Antrim Elementary School - December 8, 2023
Principal Corner
Hello AES families,
This being my first year at Antrim Elementary has allowed me to experience traditions for the first time. Some of the traditions have lasted decades, some have started more recently and we are going to be putting some in place for the first time this year.
Community meetings are a very special tradition at AES. They are a time for the school community to come together to recognize achievements and celebrate one another. I learned recently that there had been a talent portion of the community meeting. We welcome any student or staff member to sign up to share a talent they might have with the school. We ask anyone interested in sharing their talent, meet with me before being up on the agenda. Thank you to so many families for joining us at the community meetings and we welcome more families to join throughout the year.
For the first time this year, we will be having a winter feast at AES for the staff and students. The winter feast will take place on Thursday, December 21st at 12:00. I will be cooking a majority of the food and serving. We need some woodland gnome volunteers to make this event successful. If you would like to volunteer in any way, please use the link to the sign up genius. Please reach out with any questions.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Beth

Update: Universal Rollout for Respect
The students and staff continue to focus on respect at AES. Students are getting closer to earning a school wide celebration, including a school wide pajama day, craft and a movie at the end of the three weeks! The celebration, when earned, will be Friday - December 22nd.
Universal Focus - RESPECT
Week 1- respect to adults (following directions)
Week 2- respect to peers (kind words and actions)
Week 3- respect to materials
Students who demonstrate the school wide expectation of respect throughout the month will earn a "snowball" to add t the snow people. When the wall is filled with snow, all students will earn a special celebration.
Please continue to talk with your child about what it means to be respectful and reinforce when you see them being respectful at home.
Preschool
Preschool is beginning our holiday fun through music, books, activities, crafts, and lots of glitter.
Kindergarten
Last week in Ms. Lawler’s class, we read three books with the theme of animals in winter, and leaving food for forest critters. After reading the books, each student made a bird feeder out of a pinecone, peanut butter and bird seed. We hung our pinecone bird feeders in our play space in the forest. We’re excited to go back today to see if any animals enjoyed the treats we lef
Ms. Dibble’s class has been working hard in all subjects while having fun. In math, we have been working on measuring length. Wednesday we measured the materials in our classroom with a string and found if they were “longer than” or “shorter than” the string. Friday we had the opportunity to go into the forest for math. We found three sticks that were the “same length” and brought them in for a winter project.
Grade 1
Mrs. Sullivan’s class has been learning about different holidays celebrated with lights! This week we have learned about Hanukkah, created our own menorahs and played the dreidel game. We ended our week with a trip to the town library to see the “Festival of Trees” display.
First graders in Mrs. DiFolco’s class are practicing their reading skills by sharing their weekly phonics stories with a partner. They are also learning about story elements such as characters, setting and events!

Note from Ms. Gregg, School Counselor– The holiday season is a time of many emotions. In addition to feelings of anticipation, excitement, and happiness, many children also feel stress, anxiety, and disappointment at this time of year. At AES we try to anticipate the full array of feelings our students may experience. We work to keep things calm and low-key and we use the same routines and support we provide to the children throughout the school year. As always, I welcome communication from you, our students’ families. Please reach out to me and/or your child(ren)’s teacher if you wish to share any concerns. I hope that the coming weeks bring all of you some quiet moments and a chance to experience feelings of wonder and joy.
