From the Desk of Mrs. Stariha
Cooper Families,
Our 4th graders are starting the Forward State Testing this week and are off to a great start! Please remember to reference the schedule that teachers provided and try to ensure your child is getting enough sleep at night so they are ready to do their best for the exam.
Also, the weather is still ever changing and we will start to see quite a bit of water and/or mud around our playground. Please send an extra pair of clothes with your child in case they get wet or muddy at recess.

Perspective
Perspective is a key component of empathy. Taking time to try to look at a situation from another's point of view or truly listening to someone else's way of thinking is hard for both children and adults. When we understand what someone else was thinking, feeling, and seeing, that can help us respond in a more understanding and kind way. Understanding someone's perspective doesn't mean agreeing with them. But it does mean that you take the time to see them as a human also worthy of respect and kindness. Here are a few practical ways to help children develop this skill:
1. Use the "Step into Their Shoes" Visual
The classic metaphor works because it's literal. Ask your child:
"If you were wearing your friend's shoes today and fell down, what would you be thinking?"
"How do you think they felt when everyone else started laughing?"
2. The "Number 6 vs. Number 9" Lesson
Draw a large 6 on a piece of paper and place it on the floor between you and the child.
From where you are sitting, it’s a 6.
From where they are sitting, it’s a 9.
The Lesson: Both people are right, even though they see something completely different. This is a great way to explain that two people can have different "truths" based on where they are standing.

NEW Youth Volleyball Opportunity Coming This Fall!
We are exploring the launch of Superior Volleyball Teams for 4th–6th graders (as of the 2026-2027 school year)! This would be the first year of the program, and we’re looking to see how many athletes might be interested.
We would be starting with three teams:
- 4th Grade Team
- 5th Grade Team
- 6th Grade Team
The program will run between September and October:
- Up to 4 practices
- 3–5 play dates with other teams on Saturdays, playdates will require travel
- 10 players max per team
If there is enough interest, we may consider forming additional teams, provided we are able to secure coaches and there are available spots at play dates.
To make this possible, we will also need parent/guardian volunteer coaches.
If your athlete might be interested, please complete our quick interest survey below. It only takes a minute and helps us plan for the fall!
Please share this information with other families who may be interested in youth volleyball!
Thank you,
Kristin Riesgraf - Coach

Cartwheel is Here to Support Students and Families
As a reminder, Cartwheel is a proactive resource for students struggling with anxiety, focus challenges, school avoidance, or any mental health concerns that need extra support — a chance to connect students with care before challenges escalate.
Cartwheel also provides parent guidance, giving families the opportunity to speak with a clinician about what they're observing and get support as they figure out how to best help their child.
Families can reach out directly via our interest form — every submission is reviewed and approved by our team before anyone is connected to care. You can make a referral directly here.
Elementary Transfer Requests
Elementary transfer requests for the 2026-27 school year are currently being accepted. Elementary transfer requests are for students residing in Superior who request an elementary school that is not in the boundary area. Forms are due via email to enrollment@superior.k12.wi.us by March 6, 2026. The form can be found on our website under Parents or by clicking this link to access the form.
