Our Assistant Principal

Happy New Year Bussey Bears! It has been awesome to see all of our students' smiling faces even if behind our masks. We are also very grateful to see our returning staff and we are welcoming new staff members to our team. I want to take this time to thank you for all of your cooperation in ensuring that your students continue to wear their masks while at school so that we can continue to keep everyone healthy. Our number one priority is to keep everyone safe and we know that we can’t do it without your help. We are excited for our second semester of school. During this semester we want to encourage you more than ever to ensure that your students are attending school, doing their homework and focusing in class as we start to approach our testing season. Our students will very soon be taking their TELPAS assessments as well as STAAR assessments and we want to see success for all our Bussey Bears. We are excited for 2022 and all of the rewards that are to come with it.

Ms. Acosta

our Principal

Happy New Year everyone!! I can not believe that we are already starting our 2nd semester of the 2021-2022 school year. Bussey has had some improvements happening around the building this year. We have had our Library updated with new flooring which makes it look bright and beautiful. We also have gotten a new marquee outside the front of the school. Right now it is just on one side however the other side is coming soon. And lastly the most exciting addition to Bussey is our new extended playground for all of our Bussey Bears which has been a huge hit for all of the students!! Pictures of the playground are below.

During the first semester we were able to get back to hosting for Parents Fall Open House, Math Monster Math, 1st & 2nd Grade Program and our Family literacy Night. It was exciting to finally start to get back to a normal school year. So far for the Spring Semester we have offered a HAC (Home Access Center) Parent Workshop which was a huge success with 78 parents attending! Planned upcoming events for the Spring Semester are 3rd & 4th Grade Program, GT Expo, Science Family Night, 5th Grade Graduation and additional Parent Workshops.

Please continue doing all you can do to keep everyone safe and healthy so your children can be in school everyday. Looking forward to seeing everyone and having a wonderful Spring Semester!

Campus Highlights

Bussey's Teacher of the Year

Here is a little introduction of Ms. Nieto in her own words.

“My name is Mariel Nieto, and I am incredibly honored to be voted as Bussey’s Teacher of the Year. I am in second year of my teaching career, and I am thankful to all of my family here at Bussey who has helped me to grow professionally. They are always willing to share their knowledge and skills with me. I earned my bachelor’s degree in accounting in May 2018 from the University of Houston- Clear Lake and was in the business world for two years after. Though I did enjoy my career at the time, I felt like my calling was elsewhere. So I followed my heart and applied for a teaching ACP program. Since then, I feel like my life has changed and I found what I was meant to be doing. Teaching is so rewarding and gives me a sense that I am making the world a better place; one student at a time.

When I am not teaching, I can be found at the dog park hanging out with my furbabies, Lilah and Kiko. I also like to visit my family in my hometown Freeport, Texas where I was born and raised. My favorite hobby is baking cakes for my friends and family and learning the newest cake decorating trends.”

Bussey’s Nominee for the HAABSE Outstanding Teacher Award

The Houston Area Alliance of Black School Educators (HAABSE), an affiliate of both the Texas Alliance of Black School Educators (TABSE) and the National Alliance of Black School Educators (NABSE), was organized in May of 1986. HAABSE’s primary goal is to enhance the education of all students. HAABSE is particularly sensitive to the needs and interests of the Black community. Using the HAABSE network, members can share and provide many valuable professional services and intervention strategies focused on improving the educational environment of Black youth and educators in our community.

Ms. Shawntel Davis is Bussey’s nominee for the HAABSE award. Here is her introduction in her own words.

“My name is Shawntel Davis. I was born and raised in southeast Houston. I graduated from Hastings High school in 2000. I went to East Texas Baptist University where I obtained my bachelors in Education. After teaching for several years and seeing first hand the struggles of students with disabilities, I earned a Masters in Special Education from Ashford University. I decided to transition into special education and I have been a SPED teacher in Aldine since then. I am a mother of a fun loving toddler, Cason. My all time favorite quote to live by is written by Maya Angelou,

If you are always trying to be normal, you will never know how amazing you can be.

Everyday I look forward to a new exciting day of teaching. I believe I was made to do exactly what I have been doing for the last 13 years! I hope to impact many lives and pass on my cheerful and loving spirit to each student, teacher and parent. I am honored to be considered for such a great award.”
