit with the students! We were fortunate to have John Halligan present Ryan’s Story to parents on November 3 and to an all school assembly November 4. Mr. Halligan praised the students on how respectful they were as an audience. This is high praise considering Mr. Halligan has presented to over 2000 schools. We are so fortunate to have the Duncan-Jenkins Trust in our community. All of these activities were funded through the trust!
November 4 was the last day of the first quarter. The second quarter starts on November 7. The girls’ and boys’ basketball seasons get underway this month along with after school clubs. After school clubs meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm. Registration forms are in the main office. We are all looking forward to the annual Turkey Trot race on November 22. It’s great to be able to host the Veteran’s Day breakfast on November 10 again after a three year absence.
We hope you are able to enjoy time with family and friends during the Thanksgiving break!

What's Happening
- HDMS Yearbook: Yearbooks are on sale for $20. Check out yearbookforever.com or pick up an order form in the main office. Price increases in December. Parents should have received an email from Walsworth that has other ordering details.
- 6th grade Computer Science students are finishing up a cyberbullying unit and are starting a unit about digital footprints. In November we will wrap up topics on Digital Citizenship with informational posters to hang in the hallways at HDMS.
- 8th grade students and parents: The yearbook committee is collecting 8th grade info on the new Yearbook Google Classroom. We are looking for last words, hobbies and nicknames, and photos. We want a baby photo from every 8th grader and candid shots. If you have photos to send in, you can use the Google Form, or email them to jdrew@hdsd.org. Thanks!
- There will be a Veterans Day Breakfast on November 10, at the Middle School. Information to sign up will be going out to the community the first week of November.
- 8th graders finished the quarter strong! Students practiced analyzing non-fiction texts in ELA and Social Studies. In Science and Math they worked with scientific notation, exponents, metric conversions, and dimensional analysis. We have entered WWI in Social Studies and learned about the horrors of the trenches. Students will begin writing a letter from the trenches incorporating writing and primary source synthesis.
- 8th grade Makerspace students are preparing for an egg drop activity. They are limited in the amount of materials they can use and we will be measuring the weight, velocity and distance of the drop. They have decorated and named their vehicles to get ready for the big drop!
- 7th grade Computer Science students are exploring Green Screen Techniques and video editing. Some students are doing informational videos about animals, sports teams and video games.
- This year, the 8th grade team will be hosting a Market Day (formally known as the commerce fair) in mid-December. Market Day is an opportunity for students to create a business plan, create a marketing strategy, and sell an actual product! Look out for more information after the Thanksgiving break.

Cold and Flu season in on us. Please help keep our schools healthy. If your student has a fever over 100 please keep them home. If you suspect COVID and would like a COVID home test please contact the health office 603 464 1275.
The health office has oral health tool kits available for all the post Halloween candy. If your student needs a toothbrush or any oral care products tell them to visit the nurse.
The best way to prevent the spread of viruses is good handwashing. Encourage your students to wash their hand before and after eating, when using the bathroom, or anytime they look dirty.
Thank you and stay healthy,

MTSS-B at HDMS
In the HDMS multi-tiered system of support for behavior (MTSS-B), Tier 1 is the most important. Why? Research has shown that Tier 1 supports and services have the most impact on growth and wellness, because they are available to all students, families and teachers. At HDMS, we have many exciting Tier 1 activities. In addition to academic and unified arts classes, we offer after-school clubs, music programs, athletic opportunities, and special events such as school dances, performances and guest speakers.
Our advisory program is one foundation of HDMS Tier 1 supports and services. Advisory occurs every day, allowing students to form a strong, guiding connection with their advisory teachers throughout the entire school year. Advisory activities help students to build study skills and social connections, and regular team-building activities and fun competitive events allow students to become a part of a small school family. Advisory teachers also work hard to build connections with parents/guardians, and are the main contact when families have questions or concerns. Please reach out to your child’s advisory teacher to learn more!
