At the April 2 School Board Work Session, the Cell Phone Committee shared updated recommendations for student cell phone use. One change was made for high school students:

  • Elementary: No change. Students may not use cell phones during the school day. Use on the bus is discouraged but not disciplined unless inappropriate.
  • Middle School: No change. Students may not use cell phones during the school day.

  • High School: Phones remain off during class. New for 2025–2026: phones will not be allowed in the hallways during the school day. Use is still allowed in the lunchroom during a student’s lunch period.

These updates support a more focused learning environment for all students.

❗Starting July 1, SFSD will no longer use the paid version of Remind❗ ❗Starting July 1, SFSD will no longer use the paid version of Remind❗

zoom_out_map

Important Update:

Starting July 1, 2025, SFSD will no longer be using the paid version of the two-way communication tool known as Remind. The cost for this service had been paid for through pandemic funding, which no longer exists. Further, the cost is increasing from $60,000 to well over $100,000 and is not in line with current budget realities.

What you need to know:

Many similar two-way communication products exist, including a FREE version of Remind. The SFSD Technology Department must review any services teachers, coaches, etc. use to ensure compliance with school board policies and state and federal laws (COOPA).

Expected Practices:

When using a Two Communication tool, a coach/director must include at least one additional adult on the communication with students. This can be a parent, volunteer coach/director, asst coach/director, head coach/director, school administrator, another teacher, department or team chair or similar adult. Communication shall never be 1:1 staff member to student or small group of students.

The following free services have been vetted and approved for use. ALL others require submission of an Apps, Websites and Extensions (AWE) Request Form.

  • Remind
  • Whatsapp Business
  • Class DoJo
  • Talking Points
  • Google Voice
  • SeeSaw

Other District communication tools supported and approved:

  • State K12 Email
  • Canvas
  • Infinite Campus
  • Thrillshare

May 7th was National Interpreter Appreciation Day! May 7th was National Interpreter Appreciation Day!

zoom_out_map

National Interpreter Appreciation Day was May 7th, and while we missed the date in last week’s District Dialogue, we didn’t want to miss the chance to recognize the vital role our interpreters play in the Sioux Falls School District!

Interpreters are the voice between worlds, bridging languages and cultures with care and compassion. They are essential, not just to our work, but to the lives, stories, and communities they touch.

THANK YOU to all interpreters for powering connection and building understanding. We appreciate you!

May 12th-16th is National Food Allergy Awareness Week! May 12th-16th is National Food Allergy Awareness Week!

zoom_out_map
In the Sioux Falls School District, over 900 students have a special diet, most due to peanut and tree nut allergies. Food allergies are a growing concern nationwide, impacting school safety and student health. Here's what you should know:

  • 32 million Americans have food allergies, including 1 in 13 children, about two per classroom.

  • Food allergies happen when the immune system reacts to something it wrongly sees as harmful.

  • 9 top allergens cause most reactions: peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, wheat, soy, fish, shellfish, and sesame.

  • There’s no cure, strict avoidance is the only prevention.

  • Even tiny traces of an allergen can cause a serious reaction.

  • Reactions can happen within minutes or up to 2 hours after exposure.

  • Anaphylaxis is a severe, life-threatening reaction that needs immediate epinephrine and a 911 call.

  • People at risk should carry two epinephrine devices and an emergency action plan.

  • Food allergies are rising and are a growing public health issue.

By staying informed and taking simple precautions, we can help protect students with food allergies every day! Learn more and find free safety resources at: www.foodallergyawareness.org

Students Who SHINE: Rylie Rothenberger

Rylie Rothenberger isn’t one to let her situation get in the way of her dreams. You wouldn’t know it watching her on the track, but she was born with cystic fibrosis. With treatment and support from her friends and family, she has been able to not only participate in, but become a leader on, the Ben Reifel track team. Like all great student athletes, her passion follows her off the track and into the classroom. She is taking multiple accelerated courses and earning high school credit in 8th grade, while also participating in sports and activities throughout the school year and into the summer. Rylie teaches us that our circumstances do not define us, and with some determination and grit, we can accomplish whatever we strive for. Meet this amazing young woman.
