Special event at JGMS!
May 29th, 2024
Author, Mitali Perkins, will be visiting the JGMS library
Enrichment Activity - May 29, 2024
The JGMS library and the Parents' Diversity Council are hosting an enrichment activity after school on Wednesday, May 29, 2024.
Mitali Perkins has written many books for young readers, including You Bring the Distant Near (nominated for a National Book Award) and Rickshaw Girl (adapted into a film by Sleeperwave Productions), all of which explore crossing different kinds of borders. Her goal is to make readers laugh or cry, preferably both, as long as their hearts are widening. She lives and writes in the San Francisco Bay Area.
What to expect during the author visit
Using a personal, humorous slide show, Mitali shares candidly about her experience of growing up and writing "between cultures," and the power of stories to keep us balanced. Students are encouraged to participate and the author's conversational style sparks lively responses. Read some wonderful letters from kids responding to "Stories on the Fire Escape."

About Hope in the Valley

7th grade students are all reading an excerpt from Bamboo People
Chiko isn’t a fighter by nature. He’s a book-loving Burmese boy whose father, a doctor, is in prison for resisting the government. Tu Reh, on the other hand, wants to fight for freedom after watching Burmese soldiers destroy his Karenni family's home and bamboo fields.
Timidity becomes courage and anger becomes compassion as each boy is changed by unlikely friendships formed under extreme circumstances.
This coming-of-age novel takes place against the political and military backdrop of modern-day Burma. Narrated by two fifteen-year-old boys on opposing sides of the conflict between the Burmese government and the Karenni, one of the many ethnic minorities in Burma, Bamboo People explores the nature of violence, power, and prejudice.
